In a nutshell

  • We live on Fuerteventura and know every corner of the island. We’ll tell you exactly which area suits you best — and why.
  • For each area, you’ll find a detailed description and our personal hotel recommendations for every budget.
  • Our top pick is a hotel in northern Fuerteventura: the Hélène Holidays in Corralejo — beautiful boho style, right on the beach.
  • Prefer a classic beach vacation at an all-inclusive resort? The south is your answer. Our favorite there is the Innside by Meliá — modern design and right on the beach.
  • The hotel matters more to you than the location? Then check out our guide to the best hotels on Fuerteventura.

Where to Stay on Fuerteventura?

On Fuerteventura, it usually comes down to this: you either stay in the north or in the south of the island. Both sides have beautiful and popular vacation spots.

Where you book your hotel on Fuerteventura should depend on what you’re looking for from your vacation on Fuerteventura.

Our personal favorite is the north. That’s where we live, and we feel right at home!

Our tip: Check out our articles on the 17 best things to see on Fuerteventura and the 12 most beautiful places on Fuerteventura first. Mark your must-sees. That way you’ll already have a sense of where a hotel on Fuerteventura makes the most sense for you.

Here’s a quick overview of the vibe in each region:

  1. The north: more authentic and lively, but windier. With great restaurants, plenty of activities, and a landscape of volcanoes and dunes. Accommodations tend to be more unique. About 30 minutes from the airport. ➞ Hélène Holidays
  2. The south: quieter and sunnier with super long beaches. You’ll find large resort complexes, all-inclusive options, and ideal conditions for families with kids on Fuerteventura. At least an hour from the airport. ➞ Innside by Meliá
  3. The center of the island: We don’t really recommend staying here. On the east side there’s the resort town of Caleta de Fuste — not particularly pretty, but super close to the airport. The west is hilly and off the tourist trail, but well worth a visit. ➞ Barceló Mar

Before we dive into each vacation spot in the north, south, and center of the island — and share our hotel recommendations — here’s a map to get you oriented.

You can see exactly where each spot is located and easily cross-reference it with the maps of the sights, the most scenic spots, and our 10 most beautiful beaches on Fuerteventura.

The Best Vacation Spots in the North of Fuerteventura with Hotel Tips

The north of Fuerteventura is more authentic and lively than the rest of the island — but also a bit windier. This is where you’ll find the best restaurants and bars.

If you want to pack in lots of different activities on Fuerteventura, you’ll feel right at home here. Relax on the beach, hike up volcanoes, or learn to surf on Fuerteventura.

Scenically, the north is our favorite: rugged volcanic landscapes meet sweeping dunes. Places to stay here tend to be a bit more unique and are also great for self-catering. From the airport, you need about 30 minutes by car.

The best vacation spots in the north of Fuerteventura are:

  • Corralejo
  • El Cotillo
  • Lajares
  • Villaverde
  • Origo Mare (Majanicho)

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Corralejo

The beach in Corralejo on Fuerteventura
For us, Corralejo is the best place to vacation on Fuerteventura.

For us, Corralejo is by far the most beautiful town on the island. We’ve put together all our best tips and info on Corralejo in a dedicated article: our guide to Corralejo.

The town has everything you need for a vacation on a Canary Island: great swimming beaches, the famous sand dunes, and really excellent Spanish and Italian restaurants.

The town center has held on to its charm. You’ll find a good mix of tourism and authentic island life. Ferries depart from the harbor for a day trip to the island of Los Lobos or to Lanzarote.

Our Hotel Tips in Corralejo

The Hélène Holidays is our absolute favorite and, in our opinion, the best hotel in Corralejo. It sits on the edge of town, right on a sandy beach, and has a really lovely boho design.

For independent travelers, we recommend the Buendía Corralejo Nohotel. The spacious apartments are also ideal if you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel on Fuerteventura.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in El Cotillo

El Cotillo on Fuerteventura
El Cotillo is the most popular spot for surfers on Fuerteventura

A few years ago, El Cotillo was still a small, laid-back fishing village. These days there’s a lot of construction going on, and more and more visitors are discovering El Cotillo as the perfect place to stay on Fuerteventura.

El Cotillo is the surfer hotspot on Fuerteventura. Several surf schools take you out to the surrounding beaches — including La Escalera, which for us is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

In the small, charming old quarter you’ll find cool shops, really great restaurants, and every Friday a small artisan market on the town square.

In El Cotillo, you’ll typically stay in small apartment complexes or lovely boutique hotels. Large resort hotels are rare here. Corralejo is about a 25-minute drive away.

