In a nutshell
- Distances on La Palma can be deceptively long. Think ahead about which area you want to base yourself in — it really makes a difference.
- The most popular base is Los Cancajos, just south of the capital Santa Cruz. You get the perfect mix of beach, restaurants, and easy access to the island’s highlights.
- If you want guaranteed sunshine and real peace and quiet, we recommend the southwestern part of the island. Our personal favorite there is the Anamcara Suites.
- Prefer staying in the city? Santa Cruz is a charming choice. A lovely boutique option right in the center is the Banana Garden.

The Best Places to Stay on La Palma

La Palma stretches 47 km from north to south and 28 km from east to west — so it’s not a huge island. Even so, it’s really worth thinking carefully about where to stay on La Palma before you book, because the drives between areas can be surprisingly long.
The roads are hilly and seriously winding, so even short distances take time. And while everything feels close on a map, the different parts of the island have very distinct vibes.
These are the 3 areas we recommend for your La Palma accommodation:
- Los Cancajos: Ideal if you want easy access to everything while also being right by the ocean.
- Southwest: Ideal if you want to soak up the sun and enjoy some peace and quiet.
- Santa Cruz: If you’d like to stay in the city.
All-Around Choice: Staying in Los Cancajos
Los Cancajos sits on the east coast, just a stone’s throw from the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma and the airport. Think of it as a small, laid-back resort village with a handful of restaurants, supermarkets, and a lovely dark-sand beach. It’s super convenient — everything is nearby — yet it’s relaxed and not overrun with tourists.
Los Cancajos is a great pick if you’re traveling to La Palma with kids, but also for couples who like to take it easy, and anyone who values comfort and convenience. If you want a mix of beach time, sightseeing on La Palma, and easy access to amenities, this is your spot.
Advantages of staying in Los Cancajos:
- Great location: You’re close to the airport and the capital — really handy if you don’t have much time or just want to get settled quickly.
- Close to the beach: The sheltered beach is perfect for swimming, and you can be in the water within minutes of leaving your hotel.
- Good infrastructure: A solid selection of restaurants and shops means you’ll find everything you need without much effort.
- Great base for day trips: Its central position on the east side means you can reach most of the island’s highlights relatively quickly.
Disadvantages of staying in Los Cancajos:
- More touristy: It’s the most tourist-oriented hub on the island, so it’s a bit less authentic than other corners of La Palma.
- Weather: Being on the east coast, it can sometimes be cloudier here than in the southwest.

For Peace and Sunshine: Staying in the Southwest
The southwest of La Palma is known for its sunny, warm climate — the sun is almost always shining here. The area stretches from Puerto Naos all the way south to Fuencaliente, and the further south you go, the more secluded it gets.
This part of the island is perfect for sun worshippers and anyone who wants to enjoy some real peace and quiet away from the crowds. It’s also a fantastic starting point for hikers, since many of the best trails begin in the west.
Advantages of staying in the southwest:
- Guaranteed sunshine: This is your best bet for plenty of sun and pleasant temperatures, especially in winter.
- Beaches: Wide, dark-sand beaches that are perfect for swimming and relaxing.
- Water sports: Fantastic opportunities for diving, snorkeling, or boating.
- West coast vibes: A laid-back atmosphere with plenty of outdoor activities on your doorstep.
Disadvantages of staying in the southwest:
- Distance to Santa Cruz: It’s a bit of a drive to the capital and the airport — about 45–60 minutes.
- Fewer amenities: Somewhat fewer shops and restaurants to choose from than in Los Cancajos or Santa Cruz.

In the City: Staying in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of La Palma and sits on the east coast. It’s a real gem — colorful balconied houses, narrow alleyways, and a wonderfully relaxed, historic atmosphere. Life here pulses in an authentically Canarian way that’s hard not to love.
Santa Cruz de La Palma is perfect for culture lovers, city enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience local life up close. If you love wandering through old alleyways, sampling local food, and heading out for a leisurely dinner in the evening, this is your corner of the island.
Advantages of staying in Santa Cruz:
- Historic charm: The city itself is truly beautiful and just begs to be explored at a leisurely pace.
- Culture and events: Museums, churches, and there are often small festivals or markets going on.
- Great restaurants and cafés: You could easily try a different restaurant every day of your stay.
- Central location: From here, day trips in any direction — north or south — are totally doable.
Disadvantages of staying in Santa Cruz:
- No swimming beach right on your doorstep: There is a city beach, but it’s not as idyllic as the one in Los Cancajos.
- Parking can be tricky: The streets are narrow in the old town and parking spots can be hard to come by.
