The Stellenbosch Hotel
The Stellenbosch Hotel is our pick if you want an affordable place to stay in Stellenbosch.
The location is totally central — everything in Stellenbosch is walkable — and kids of all ages are welcome. It doesn’t have a pool and won’t win any design awards, but it’s perfectly solid. If you’re watching your budget, you don’t need the flashiest hotel anyway.
The value for money is really excellent. You can get a double room for $130 per night including breakfast.
Eendracht Hotel
Looking for an affordable Stellenbosch hotel for your vacation with kids? We’ve got a second great option: the Eendracht Hotel.
There’s a pool here and plenty of room types for families, no matter how big yours is or how old your kids are. Standard double rooms are available too, starting at around $130 per night.
The city center is right on your doorstep. You’re staying on Dorp Street — one of the coolest spots in Stellenbosch, where most of the action happens.
Hotel Krige
Hotel Krige is fairly new and looks it. It’s not a classic Winelands property — it’s a modern hotel in Stellenbosch with large, comfortable rooms.
You’re in a very central location, kids of all ages are welcome, and there’s an underground garage for your car. No pool, but the value for money is genuinely excellent. Expect to pay around $150 per night for a double room including breakfast — fair!
Bonne Esperance Boutique Guest House
Our favorite!
The Bonne Esperance Boutique Guest House is simply wonderful. You’re staying in a cool boutique hotel directly across from the University’s Botanical Garden. From the outside, it looks like it was plucked straight from the Victorian era.
Inside, it’s stylish, bright, and put together with a lot of love. Breakfast is served on the veranda that wraps around the house — you can add it for $10. It’s not included in the base price of around $160 per night.
Children are only welcome from age six and up. But you can stay in cool family rooms and apartments.

River Manor Boutique Hotel
If you really want to treat yourself, the River Manor Boutique Hotel is the right choice. Relax by the pools, settle into luxurious rooms, or pamper yourself at the spa. Children are only allowed from age 12 and up.

Penelope's Stellenbosch
Penelope’s Stellenbosch is absolutely charming. With only four rooms, it’s run by Penelope with genuine warmth and care.
The double rooms are cozy and breakfast is included in the price of around $110 per night. The guesthouse sits in a small village just outside Stellenbosch — only a five-minute drive to the center, where you’ll find great places to eat. There’s also a small shared kitchen if you’d rather cook for yourself.
Children are welcome from age 12 and up, and there’s a pool.
EersteBosch Cottages
The EersteBosch Cottages are located about 15 minutes southwest of Stellenbosch by car, heading toward Cape Town and the coast.
There are three cottages in different sizes — and honestly, all of them are stunning. One has an extra sofa bed for families, and one has three bedrooms with three double beds plus a sofa bed. Kids of all ages are welcome.
Each cottage is beautifully decorated with its own private terrace. The pool sits right in the middle, and from there you get a gorgeous view over the vineyards.
Pricing is really fair too. The smallest cottage with one double room starts at around $140 per night.
Mont Angelis
Mont Angelis sits in the heart of the stunning Cape Winelands landscape. It’s about a 20-minute drive to Stellenbosch, but the setting is completely peaceful and it’s right next to Waterford Estate — the #1-rated winery near Stellenbosch on TripAdvisor. You can even walk there in 25 minutes if you’re heading to a wine tasting.
Given the location next to such a popular winery, plus a pool and genuinely beautiful surroundings, the price is surprisingly reasonable. We think $170 per night for a double room is excellent value.
Children are only welcome from age 12 and up — but you can book a lovely family suite with two double beds.
Sugarbird Manor

Sugarbird Manor is a manor house on a working protea farm about 15 minutes from Stellenbosch by car. It’s been converted into a boutique hotel and is decorated with exceptional taste.
From the hotel, you get a sweeping panorama over the vineyards — especially beautiful when you’re lounging by the pool. If you feel like stretching your legs, you can stroll through the vineyards on the large grounds.
All of this for around $150 per night for a double room. Families with kids pay a little more, but you can stay in a deluxe family room with children of all ages.

If you want the full Winelands experience, spending the night on a South African wine estate is the way to go.

