In a nutshell

  • Hội An is in central Vietnam, with a beautiful Old Town and a great beach. Plan on two to three days to really soak up the atmosphere.
  • There are no hotels inside the Old Town itself. Your best options for where to stay in Hội An are the An Hội and Cẩm Châu neighborhoods next to the Old Town, or right on the beach in Cam An.
  • Most places to stay in Hội An offer free bicycle rentals — so no matter which neighborhood you pick, you can reach the Old Town quickly and easily.
  • Our top recommendation: a hotel in Cẩm Châu near the river. You can bike to both the Old Town and the beach in minutes. Our favorite picks are the Little Gem Boutique Hotel and the Golden Soulmate Homestay.

Where to stay in Hội An?

Hội An is nowhere near as large as, say, Hanoi or Saigon. It’s much more manageable, and there aren’t as many neighborhoods that are well suited for an overnight stay.

The most interesting areas are around the Old Town and right on the beach. One thing to know upfront: you can’t book hotels directly inside Hội An’s Old Town — there simply aren’t any there. Your best bet is to stay in a neighborhood right next to it, since most of the things to do in Hội An are concentrated there.

Most hotels in Hội An offer bicycle rentals. With a bike, you can reach the Old Town in no time. Traffic here is incredibly relaxed — no comparison to Hanoi or Saigon. Every hotel we feature in this article has bikes available.

If you also want to squeeze in some beach time during your Vietnam trip, a hotel right on the water is the way to go.

These are the three neighborhoods in Hội An we recommend for where to stay:

  • An Hội: perfect if you want to be right in the middle of it all. The island sits across from the Old Town and is home to the night market.
  • Cẩm Châu near the river: perfect if you want a little distance from the crowds while staying close to the Old Town.
  • Cam An: perfect for combining beach days with sightseeing.

Right in the Middle of It All: Staying on An Hội

An Hội is the best place to stay if you want to be as close as possible to Hội An’s Old Town. The night market is held here every evening, so you’re truly right in the thick of things.

An Hội is a small river island directly across from the Old Town — you cross a small bridge and you’re there.

The evenings are when things really come alive. Cool bars line the waterfront, colorful lanterns hang in the streets, and you can watch small boats drift along the river. On top of that, Hội An’s night market sets up on An Hội every single evening.

An Hội is ideal for first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of the action.

Advantages of staying on An Hội:

  • As close as you can get to the Old Town
  • Plenty of restaurants and cafés on the island
  • Night market right on your doorstep

Disadvantages of staying on An Hội:

  • Very crowded, especially in the evenings
  • Less authentic than other neighborhoods

Our Hotel Recommendations for An Hội Island

On An Hội, we’re big fans of the Hoianan Boutique Hotel. The value for money is seriously fantastic. The rooms are bright and airy, and some even have a freestanding bathtub.

Away from the Hustle: Staying in Cẩm Châu

Cẩm Châu is the best place to stay if you want to skip the tourist center but still be close to the Old Town — our top pick for where to stay in Hội An.

Cẩm Châu is a large neighborhood. We recommend staying along the main river, where you’re more centrally located and can reach the Old Town quickly.

It’s noticeably quieter here than on An Hội, since it sits a bit back from the hustle. Depending on your hotel’s exact location, you’re still only five to 30 minutes on foot from the Old Town. If you want to minimize walking, book in the western part of Cẩm Châu — you’ll be just five to ten minutes away. By bike, even the eastern part takes no more than ten minutes.

You’re also between the Old Town, the rice fields, and the beach, so you can be at the water in no time on two wheels.

Cẩm Châu is perfect for first-time visitors who want a little breathing room from the crowds while staying within easy reach of everything.

Advantages of staying in Cẩm Châu:

  • Much less busy than An Hội
  • Closer to the beach and the rice fields
  • Quick bike ride to both the Old Town and the beach

Disadvantages of staying in Cẩm Châu:

  • Depending on your hotel, it can be up to a 30-minute walk to the Old Town

Our Hotel Recommendations for Cẩm Châu

We personally stayed at the Golden Soulmate Homestay and can wholeheartedly recommend it. You get an authentic stay with a Vietnamese family, while still having your own room with a private bathroom. The family is incredibly friendly and speaks excellent English — and you’re in the Old Town by bike in ten minutes.

If you’d prefer a proper hotel, check out the Little Gem Boutique Hotel. It’s a 5-star boutique hotel for under 100 euros a night, complete with a rooftop pool — perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring.

Beach Hotels: Staying in Cam An

Cam An is the neighborhood to choose if you want to relax and enjoy some real beach time during your Vietnam trip.

Cam An sits about five kilometers from Hội An’s Old Town, right on the ocean. There are two beautiful beaches here: An Bang Beach and Cua Dai Beach.

Behind the beaches you’ll find plenty of hotels, so you can stay just steps from the water. The beachfront is lined with small cafés and beach bars where you can grab snacks and drinks all day long.

By bike, you’ll need roughly 20–30 minutes to reach the Old Town.

Advantages of staying in Cam An:

  • Beach right on your doorstep
  • Quiet and relaxed atmosphere
  • Accommodation is more affordable here

Disadvantages of staying in Cam An:

  • Five kilometers from the Old Town
  • Fewer restaurant options than in the center

Our Hotel Recommendations for Cam An

The Harvest Day Hoi An is a small, family-run hotel just one to two minutes from the beach — or you can take a dip in the hotel pool if you prefer.

How long should you stay in Hội An?

Hội An isn’t a large city. One day is enough to see the main sights in the Old Town.

What makes Hội An truly special, though, is the atmosphere — the colorful lanterns, the charming historic streets, the rice fields, and the beach. That’s what makes it one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam for us. We recommend staying at least two to three days, so you can properly slow down during your Vietnam trip.

With a few days up your sleeve, you can fit in a beach day, a bike tour through the rice fields, or a day trip to the Cham Islands, My Son Sanctuary, or the Marble Mountains.

We also really recommend combining your stay with a day trip — or a few days — in Da Nang. The city has a vibe that reminds us a little of Rio de Janeiro and Miami. You can do some great sightseeing in Da Nang or simply chill out on one of its beaches.
