For your first visit to Leipzig, we recommend staying in the city center if you like to be centrally located on your city trips.

Things get livelier in the south and west of the city: vegan cafés, great burgers, independent shops, and an alternative crowd. The north is greener and a bit quieter. Leipzig’s east side is less developed for tourism, but still worth a visit.

You can easily walk from the city center to the Südvorstadt. All other neighborhoods are reachable by public transit, by car, or — even better — by bike. Cycling is simply part of life in Leipzig!

The bike path network is enormous and the routes across the city are seriously well developed. At most intersections, you get your own dedicated lane.

Nextbike bikes are available throughout the city — just 1 euro for 30 minutes, with a maximum of 9 euros for 24 hours.

Prices and Tourism Fees

Leipzig is genuinely affordable. You can find a super nice hostel from around 50 euros for a double room, a stylishly furnished loft with plenty of space from around 90 euros, and proper luxury from just 120 euros per night. Compared to hotels in Berlin or hotels in Hamburg, Leipzig is noticeably easier on the wallet.

Since January 2019, Leipzig charges a guest tax for every overnight stay: if the price per night is under 30 euros, you pay 1 euro per person per night; above that, it’s 3 euros.

Exempt are children under 18, school and college students, and apprentices up to age 25, as well as people with severe disabilities and their accompanying persons.

If this is your first time in Leipzig, staying in the center gives you the best base — you can explore the city in every direction from here.

Leipzig’s historic center is quite expansive — and that’s exactly what makes it great. There’s plenty of room to roam, and as you walk through downtown, you’ll pass a whole host of Leipzig’s top sights along the way.

You’ll almost certainly wander through the famous Mädler Passage. These kinds of arcades pop up throughout the city center — they were trade fair buildings at the turn of the 20th century, and they’re seriously beautiful.

The modern building of Leipzig University sits right in the center, as does the Panorama Tower.

If you want to explore Leipzig’s museums, dig into the city’s history, or book a city tour, accommodation in the center is the obvious choice. There’s a great selection of hotels here, and photo opportunities around every corner.

For Hipsters: Staying in Leipzig’s Südvorstadt

Leipzig’s Südvorstadt is almost as central as the city center itself — and it’s the place to be if you want something a little more alternative, colorful, and down-to-earth, with great food and a real neighborhood feel.

The heart and soul of the Südvorstadt is Karl-Liebknecht-Straße — affectionately known as the Karli. Here you’ll find interesting sights and landmarks, cultural events, hidden courtyards, and loads of organic food options. Stay near the Karli and you’ll have an incredible range of dining and nightlife on your doorstep every evening.

The grounds of the Feinkostgenossenschaft with its wonderfully cozy courtyard are especially lovely in summer, when outdoor movies flicker on the screen or open-air theater takes over. As you wander along the Karli, you can pop into all kinds of cafés, restaurants, and bars, or pick up something from one of the independent local shops.

Even off the main street, you’ll stroll past beautiful late 19th-century apartment buildings — some immaculately restored, some charmingly crumbling. A section of the large and popular Clara-Zetkin-Park also falls within the Südvorstadt.

So if you love being close to green spaces but want to soak up an alternative atmosphere during your stay in Leipzig, the Südvorstadt is really the perfect fit.

For Active Travelers: Staying in Leipzig’s Hip Plagwitz

This is the neighborhood for you if you want to see industrial heritage, go on canal tours, and hunt for treasures at flea markets.

You’ll find industrial heritage and creative energy in abundance in Leipzig’s trendy Plagwitz neighborhood. The Karl-Heine-Kanal winds its way through the area, and life is in full bloom along Karl-Heine-Straße.

A whole row of old factories have been renovated and now house Leipzig’s young, creative scene. Walking along Karl-Heine-Straße is just as varied as strolling along the Karli in the Südvorstadt — the bars and little shops here are just a bit hipper.

A canal tour along the Karl-Heine-Kanal and the wider waterway network of the Weiße Elster is an absolute must. The brick façades of the renovated factories look best from the water — it’s a completely unique perspective that you really can’t get anywhere else.

And before you know it, you’re out in nature. Via the canals, you can paddle by canoe or kayak, or sit back and relax on one of the excursion boats with a captain, or even a Venetian gondola with a gondolier.

Plagwitz is the perfect choice if you’ve already visited Leipzig once and want to discover a different, very up-and-coming corner of the city.

For Romantics: Hotel Tips for the Peaceful Neighborhood of Gohlis

Gohlis is probably (still) not a major tourist magnet — and that’s part of its charm. You’ll find some excellent restaurants here, and in Leipzig’s Auwald you can breathe deeply and let your eyes wander across the greenery.

Through the impressive Waldstraßenviertel with its well-kept villas, you’ll reach a large wooded area that stretches from the south of Gohlis up into the north of the center: the Leipziger Auwald.

In the Auwald, you can visit the Leipzig Zoo, and in the Rosental — the northwestern part of the Auwald — the Wackelturm stands right among the trees. From up there, you get a sweeping panorama over the entire city.

Passing the Gohliser Schlösschen with its small park, you’ll spot many beautiful late 19th-century buildings as you continue through the neighborhood.

We’d suggest Gohlis if you’ve already visited Leipzig once or twice, you’re keen to discover something new, and you want to stay in a quiet and family-friendly part of the city.
