The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Lima with Map
Lima is a huge city and the largest in Peru. When it comes to where to stay, though, we only recommend a few neighborhoods — and the historic center isn’t one of them.
While many of the most important sights are located there, the old town is otherwise pretty hectic and not that safe in the evenings. So you’re better off staying in a safe and quiet neighborhood close to the ocean.

Staying in Miraflores
With its safe location, wide range of hotels, and a great selection of restaurants, Miraflores is the top choice for first-time visitors to Lima.
Miraflores has the largest selection of hotels in Lima — it’s the tourist neighborhood par excellence. The location near the ocean is seriously great. You can take wonderful walks and enjoy cool activities like surfing or paragliding.
You won’t be short of great restaurants and nightlife options here either. This is where Lima’s nightlife really happens! But don’t worry — plenty of streets are totally quiet if you want a more relaxed stay.
Getting to the historic center and its many highlights is easy by metro bus or Uber. The hip neighborhood of Barranco is also just a short ride away.

With its abundant street art and charming alleyways, Barranco is home to some truly beautiful spots in Lima. It’s a genuinely trendy neighborhood with real character.
For accommodation, Barranco is something of a local favorite — you’ll find plenty of affordable, small guesthouses with a very personal, family-run feel. The mix of hip, touristy restaurants and authentic local eateries is great too.
You’re also well connected to the city center by metro, and the ocean is right around the corner. If nightlife isn’t a top priority, Barranco makes a fantastic base.

If Lima feels too chaotic and you’re not a fan of the big-city hustle, look for a place to stay in San Isidro. It’s a quieter residential and financial district with lots of high-rises.
It’s a very affluent area where everything runs a bit more smoothly — think Miraflores but with fewer tourists and more parks.
The restaurant and bar scene isn’t as lively, but it’s a wonderful area for leisurely walks and a really solid choice for a family vacation with kids.
You’ll mainly find luxury hotels here — very few small, budget-friendly options.

Staying near the Airport
We’d recommend staying near the airport mainly if you have no plans to explore Lima and are simply passing through on a stopover.
There are plenty of options for really affordable accommodation near the airport. Hotels inside the terminal itself, on the other hand, tend to be expensive.
If you have an early or late flight out of Lima, staying right by the airport can make a lot of sense. The big advantage: you won’t have to take an Uber for around 45 minutes in the middle of the night, which buys you nearly an extra hour of sleep.
That said, if you’re visiting Lima the day before or after your flight, you’d still need to Uber into the city and back — and traffic can be brutal. In that case, you might as well stay in a proper neighborhood.
