Safe neighborhoods in São Paulo

  • Bela Vista
  • Vila Mariana

An overview of the neighborhoods on a map

To help you get your bearings, we’ve marked our recommendations for where to stay in São Paulo on a map. You’ll also find some of the most important things to see in São Paulo there.

This map shows the best neighborhoods in São Paulo and three important sights

For first-time visitors

Staying in Bela Vista

Bela Vista is the right choice if you’re visiting São Paulo for the first time and want to pack in as many sights as possible in a short amount of time.

First, one thing to know: no matter which neighborhood you stay in, expect long distances in São Paulo. With over 12 million residents, the city is simply massive.

To save yourself as much travel time as possible, Bela Vista is the most strategically located neighborhood in São Paulo that’s also safe. To the north, it borders the city center with its cathedral and Mercado Municipal. To the south lies Parque Ibirapuera, and to the east is the hip neighborhood of Liberdade/Japão.

Bela Vista also borders the famous Avenida Paulista, one of the most iconic streets in the city and absolutely worth a stroll.

Since the neighborhood is quite large, it’s not all the same. The southern part is more affluent, more commercial, and livelier. The northern part has some excellent restaurants and sits closer to the center, but can feel a little quiet in places.

With Metro lines 1 and 2, you’re well connected here. Just make sure your hotel isn’t too far from a metro station — and Uber and taxis are available around the clock too.

Advantages of staying in Bela Vista:

  • Strategically excellent location between many sights
  • Well connected to the metro
  • Several great restaurants

Disadvantages of staying in Bela Vista:

  • Not a whole lot to see within the neighborhood itself
  • A somewhat hectic area with busy main roads

Our hotel recommendations for Bela Vista

The Laghetto Stilo is a top modern hotel on the southern edge of Bela Vista, just a five-minute walk from a metro station. The rooms are comfortable, the breakfast is great, and the prices are really reasonable.

Alternative and hip

Staying in Pinheiros

Pinheiros is the right neighborhood for you if you want to stay in a hip, lively area with cool restaurants and bars.

Pinheiros is the quintessential hipster neighborhood in São Paulo and is especially worth considering if you want plenty of restaurants and trendy bars right around the corner. There are also several popular nightclubs here.

But even if you prefer a more laid-back vibe, Pinheiros works really well — there are plenty of quiet spots too. You’ll find less traffic here than in most of São Paulo’s neighborhoods, and the buildings aren’t quite as towering.

The standout sight in Pinheiros is Beco do Batman, an alley packed with incredible street art. To reach the city’s other highlights, you’ll need to hop on the metro or grab an Uber.

With Metro line 4, you can get to the center quickly, and Metro line 9 takes you to Ponte Octávio Frias. Plenty of Ubers and taxis run through Pinheiros as well.

Advantages of staying in Pinheiros:

  • For us, the most beautiful and charming neighborhood in São Paulo
  • Well connected to the metro
  • Tons of great restaurants and bars

Disadvantages of staying in Pinheiros:

  • A bit out of the way from many sights and the city center
  • Some corners get noisy at night

Our hotel recommendations for Pinheiros

There are many cool hostels in Pinheiros. We especially recommend the Lamparina Hostel — super stylish and in a great location.

If you’re after more comfort, the Radisson Pinheiros is a great pick: brand new, modern rooms, and a delicious breakfast.

For the stopover

Staying near Guarulhos Airport

Guarulhos is the largest airport in Brazil. If you have a short layover here, your best bet is to spend the night near the airport.

Guarulhos is its own city — and unfortunately dangerous in many areas. So don’t venture too far from the airport for your overnight stay.

If you have a longer layover and enough time to explore São Paulo, it’s better to stay in the city itself. Guarulhos is located quite far outside the center.

Note: There are two other major airports in São Paulo, so check carefully which one your flight uses. The other airports are called Congonhas and Viracopos (in Campinas).

Our hotel recommendations for Guarulhos Airport

The Pullman Hotel is located right at the airport. It’s very comfortable and simply the most convenient option — you can practically walk straight from the plane to your room.

If you’re looking for a more affordable place to stay, we recommend the Comfort Hotel. No aircraft noise, and the beds are seriously comfortable.
