In a nutshell
- Oldenburg is a fairly small city where everything is close together. For your trip, think about whether you want to stay centrally in the old town, conveniently in the train station district, or in the peaceful surrounding area.
- Our top pick is the train station district. You’ll find a solid selection of hotels at great prices and still be just a few minutes from the center – e.g. HIIVE Oldenburg
- The old town is the heart of the city. This is where you can stroll around, sit in cafés, and stay close to the most important sights – e.g. Altera Hotel
- If you prefer a quieter pace and want to explore the region as well, we recommend Bad Zwischenahn on the Zwischenahner Meer – e.g. Residenz Nebelgruß
Where to Stay in Oldenburg?
Oldenburg is a fairly large city, but it’s still relatively small. You’ll find your way around quickly. The city center is compact, many highlights are close together, and almost everything is easily walkable.
Around the old town you’ll find the most important sights, restaurants, and shops. And thanks to the university, the vibe in the city is very relaxed and young.
The hotel selection is good, but not huge. Central accommodations in particular tend to fill up fast — so booking early is worth it. Alternatively, you can also stay in the surrounding area.

- Station Quarter: Affordable, central & well-connected – HIIVE Oldenburg
- Old Town/City Center: lots of activities right at your doorstep – Altera Hotel

Staying in the Station Quarter

Our top pick for Oldenburg is the Station Quarter. Here you’ll enjoy short distances to the center, a small but really good selection of accommodations, and excellent transport connections.
The neighborhood sits between the main train station and the city center and borders directly on the old town. So you’re just a few minutes’ walk from the heart of the city.
When it comes to hotels, this area offers the best selection in Oldenburg. Many accommodations are more modern, often a bit more affordable, and overall just the most hassle-free choice. At the same time, the proximity to the train station means you’re perfectly connected — whether for your arrival or for day trips.
Even though the Station Quarter isn’t as pretty as the old town, the location means you’re not really making any compromises. The most beautiful parts of the city are just a few minutes away on foot.
Advantages of staying in the Station Quarter:
- often cheaper than in the center
- excellent train station connections
- city center within walking distance
- hardly any real compromises on location
Disadvantages of staying in the Station Quarter:
- less charming than the old town
- surroundings can be a bit busy at times

Staying in Bad Zwischenahn

Bad Zwischenahn is our alternative for you if you want to explore not just Oldenburg as a city, but also the entire region around the Ammerland.
The town is located about 15 kilometers west of Oldenburg and is a popular spa resort right on the Zwischenahner Meer lake. It’s significantly quieter here than in the city. You can look forward to lots of nature, water, lovely walking and cycling paths, and a relaxed atmosphere.
One highlight here is the Park der Gärten. This is a large, lovingly designed garden complex with various themed gardens that you can stroll through at your leisure.
Despite the peaceful setting, you can get to Oldenburg very quickly. By train or car, you’re in the city in about 10 to 15 minutes.
