In a nutshell
- Sri Lanka has accommodations for every budget. We share a mix of small family-run guesthouses, beachfront hotels, boutique hotels, and luxury resorts.
- Every recommendation is a place we stayed ourselves during our Sri Lanka road trip — or one we’d book immediately on our next visit.
- You’ll also find practical advice on what to expect with hotel prices and when to book in advance.
How Much Do Hotels in Sri Lanka Cost?
Honestly, the value for money on accommodations in Sri Lanka isn’t quite as good as in Thailand, where you can sometimes get truly top-notch places with Western standards for very little money.
You can find basic guesthouses in Sri Lanka for under 20 euros per night. If you want a higher standard, though, you’ll need to spend a bit more (at least 40 to 50 euros per room/night). There’s no upper limit.
Breakfast is included at many places to stay.
We traveled to Sri Lanka in September, which is the best time to visit Sri Lanka if you want to explore the east coast. Hotel prices there were higher than on the south and west coasts, where it was the off-season.
How Do You Book Your Hotel in Sri Lanka?
We booked most of our Sri Lanka accommodations from home. We only booked the hotels on the southwest coast two to three days in advance once we were already there, since it was rainy season and we wanted to wait and see what the weather would be like.
You can also travel through Sri Lanka in true backpacker style and simply find somewhere to stay spontaneously on the spot. This works great if you want to stay flexible about when and where you go.
During peak travel seasons, however, the nicest places can already be fully booked.
That’s why we recommend booking at least the accommodations you definitely want in Sri Lanka in advance. We always book our hotels through Booking.com.
Our Accommodations in Sri Lanka and Our Hotel Recommendations
In Sri Lanka, we stayed in both hotels and smaller guesthouses.
We love small, locally run spots the most. Everything feels a bit more personal and authentic, and the best part: you get real insider tips straight from the source!
There are some places we can’t recommend — we weren’t entirely satisfied with things like cleanliness or upkeep. And we only want to point you toward the best.
That’s why this article only features accommodations that we personally loved or would choose for our next trip to Sri Lanka.
Hotel Recommendations on Sri Lanka's South Coast
Most hotels in Sri Lanka are on the south coast, where many of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka can be found. Here you’ll find plenty of great places to stay with the ocean right outside your door. These are our top three favorites.
Turtle Bay Boutique Hotel
Kalametiya
On our road trip through Sri Lanka, we spent four days here ourselves and enjoyed every single minute.
The boutique hotel has only six rooms in total — so you can really unwind here, because it almost feels like you have the whole place to yourself.
The garden, just a few steps from the beach, is absolutely beautiful, and we completely fell in love with the infinity pool.
Our highlight, though, was the incredibly attentive and warm staff. You’ll just feel right at home here — promise!

Kiss Blossom
Mirissa
Looking for a small, family-run hotel in Sri Lanka in a quiet location, ideally with a lovely garden and pool? We’ve got exactly the right place for you!
Kiss Blossom has only four rooms, all of which are super modern and genuinely spacious. It was built in March 2023, so everything is brand new and in excellent condition.
What we love most is the location on a small lake, a little away from the busy center of Mirissa. By tuk-tuk or taxi, you’re there in just about ten minutes.
Our tip: Rent a canoe from the hotel and head out on the lake at sunset — seriously stunning!
Haven Beach Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya
Haven Beach Hiriketiya is the perfect pick for a relaxed beach vacation in Sri Lanka. It’s right at Hiriketiya Beach, which is especially popular with surfers — but it’s also a great spot to just kick back, and it’s less crowded than Mirissa. We really love that!
The hotel is right in the middle of the action. Nearby you’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, and bars where you can wind down after a day at the beach.
The rooms are modern and cozy. You can choose between an ocean view or a view into the jungle, where you can watch the monkeys.
Hotel Recommendations on Sri Lanka's East Coast
Sri Lanka’s east coast is equally known for luxury resorts with all the bells and whistles and for chilled-out surf towns with a laid-back vibe along miles of beaches.
No matter which you prefer — we’ve picked out a great place to stay on Sri Lanka’s east coast for both types.
Amaya Beach Passikudah
Pasikuda
Want to treat yourself during your Sri Lanka vacation? Then the 5-star hotel Amaya Beach is perfect for you. We spent one night here and definitely could have stayed longer.
