Wilderness is a small town in South Africa, sitting right on the Garden Route with around 6,000 residents.
The town is beautifully positioned along a long sandy beach with a backdrop of rolling green hills. The nearest larger towns are George (15 km away) and Knysna (47 km).
Wilderness has a small but lively town center with good restaurants, art galleries, and shops.
It’s also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding highlights along the Garden Route.
Attractions Around Wilderness
Map of Africa: The Best Viewpoint in Wilderness
What do you need to know? The Map of Africa is a viewpoint above Wilderness where you get a stunning vista of the Kaaimans River winding through the valley — its shape traces the outline of the African continent.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. The view is seriously beautiful, and for us it’s one of the must-sees when you’re doing things to do in Wilderness South Africa.
Our tip: The viewpoint is well signposted and easy to find on Google Maps. The last stretch of road is unpaved but totally manageable in a regular car. About a kilometer before the viewpoint, you’ll pass a small food truck on the left called Hallo Coffee — really great coffee and delicious cake with a fantastic view. Definitely worth building into your plans!
Wilderness Beach: A True Dream Beach
What do you need to know? Wilderness Beach stretches right in front of the town center and is one of the most beautiful beaches along the entire Garden Route.
Is it worth it? 100%! White sand, great waves, and hardly any crowds — a stroll along the beach is simply not to be missed when you visit Wilderness South Africa.
Timberlake Village: A Charming Artists' Village
What do you need to know? Timberlake Village is a small artists’ village about 10 km outside of Wilderness, right on the N2 heading toward Knysna.
Is it worth it? There are a few cafés, restaurants, cute shops, and art galleries here, plus a large playground for kids. We had a great time there with our kids — but honestly, even without children it’s worth a stop.
Wild Oats Market in Sedgefield
What do you need to know? The Wild Oats Community Farmers Market is a large weekly market in Sedgefield, about 15 minutes from Wilderness. It runs every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Is it worth it? It’s widely called the best market on the Garden Route, and we’d agree. Tons of food stalls, loads of vendors selling fresh local produce — if you’re there on a Saturday, don’t skip it.
Our tip: Get there as early as possible and come hungry. The food stalls are a wonderful spot for breakfast, with plenty of coffee and plenty of seating too.
Victoria Bay Beach: Great Beach for Swimming
What do you need to know? Victoria Bay is a small cove with a sandy beach, about 10 minutes from Wilderness.
Is it worth it? Definitely worth it if you want to swim — it’s great for that. There’s also a restaurant on site, so you can easily spend a longer stretch of time here.
Woodville Big Tree
What do you need to know? The Woodville Big Tree is an ancient Outeniqua Yellowwood tree believed to be over 800 years old. It stands an impressive 31 meters tall with a diameter of over 9 meters.
Is it worth it? It makes for a lovely outing, though it’s not an absolute must-see. A pretty trail winds around the tree — about 2 km long and easy to walk.
Kingfisher Trails: Hiking in Wilderness National Park
What do you need to know? In Wilderness National Park you can hike, discover several waterfalls, and paddle a canoe along the river.
Is it worth it? The national park is one of the standout highlights in the area. We’d really recommend spending a full day here.
Our tip: There are various hiking trails in the park — you can find an overview on the SANParks website. The most popular routes are the Half Collard Kingfisher Trail and the Giant Kingfisher Trail. All the hikes are relatively easy.
Dolphin Point: Great Views with Dolphins
What do you need to know? Dolphin Point is a small overlook right along the main N2 highway. With a bit of luck you can spot dolphins — and sometimes even whales.
Is it worth it? Since you’ll likely be driving past anyway, just pull over for a moment, enjoy the panorama, and snap a few photos. There isn’t much more to do there, but it’s a nice quick stop.
Paragliding over Wilderness
What do you need to know? Right next to the Map of Africa viewpoint, paragliders take off and soar down toward the valley.
Is it worth it? The scenery is seriously breathtaking — you take off and glide toward the ocean. It doesn’t get much better than that. You can book a tandem flight and go up with an experienced pilot. It’s genuinely a one-of-a-kind experience.

Where to Stay In and Around Wilderness
Wilderness is a fantastic place to base yourself overnight on the Garden Route. There’s a great range of accommodation in and around town, and many places have ocean views.
Our Top 5 Hotel Picks for Wilderness
Mes Amis Beach Guesthouse: lovingly run guesthouse. Super modern, all rooms have ocean views, and the breakfast is outstanding. Excellent value for money.
Pearl Moon Boutique Suites: Beautiful self-catering apartments with ocean views and a balcony. All rooms have a kitchenette — perfect if you prefer to cook for yourself.
Moontide Riverside Lodge: A charming little lodge right on the Touw River. Tastefully decorated bungalows and free canoe rental!
Beach Villa Wilderness: A great, modern property right by the ocean. Excellent breakfast, a small pool, and an honor bar. There’s also a large family room!
Oakhurst Farm Cottages: A sprawling farm about 10 minutes outside of Wilderness. Perfect for families — two playgrounds, a pool, horses to ride, and a lake with canoes. We stayed here and our kids absolutely loved it. That said, if you’re traveling without kids, one of the places in town would probably suit you better.
Is It Worth Spending the Night in Wilderness?
If you’re driving the full Garden Route, we’d strongly recommend staying at least one night in Wilderness. There’s so much to see and do in the area that you could easily fill several days here.
On our Garden Route road trip, we split our overnight stays between Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay — it was a perfect combination that we’d happily repeat.
Cafés and Restaurants in Wilderness
Wilderness has a solid selection of restaurants and cafés. Two stand out above the rest:
The Girls
The Girls is no secret — it’s probably the most popular restaurant in Wilderness, and honestly, it deserves every bit of that reputation.
Expect excellent South African cuisine with international influences and outstanding sushi. Breakfast is really good here too. Prices are moderate and the atmosphere is lovely.
Our personal favorite was the Cape Malay curry with shrimp!
Heritage Bakery
You’ll find Heritage Bakery not far from Timberlake Village.
When we visited, it felt like we’d stepped back 100 years in time. Chickens roam freely, someone’s weaving on a loom inside, and on Sundays it’s closed because everyone’s at church.
It’s all a little quirky — but the cakes and sandwiches are really good and it’s a lovely place to sit. If you’re traveling with kids, the two alpacas you’re allowed to feed are a real highlight.
Our Verdict on Wilderness
Alongside Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness was our favorite spot on the entire Garden Route. The town is incredibly laid-back and the surrounding landscape is truly stunning.
When you’re planning what to do in Wilderness, South Africa, our honest advice is simple: don’t skip it. It’s worth every bit of time you give it.