Our Hotel Tips in El Cotillo

The El Hotelito del Cotillo is our favorite. It’s one of the most affordable and most beautiful boutique hotels on Fuerteventura, with a style inspired by the riads of Marrakech.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Lajares

Lajares on Fuerteventura
Even the entire 22places team has stayed overnight in Lajares on Fuerteventura

Lajares is a quiet and relaxed vacation spot in the inland north of Fuerteventura. There are lots of small, hip cafés and boutiques — as well as Spanish restaurants.

Here you’ll find two of our best insider tips for Fuerteventura: every Saturday there’s a cool artisan market here. And just around the corner is the Calderón Hondo volcano, perfect for a sunrise hike.

Thanks to its location between Corralejo and El Cotillo (each about ten minutes by car), the town is especially popular with surfers.

It’s much quieter than the coastal towns and perfect if you’re after a house with a pool. There’s no beach here, though.

Our Hotel Tips in Lajares

We’ve personally stayed at the Surfescape Fuerteventura. It’s a great spot for digital nomads, and the standouts are the breakfast and the restaurant food — seriously delicious!

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Villaverde

The village of Villaverde on Fuerteventura
We actually live in Villaverde ourselves and love the peace and quiet and the authentic local life

Villaverde is also located inland. The town is off the tourist trail, quiet, and locally flavored. There are only a few vacation rentals and houses, mainly in the newer residential area of Castilla de Costa — which is exactly where our home is, too.

The location is still ideal: about 15 minutes to Corralejo, ten minutes to Lajares, and 20 minutes to El Cotillo. Perfect if you want a peaceful base but still want to get everywhere quickly.

Our Hotel Tips in Villaverde

Casa Cocolores is a genuine heartfelt recommendation — the owners are good friends of ours. There are modern double rooms as well as beautiful, spacious apartments.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Origo Mare (Majanicho)

Apartment at Vista Paraiso on Fuerteventura
The Vista Paraiso in Majanicho is an absolute dream for anyone seeking peace and quiet (© Vista Paraiso)

From Lajares, a road leads all the way to the northern tip of the island and the tiny fishing village of Majanicho. There’s almost no lodging right in the village, but there are some options slightly above the coast in the small settlement of Origo Mare.

A handful of individual houses stand in the middle of nowhere. Mostly locals live here, but some houses are rented out as vacation accommodations — often with ocean views, a shared pool, and a playground.

Lajares is about seven minutes away, and Corralejo and El Cotillo are each around 20 minutes. There’s no tourist infrastructure on-site — but you’ll find everything you need, nice and easy, in Lajares.

Our Hotel Tips in Origo Mare (Majanicho)

In Majanicho you’ll find the Vista Paraiso, a stunning studio right by the sea. The location is ideal if you’re looking for real peace and quiet, and the value for money is seriously great.

Our other picks are in the Origo Mare settlement.

The Best Vacation Spots in the South of Fuerteventura with Hotel Tips

The south of Fuerteventura is quieter and sunnier than the north — and it’s home to many of the island’s most beautiful beaches. They’re endlessly long, wide open, and simply stunning.

The tourist infrastructure is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to worry about a thing. You’ll mainly find large resort complexes with great all-inclusive options — and it’s also perfect for families.

The south isn’t quite as action-packed, but some of the coolest boat tours on Fuerteventura depart from here too. Another highlight is the Jandía Natural Park. From the airport, you’re looking at at least an hour’s drive.

Good to know: In the south of Fuerteventura, the question is less about which town to stay in and more about which hotel. The area consists largely of resort developments with large hotel and apartment complexes, many of which sit between the individual towns.

To help you get your bearings, we’ll give you a brief intro to the most important towns — but above all, we’ll show you our favorite hotels and which one suits you best.

Short on time? Here are our top three hotels in the south of Fuerteventura:

Innside by Meliá Fuerteventura

Iberostar Waves Gaviotas Park

The best vacation spots in the south of Fuerteventura are:

  • Costa Calma
  • Morro Jable
  • Jandía Playa

Accommodation and Hotel Tips at Costa Calma

Costa Calma on Fuerteventura
For many people, Costa Calma is the best vacation spot on Fuerteventura

Playa Costa Calma is long, wide, and ranks among Fuerteventura’s most beautiful beaches for us — making Costa Calma one of the most popular places to stay on the island.

Costa Calma is especially popular with European vacationers. You’ll find plenty of apartments and all-inclusive hotels, along with restaurants and bars that cater heavily to international guests.

Costa Calma is a pure tourist resort, and even without a traditional town center, you won’t be missing anything essential. It’s a great fit for older travelers or families whose main plan is to relax.

Very close to Costa Calma is Oasis Park, which is a real highlight for kids. The beaches Playa Barca and Sotavento Beach are also fantastic.

Our Hotel Tips at Costa Calma

The Innside by Meliá Fuerteventura is our absolute favorite in the south. It’s one of the 11 most beautiful beachfront hotels on Fuerteventura and has a hip, modern design.

