An Overview of Strasbourg’s Districts
The center of Strasbourg is encircled by the Ill River and sits on an island: the Grande Île. This is where you’ll find most of the top attractions in Strasbourg, including the famous Cathedral.
The historic quarter of La Petite France borders the Grande Île as well.
To the northeast of the Grande Île lies the Gare Tribunal neighborhood, home to Strasbourg’s main train station.
The Esplanade district is located south of the city center. It’s Strasbourg‘s student quarter, packed with cool bars and hangouts.
A bit farther from the center, in the northeast of Strasbourg, is the European Quarter, home to the European Parliament.
Grande Île and La Petite France
The Grande Île is the ideal place to stay in Strasbourg if it’s your first time in the city and you’re here primarily for sightseeing.
The Grande Île is home to many of Strasbourg’s most important highlights, including Strasbourg Cathedral, the Maison Kammerzell, and Place Kléber.

Gare Tribunal is Strasbourg’s train station district, located to the northwest of the city center. The neighborhood stretches from the MAMCS and the Barrage Vauban up to the area north of the station.
You’re in a strategically great spot here — especially if you’re arriving by train, since your hotel won’t be far from the platform.
The most important sights, such as Place Kléber and the Cathedral, are all reachable on foot.
The historic quarter of La Petite France is also just a few minutes’ walk away. If you’re staying in the southern part of Gare Tribunal, it’s practically around the corner.

In the student neighborhood of Bourse-Esplanade-Krutenau, prices are a bit lower and there are plenty of pubs and bars that are especially popular with locals. The district borders the city center of Strasbourg to the south.
The area is less touristy, giving you a real taste of authentic Strasbourg life. The Krutenau quarter is also one of our favorite under-the-radar spots in Strasbourg!
Places to visit like La Petite France and Strasbourg Cathedral are all reachable on foot or by bike from here.
The long-distance bus stop Parc de l’Étoile, where Flixbus services from Germany also arrive, is right on the edge of the neighborhood.
