In a nutshell

  • First-time visitors, we recommend Copacabana — central, right on the beach, and iconic. Our top hotel pick: Miramar Copacabana — a luxurious stay with a rooftop bar and pool.
  • The neighboring beach district of Ipanema is a bit more upscale and hip. Our top pick: Ipanema Inn Hotel — great location and seriously comfortable beds.
  • For a more affordable yet still central option, go with Botafogo. Our top pick: Injoy Suítes & Aparts — excellent value and a quiet, safe location.
  • Below, we break down all three neighborhoods in detail so you can find the best area and hotel in Rio de Janeiro for your trip.

How safe is Rio de Janeiro for an overnight stay?

Before we share our hotel tips for Rio de Janeiro, you need to understand how safe the city really is.

The truth is, there is no neighborhood in Rio that is completely safe. No matter where you stay, always take an Uber or taxi at night (from around 10 PM onward) — never walk back to your hotel on foot.

During the day, most of Rio’s tourist neighborhoods are safe — but not all of them. There are some areas we’d strongly advise against staying in.

Here’s a breakdown of Rio de Janeiro’s most well-known neighborhoods, along with our honest safety assessment of which ones get the green light for overnight stays and which ones don’t:

Safe areas to stay in:

  • Copacabana
  • Ipanema
  • Botafogo
  • Leblon
  • Santa Teresa
  • Recreio

Places we don’t recommend:

  • Lapa
  • Favelas and areas bordering favelas
  • Maracanã

Lapa is Rio’s nightlife district, located in the city center. Both day and night, you’ll find a lot of deserted streets here, and honestly, we never felt completely at ease in Lapa.

Maracanã is home to the famous stadium of the same name — but the surrounding neighborhood is very poor and therefore quite dangerous.

Favelas are Rio’s low-income communities. You should avoid entering them and, where possible, avoid staying near them too. The exception is a handful of “tourist favelas” that are relatively safe and even offer accommodations. We’d only suggest staying there if you already know Rio well.

The best neighborhoods to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Let’s take a closer look at our three favorite areas for where to stay in Rio de Janeiro. All of them are solid choices if you want easy access to the top things to see in Rio.

  • Copacabana: Ideal for first-time visitors and beach lovers.
  • Ipanema: The slightly hipper, more upscale alternative to Copacabana.
  • Botafogo: Great if you want a central location without breaking the bank.

For first-time visitors

Staying in Copacabana

Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro
Who hasn’t dreamed of a hotel on Copacabana?

Copacabana is our top pick if it’s your first time in Rio de Janeiro, you want to do lots of sightseeing, and you’d like to be right on the beach.

The Copacabana neighborhood sits right along one of the most famous beaches in Rio. It has the largest concentration of well-known hotels in the city, and if it’s your first visit, Copacabana is hard to beat — you’re in a central spot with quick access to all the major highlights.

When choosing your hotel in Copacabana, try to stay as close to the beach as possible. The farther you get from the waterfront, the poorer — and therefore less safe — the area becomes. A few favelas border Copacabana, so proximity to the beach really matters here.

Copacabana has plenty of restaurants and eateries. The same rule applies: right along the beach is noticeably more touristy, upscale, and pricey. Just a few blocks back, you’ll find loads of affordable shops, bars, and local restaurants — there’s genuinely something for every budget.

Metro Line A and several bus lines run through Copacabana, and taxis and Uber are available around the clock.

Advantages of staying in Copacabana:

  • Central location and close to many sights
  • Right on Rio’s most famous beach
  • Great public transportation connections

Disadvantages of staying in Copacabana:

  • Very touristy
  • The outskirts of Copacabana can be dangerous

Our hotel recommendations for Copacabana

The Miramar Copacabana is a beautiful, luxurious hotel that’s still surprisingly affordable. Comfortable rooms, a fantastic breakfast buffet, and a rooftop bar with a pool — it really does have it all.

Staying in Ipanema

Ipanema Beach
The hotels in Ipanema are all located near the beautiful beach

Ipanema is the perfect choice if you want to stay on the beach, see plenty of sights, and value a hip and upscale vibe.

Ipanema and Copacabana are honestly very similar. Like Copacabana, Ipanema is centrally located, close to the most important sights, and right on the beach. On a map, the two districts look almost identical.

That said, there are a few key differences. Ipanema has fewer big-name hotels and feels a little less overrun with tourists. In return, you get more hip bars, cafés, and boutiques. It’s also a bit pricier and more stylish — partly because Ipanema borders Leblon, one of the most upscale neighborhoods in all of Rio.

You’re well connected to Copacabana and the city center via Metro Line 4, and taxis and Uber are easy to find at any hour.

Advantages of staying in Ipanema:

  • Central location and close to many sights
  • Right on the beach
  • Stylish and upscale neighborhood

Disadvantages of staying in Ipanema:

  • Very touristy and expensive
  • Longer travel time to the city center

Our hotel recommendations for Ipanema

For true luxury, we love the Hotel Fasano — the rooftop pool is seriously breathtaking. A more affordable alternative is the Ipanema Inn Hotel: simple rooms with super comfortable beds and excellent service.

Staying in Botafogo

Botafogo neighborhood and Sugarloaf Mountain
Botafogo is centrally located and is a relatively affordable neighborhood to stay in Rio de Janeiro

Botafogo is the right pick if you want a central location without spending too much on accommodations.

Botafogo is less touristy than Ipanema and Copacabana — largely because there’s no nice beach for swimming here.

If being right on the beach isn’t your top priority, Botafogo is a really smart choice for your Rio de Janeiro stay. The neighborhood sits in a perfectly central spot between Copacabana and the city center — an ideal base for visiting the Christ the Redeemer statue and exploring all of the city’s top highlights.

You’ll also find a great variety of restaurants and bars here, plus excellent metro and bus connections.

Another bonus: hotel prices in Botafogo are noticeably lower than in Copacabana and Ipanema. And the area tends to feel a bit safer at night since there are fewer tourists — and therefore fewer opportunistic muggings.

Advantages of staying in Botafogo:

  • Strategically great location between the city center and the beaches
  • More affordable lodging and less touristy
  • Lots of bars and restaurants

Disadvantages of staying in Botafogo:

  • Not directly on a nice beach

Our hotel recommendations for Botafogo

The Injoy Suítes & Aparts are a great option for budget travelers — incredibly affordable, close to the metro, and yet really quiet. You’ll also feel very safe in the surrounding area.