The beds in the ultra-modern rooms are incredibly comfortable, and the laid-back beach bar serves the best cocktails. If you’re in the mood for a bit more action, you can work up a sweat at the fitness center or on the beach volleyball court.
On top of that, the hotel is right on the beach. The hotel’s own stretch of sand is perfect for snorkeling — the rocks and coral reefs in the water are home to quite a few fish.
Our tip: If you walk a bit further to the left along the beach, you’ll reach a public section without any rocks. It’s much more comfortable for swimming there.
The Spice Trail
Arugam Bay
Having a room with a balcony or terrace at your accommodation in Sri Lanka isn’t that unusual. But a room with its own private little garden — that’s something we’ve only ever seen at The Spice Trail!
Super handy for rolling out your yoga mat or hanging up laundry. And that’s topped off by the large hotel garden with a great pool.
Whether you’re in Arugam Bay to surf or to relax — the walk to the beach is spot-on: step out of your room, walk 70 meters, and your feet are already in the sand.
Hotel Recommendations on Sri Lanka's West Coast
Your trip will likely begin on Sri Lanka’s west coast, since that’s where the airport is. Most travelers spend the first or last few days of their trip in Negombo or Colombo.
Both cities have a huge selection of hotels. We’ve already done the searching for you — here are our top two picks.
Ocean Breeze Luxury Studio Apartment
Negombo
Ocean Breeze was the last place we stayed on our trip, and it was perfect for a few relaxed final days.
The hotel manager lived abroad for a long time, and you can see that reflected in the ultra-modern apartments, which even have their own stylish kitchenette.
We also loved the rooftop pool, which offers a seriously beautiful view over Negombo. If you’d rather head to the beach, it’s only about 50 meters away.
Ocean Breeze Luxury Studio Apartment
Urban Bliss Studio
Colombo
Large luxury hotels are easy to find in Colombo — there are plenty of them. But if you prefer something cozier and above all more personal, we have a real under-the-radar pick for you: the Urban Bliss Studio.
This small, family-run guesthouse is located in a quiet part of Colombo and has only two rooms, both decorated with a great deal of attention to detail.
Your traditional Sri Lankan breakfast is served in a charming little courtyard, where you can process everything you’ve experienced in loud, chaotic Colombo at your own pace.
The real standout, though, is definitely the warm and welcoming owners, who have the best tips for Colombo ready for you and create a truly home-like atmosphere.
Hotel Recommendation in Sri Lanka's North
Sri Lanka’s north is still a true off-the-beaten-path destination. There are very few tourists here and you get to experience authentic Sri Lanka. The most well-known city is Jaffna — and we’ve found a truly special hotel there for you.
FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts
Jaffna
At FOX JAFFNA, the themes of art and history run throughout the entire hotel. You’ll notice this right away from the rooms decorated with paintings by significant local artists.
On top of that, there’s even an art exhibition and a small history museum dedicated to the history of northern Sri Lanka right in the hotel. Truly special!
But of course, you’re not just here to learn — you can also properly unwind, best of all in the beautiful palm garden with a pool.
Hotel Recommendations in the Interior
Every Sri Lanka traveler is drawn to the beautiful coastal spots — and rightly so. But you absolutely shouldn’t skip Sri Lanka’s interior either, where you’ll find culture and nature in abundance at some of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular attractions.
Our two favorite hotels in the interior are, naturally, set in incredibly beautiful surroundings right in the heart of nature. We love it!
Lavendra Paradise
Ella
Attention foodies: At Lavendra Paradise in Ella, we had by far the most delicious breakfast of our entire trip. Coconut roti, fresh fruit, pumpkin curry, pancakes — yes, we’re instantly raving about it all over again!
But that’s not the only reason we loved it here: the view from the terrace over Ella’s highlands is absolutely incredible!
The guesthouse is also super centrally located, just about a ten-minute walk from Ella’s Main Street, yet it’s still very peaceful. And the value for money is great too. Sounds amazing, right?
The Green Jungle
Dambulla
At The Green Jungle, the name says it all: this small guesthouse with just two rooms and a large terrace really is situated right in the middle of nature.
In the large garden of the incredibly warm hosts, mangoes, papayas, coconuts, and more are growing — and they’re brought to you at breakfast or just for a taste whenever you like. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!
In general, you simply won’t want for anything here: the family will prepare a delicious Sri Lankan dinner for you upon request, organize excursions, and lend you scooters or bicycles. It’s truly an all-inclusive, worry-free experience.
