In a nutshell
- Sapa is nestled in the mountains of northern Vietnam — it’s the perfect destination if you want to spend a few days in nature and go hiking, including up the highest mountain in Vietnam.
- We’ll show you the best places to stay in Sapa. You can choose between the town center, a hotel on Sa Pa Lake, or a peaceful retreat in the mountains around Sapa.
- For the most well-connected location, we recommend the Sapa Relax Hotel & Spa in the center. If you’d rather wake up right in the middle of nature, the En Hotel Sapa in Lao Chải is our top pick.
- One important thing to know: many hotels in Sapa don’t have heating. This can get really uncomfortable in winter. At a minimum, make sure your hotel has heated blankets.
Where to Stay in Sapa? The Best Areas on a Map
Sapa is not as large as Hanoi or Saigon. There are no real neighborhoods in Sapa.
To give you a better overview of where to stay in Sapa during your trip to Sapa, we’ve still divided the city into two areas: the town center and the area around the lake.
You can also stay in small villages out in nature in the surrounding area.
We recommend these three areas for your Sapa accommodation:
- Sapa Center/Sapa Town: central, lively, and a great base — Our hotel pick: Sapa Relax Hotel
- Sa Pa Lake: close to the center, but more affordable — Our hotel pick: Muong Thanh Sapa Hotel
- Lao Chải: authentic, right in the middle of nature — Our hotel pick: En Hotel Sapa

Around Sapa’s Main Square, you’ll find a wide selection of restaurants and bars. It’s no surprise that most of the best hotels in Sapa are located here as well.

Staying at Sa Pa Lake

Perfect for you if you don’t want it too touristy, but still want to stay close to the center.
Sa Pa Lake sits in the inner city of Sapa, east of the center. It’s a great photo spot and perfect for a relaxed stroll along the water. Several hotels around the lake offer stunning views of the water and the mountains behind it.
The lake area is a bit quieter than the center, and your Sapa accommodation here tends to be a bit more affordable — though even the hotels in the center won’t blow your budget.
Advantages of staying at Sa Pa Lake
- Less crowded than the center
- Close to the hiking trails
- Affordable accommodations
Disadvantage of staying at Sa Pa Lake
- Smaller selection of places to stay
