There are 4 towns we especially recommend for your stay on the popular North Sea island of Sylt:

Where to Stay in Westerland
Westerland is ideal if you want to stay centrally and have plenty of restaurants and shopping options within walking distance. It’s also the best base if you’re visiting Sylt without a car.
Westerland is the tourist hub of the island. Here you’ll find the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, and everyday supermarkets like Aldi.
So if you’re after some buzz and activity during your Sylt vacation, book a hotel in Westerland.
The town sits centrally on the island and right on the water. For first-time visitors, it’s the perfect base if you want to do a lot of sightseeing on Sylt.
Westerland is also home to the train station, which makes it a great choice if you’re arriving without a car. The one downside: Westerland isn’t particularly pretty. Many of the buildings have a dated 1970s feel.

Where to Stay in Wenningstedt-Braderup
Wenningstedt is perfect if you want a central location but a quieter vibe than Westerland. It works especially well if you rent a vacation apartment and take care of your own meals.
Wenningstedt-Braderup is our personal favorite for accommodation on Sylt. The town sits about 3.5 kilometers north of Westerland, so it’s still a solid base for sightseeing.
There’s also a good bus connection between the two towns, which means Wenningstedt-Braderup works fine even if you don’t have a car.
The restaurant scene is, however, quite limited. There are only two small, slightly pricier supermarkets and hardly any shopping options.
On the flip side, Wenningstedt is noticeably quieter than Westerland, and we find the beach a bit nicer and more laid-back. For us, it’s also the top pick if you’re visiting Sylt with kids.

- Good base for sightseeing

Where to Stay in List
List is the best place to stay on Sylt if your priority is rest and relaxation in nature — and you want to be close to the island’s most beautiful beaches.
Want a spot on Sylt with real island charm and none of the hustle? Then we’d suggest booking a hotel in List.
List sits at the very northern tip of Sylt and is our favorite town on the island. You’re right near the famous Sylt Ellenbogen (the northern spit), the dunes, and the wild west beach — one of the most stunning natural areas on Sylt.
The selection of restaurants, cafés, and shops is relatively small, and there are only a few places to stay. Ideally, you’d choose one of the lovely spa hotels on Sylt in this area.
If you want to explore more of the island beyond the Ellenbogen, you’ll need a car — or seriously strong legs on a bike. Westerland is almost 16 kilometers away.

Where to Stay in Keitum
Keitum is perfect if you’re after exclusivity and a luxurious hotel on Sylt. The town is very quiet and ideal for couples and true connoisseurs.
Want to experience the exclusive side of Sylt? Then we’d recommend booking a hotel in Keitum. This is where you’ll find the beautiful thatched-roof houses the island is famous for.
The small town sits about 5 kilometers east of Westerland, so it’s still relatively central — handy if you want to visit a few more sights on Sylt.
The restaurant and café scene is also on the smaller side, but there’s a lovely — if equally compact — selection of charming, upscale boutiques.
Keitum sits on the Wadden Sea, which means there’s no classic sandy beach right on your doorstep. You can, however, enjoy wonderful walks along the water.

Instead of a hotel, you can also book a vacation rental on Sylt. There are truly a huge number of them on the island.
A vacation rental is often a bit more affordable than a hotel, and you have the advantage of being able to cook your own meals.
We especially love vacation rentals if you’re traveling on a tighter budget or taking a vacation with kids. With a bit of luck, it’s one of the best ways to stay on Sylt without breaking the bank.

Looking for affordable accommodation on Sylt, or want to camp with your own RV or tent? Then we have one more bonus tip for you: the Mühlenhof campsite.
This is a really great campsite on Sylt. You can either stay in your own RV or in seriously cool glamping tents from Domo Camp Sylt.
We booked the glamping tents on our second trip to Sylt to keep costs down — and it was a really cool experience!
The Mühlenhof campsite itself is great too. Even in the glamping tents, you use the shared restroom facilities and communal kitchens, which are spotlessly clean.
Our highlight at the campsite, though, is the little snack bar Haihappen, run by a group of Sylt surfers. The fries here are absolutely delicious — highly recommended!

Where is the Mühlenhof Campsite Located?
The campsite is on the far eastern side of Sylt, near Morsum. There isn’t much around it, so you’ll need to cook for yourself or eat at Haihappen.
You’ll also need a car if you don’t want to (like us) bike many kilometers to reach the sights — because then you’re very much at the mercy of the weather.

Our tip: We rented our e-bikes from Christel’s Fahrradverleih (visit website). They delivered the bikes directly to us and picked them up again afterward. The bikes were in great shape — just call ahead to reserve.
Frequently Asked Questions About Staying on Sylt
How expensive are hotels on Sylt?
Sylt hotels are on average significantly more expensive than in many other German vacation regions — and prices really climb during peak season.
In summer (especially July and August), rates rise sharply and can, depending on the type of accommodation, go above €350 per night.
That said, we managed to keep costs down in July by staying in the glamping tents at Domo Camp Sylt — a great budget-friendly alternative.
When is the cheapest time to visit Sylt?
Sylt is cheapest during the off-season.
- January through March: the cheapest time, often with few tourists and plenty of deals
- November through early December: also very low prices
- Spring & fall (except holidays): mid-range prices
Prices are highest in summer (July/August) and around public holidays.
Is a hotel in Hörnum worth it?
Honestly, a hotel in Hörnum is usually not worth it.
Hörnum has plenty of nature, beautiful beaches, and peace and quiet — but that’s also its downside. It’s noticeably isolated, with very few restaurants and little going on in the evenings.
List is a much better alternative if you want that same quiet, natural feel — it has more atmosphere and more options for the evening.
Is a vacation rental in Kampen worth it?
No. A vacation rental in Kampen is beautifully located and very upscale, but it’s typically extremely expensive and offers comparatively little added value for the price.
The town is quiet, exclusive, and a little elitist — with not much of a classic vacation atmosphere.
