The Old Town around Kiel-Mitte is the heart of the city and the best choice if you want to see as much of Kiel as possible.

Here you’ll find the main shopping streets, plenty of restaurants and cafés, and some of the top sights in Kiel. The harbor is just a short walk away, and the main train station is right nearby too.

Compared to other cities, the Old Town itself is quite modern — Kiel was heavily damaged during World War II. Even so, it’s the most lively part of the city and a great base for exploring at a relaxed pace on foot.

Both spots are right on the Baltic Sea and offer real beaches, fresh sea air, and a much more laid-back feel than Kiel’s city center. It’s less about classic sightseeing here and more about relaxing by the sea.

Schilksee is still part of Kiel and is about 20 minutes from the city center.

Laboe is a separate town on the other side of the fjord, reachable by car in about 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the ferry from Kiel — the ride takes around one hour.