Staying on a wine estate is the classic choice when it comes to Stellenbosch accommodation. You think of South Africa’s wine region and you immediately picture waking up among the vines.
We’ll be honest — it’s pretty cool. We’d love to spend a night at Delaire too, we just can’t bring ourselves to spend $2,000 a night.
Among the most famous and beautiful wine estates in Stellenbosch, the only one that makes financial sense to us is Spier Wine Farm. But we’ve also found three other wine estates that aren’t as well known yet still offer fantastic stays at a fair price.
Marianne Wine Estate
Marianne Wine Estate sits in the middle of the vineyards, a little ways from Stellenbosch — about a 20-minute drive into town.
It’s not one of the most famous estates, but that’s exactly what makes it an under-the-radar find with affordable rates. At $130 per night for a double room on a wine estate with all the trimmings, it’s hard to say no.
There’s also plenty of room for families, no matter how old your kids are.
Ladybird-Vineyards Guesthouse
The Ladybird-Vineyards Guesthouse is technically a guesthouse, but it’s set on a wine estate too — they just don’t do their own tastings. Those happen right across the road at Kanonkop Wine Estate. If that’s not a dealbreaker, you’ll find a fantastic wine estate experience here at a very fair price. A double room costs around $160 per night.
The guesthouse has a great vibe and a real family feel. Kids of all ages are welcome. It’s surrounded by vineyards on all sides and sits beside a small lake — like a little slice of paradise. And it’s just a few minutes’ drive to Stellenbosch.

Asara Wine Estate
Asara Wine Estate has everything you’d want from a Stellenbosch wine estate: wine tasting, its own restaurant, a café, a cigar lounge, and a bar. Basically the full package. For that, we think $320 per night including breakfast is still somewhat reasonable — though prices do fluctuate quite a bit.
The estate is still within Stellenbosch, but it’s no longer walkable from the center. By bike, you’re about 15–20 minutes from downtown.
Children of all ages are welcome.
Spier Wine Farm
Spier Wine Farm is one of the most famous wineries in Stellenbosch. Among the well-known estates, it’s the only one we’d seriously consider for an overnight stay. At $375 per night for a double room, it’s still not cheap — but at least it’s in the realm of reasonable.
Spier is also famous in the Instagram world for its delicious, fully packed picnic basket that you can pre-order.
It’s a popular choice for families too. There are rooms with an extra sofa bed, kids of all ages are welcome, and there are multiple pools. Just keep in mind that family rooms will cost a bit extra.

We traveled through South Africa with two kids and know how tricky it can be to find great family-friendly places to stay near Stellenbosch. So we’ve pulled together the options from our recommendations that are especially well-suited for families — all of them have a pool.

Our Accommodation in Stellenbosch
We stayed in Kylemore, in the area around Stellenbosch. The modern Airbnb was — along with the one in Paternoster on the West Coast of South Africa — by far the best place we stayed on our entire South Africa road trip.
The location was perfect for us: 15 minutes by car to Stellenbosch, five minutes to Tokara Winery, and 25 minutes to Franschhoek. And the views from the rooms out over the vineyards are absolutely breathtaking.
The property itself is seriously cool. It consists of two stylish houses connected by a glass bridge — you can book them separately or together, which makes it perfect when traveling with friends.
We spent a week there. If we were only spending one or two days in the wine region, we’d probably stay directly in Stellenbosch instead — everything’s walkable and the Airbnb has a two-night minimum anyway. For two people, the cost is around $430.
General Tips for Staying in Stellenbosch
One golden rule for South Africa: book as early as possible. The best hotels, lodges, and wine estate stays fill up fast. Especially during peak season — November through March — you’ll have a much better shot if you book about six to twelve months in advance.
If you’re driving through South Africa by car, you’ll have a lot of flexibility in choosing where to stay. The main decision is really just whether you want to be right in the center of Stellenbosch — within walking distance of cafés and restaurants — or out in nature or on a wine estate.
If you want to visit wineries for tastings, ask your accommodation about a driver or book a guided tour. In Stellenbosch, the Vine Hopper is a great option, and in Franschhoek there’s the Wine Tram — both work like hop-on/hop-off services and take you to multiple wineries.
