Where is Estonia located?

Estonia sits in the Baltic states, bordering Latvia to the south, Russia to the east, and the Baltic Sea to the north and west — making it the northernmost of the three Baltic countries. It’s also been an EU member since 2004.

Finland is surprisingly close too, even though the two countries are separated by the Baltic Sea.

At 45,339 km², Estonia is a relatively compact country — roughly the size of Denmark. With a population of around 1.3 million and just 29 people per km², it’s genuinely one of Europe’s least crowded destinations.

FAQ

When is the best time to travel to Estonia?

Estonia is pretty far north, so winters are cold, long, and dark. Temperatures regularly drop below freezing — not exactly ideal for sightseeing.

Summer is hands-down the best time to visit Estonia, even if it’s short. From June through August, you can expect pleasant temperatures around 19–20°C (66–68°F). Our personal favorite is Estonia as a travel destination in July.

One thing to know: even in summer, nights can get quite cool, so pack a jacket and a few layers.

What language do they speak in Estonia?

The official language is Estonian, spoken by the majority of the population.

English is also widely spoken — Estonians actually rank among the best non-native English speakers in Europe, so you’ll have no trouble getting around.

You’ll also hear Russian, Finnish, and German fairly regularly.

How much time should I plan for a trip to Estonia?

Estonia is a small country, so you can cover the highlights and still squeeze in some time by the sea in one week.

For the capital Tallinn, two days is plenty.