More affordable, but also right on the beach, are the R2 Maryvent Beach Apartments. They’re ideal for independent travelers and offer excellent value for money.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Morro Jable

Morro Jable on Fuerteventura
Morro Jable is the southernmost town in the south of Fuerteventura

Morro Jable is the southernmost town on Fuerteventura. The former harbor town has grown into one of the most popular vacation spots on the island.

The beach is super long and an absolute dream. In the small town center you’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafés serving Spanish and international cuisine. The promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

In Morro Jable, you’ll typically stay in a large resort complex, with great entertainment programs and all-inclusive options. But there are also some nice apartment complexes and individual hotels.

Our Hotel Tips for Morro Jable

The Hotel Riu Palace Jandia is one of the best 5-star hotels on Fuerteventura. It has a great spa area and every room has an ocean view.

For a more budget-friendly stay on Fuerteventura, check out the AltaVista Apartahotel. The highlight is the rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi and a stunning view of the ocean.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips at Playa Jandia

Playa del Matorral on Fuerteventura
Playa del Matorral, also known as Playa Jandia, goes on forever

If you follow the promenade from Morro Jable heading north, you’ll reach the resort area of Playa Jandia. It flows seamlessly into Morro Jable and makes up the even more touristy part of the south.

This is where the really big resort hotels are, and the beachfront promenade is lined with plenty of shops. This area is colloquially called Jandía — even though that name actually refers to the entire southern peninsula.

Further along the coast heading north, more resort-only areas — like Las Gaviotas or Esquinzo — line up one after another, consisting almost entirely of hotel and apartment complexes.

The endlessly long beach connects all the towns and is simply breathtaking. This region is ideal for beach lovers, families, and those who want a fully catered vacation. You’ll need to drive a bit to reach restaurants, so we’d suggest going all-inclusive.

Our Hotel Tips at Playa Jandia

The Iberostar Waves Gaviotas Park has a truly exceptional all-inclusive offering. This hotel on Fuerteventura is equally ideal for families and couples.

One of the best adults-only hotels on Fuerteventura is the Royal Palm Resort & Spa. The standout feature is the roughly 2,000-square-meter spa area.

The Best Vacation Spots in the Center of Fuerteventura with Hotel Tips

At roughly 100 kilometers from north to south, Fuerteventura has a vast central region. For your hotel on Fuerteventura, however, we don’t recommend this area.

Don’t get us wrong — the center of the island is beautiful, and some of Fuerteventura’s most impressive highlights are here.

The west, however, has absolutely no tourist infrastructure, and in the east there’s only the capital Puerto del Rosario and the resort town of Caleta de Fuste.

We’re not particularly fond of the town, though. The one advantage: from the airport you’re only 10 minutes away by car. Since some people are specifically looking for that, we’ll go ahead and introduce you to Caleta de Fuste anyway.

Accommodation and Hotel Tips in Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste on Fuerteventura
Caleta de Fuste is a very typical resort town on Fuerteventura

Caleta de Fuste is a classic vacation resort with a calm swimming bay, well-maintained green spaces, and plenty of leisure activities. On top of that, the tourist infrastructure is excellent, with international and local restaurants, bars, and cafés.

For many travelers — especially from the UK — Caleta de Fuste is the ideal place to stay on Fuerteventura. Personally, though, we find the town less visually appealing.

A lot of it feels heavily touristy and lacks authenticity, and the restaurants are geared more toward vacationers. On the plus side, many hotels are centrally located, which makes them particularly well-suited for families.

General Tips for Booking Accommodation on Fuerteventura

To help you plan your vacation as smoothly as possible, here are a few pointers for booking your Fuerteventura accommodation.

Book Flight and Hotel Separately or Together?

In our experience, booking flight and hotel separately is cheaper in most cases. That said, booking everything together means you don’t have to worry about a thing — you get an all-in-one bundle with flight, accommodation, and meals, and you’re transferred from the airport to your hotel. Both options have their pros and cons.

Tips for Booking Flight and Hotel for Fuerteventura Separately

We almost always book our trips separately, and we recommend following this order: Start by finding the best flight. For that, we think the flight search engine Skyscanner works best.

Search for flights on Skyscanner

Then use our Fuerteventura hotel tips to choose the right accommodation for your vacation. We always book our accommodation on Booking.com.

Browse all hotels on Fuerteventura on Booking.com

After that, we recommend looking into a rental car. It’s the easiest way to explore the sights on Fuerteventura — many of them simply can’t be reached by bus.

Alternative to a Hotel: Vacation Rentals on Fuerteventura

On Fuerteventura, in addition to hotels, there’s also a great selection of vacation homes and rental properties.

With vacation rentals, you often get significantly more space and privacy than in a hotel — for the same price or less.

The trade-off is that you have to handle your own meals from breakfast to dinner, and usually nobody comes by to clean or change the towels.
