Staying in Menteng
Menteng is the best choice if it’s your first time in Jakarta and you want a modern neighborhood with plenty of hotels and easy access to the city’s highlights.
Jakarta is chaotic — we won’t sugarcoat that. But if you want to escape the city’s chaos as much as possible, Menteng is the right place for you. It’s probably the neighborhood in Jakarta where you’ll experience the least culture shock.
It sits south of the center and has excellent train connections to Jakarta’s airport and the most important attractions.
You’ll find a wide selection of hotels, great restaurants, and cafés here. The neighborhood is also noticeably more modern than most of Jakarta.
Keep in mind that many parts of Jakarta are run-down and can feel uncomfortable for first-time visitors. Menteng is much more visitor-friendly, and if this is your first time in the city, you really can’t go wrong here.

Sawah Besar is the smart pick if you’re looking for budget-friendly Jakarta hotels and want quick access to all the major highlights.
Sawah Besar is a neighborhood in northeastern Jakarta, stretching from the city center near the Istiqlal Mosque up to the Old Town in the north. It’s not as polished as Menteng and is much more authentic — though also more chaotic and rough around the edges.
We stayed in Sawah Besar ourselves and felt safe despite the lively streets.
The hotel selection is smaller here, but prices are much cheaper than in Menteng. Location-wise, it’s a strategically great base — you’re right between Jakarta’s major attractions like the Monumen Nasional and the Old Town.
Train connections to all corners of Jakarta are solid — just keep in mind that getting to the airport takes quite a while from here.

We stayed at the Ghurfati Wedana Hotel and were really happy with it. Our room was small but clean and had everything we needed. The nearest train station is just under ten minutes away on foot, and the staff are super friendly.

If you’re only in Jakarta for a stopover, your best bet is a hotel near the airport — it saves you a lot of time and hassle.
Honestly, Jakarta isn’t the most beautiful city in Southeast Asia. If you’re only there briefly, you don’t necessarily need to head into the city center to see the sights.
