The Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Cologne

If it’s your first time in Cologne, the sheer number of hotels can be seriously overwhelming. And of course the question comes up: which neighborhood is the best base for you?

Good thing you’ve got us! We’ll walk you through which areas work best for a trip to Cologne and share our top hotel picks for every type of traveler.

In our opinion, these are the best neighborhoods to stay in Cologne:

  • Alter Markt/Altstadt-Nord: Perfect if you want to be right in the heart of the city, surrounded by most of Cologne’s top attractions.
  • Altstadt-Süd: True old-town vibes! Quieter than Altstadt-Nord, yet the sights are still easily walkable.
  • Belgian Quarter: Great for mixing with locals. You’ll find cool bars and cafés, record stores, and street art.
  • Deutz: From the right bank of the Rhine you get a great view of the cathedral and can stroll across the Hohenzollern Bridge on your way into the city center.

For First-Time Visitors

Staying near Alter Markt

A hotel near Alter Markt is right for you if you want to dive straight into the action and stay close to Cologne’s most famous sights.

The area around Alter Markt is a small part of Altstadt-Nord and is just a stone’s throw from the main train station and the cathedral.

For a first visit to Cologne, this area is ideal. Even as you get your bearings, you’ll naturally stumble upon nearby Cologne highlights. City tours of the top sights also kick off close by — you can find all the details in our article about city tours in Cologne.

Around the historic square, you’ll find plenty of small and large hotels tucked between museums, traditional brewpubs, and shopping. A few are even right on the Rhine.

Advantages of staying near Alter Markt:

  • Walking distance from the main train station
  • Many sights right on your doorstep
  • Lots of restaurants and shopping options
  • Right on the Rhine riverbank

Disadvantages of staying near Alter Markt:

  • Very touristy
  • Lots of cobblestone streets

Central but Quieter

Staying in Altstadt-Süd

We recommend a hotel in Altstadt-Süd if you like being centrally located but still want some peace and quiet.

Altstadt-Süd borders the Alter Markt area to the south. The hotels here have a wonderfully historic charm, and more upscale places to stay are actually cheaper here than in other parts of the city.

The big advantage of Altstadt-Süd is that you get pretty much all the benefits of Alter Markt while still enjoying a nice, quiet stay. Win-win.

You can take a leisurely stroll through the alleyways and along the Rhine, and the Rheinauhafen with its crane houses and the Chocolate Museum isn’t far away either.

Advantages of staying in Altstadt-Süd:

  • Less touristy
  • Lots of restaurants and pubs
  • Among locals
  • Rheinauhafen

Disadvantages of staying in Altstadt-Süd:

  • Not within walking distance of the main train station

Staying in the Belgian Quarter

A hotel in the Belgian Quarter is the perfect choice if you like things a little different, more creative, and more colorful.

The Belgian Quarter has been hugely popular with locals for several years now. Art lovers and music fans feel right at home here.

There’s cool street art, tons of great bars and cafés, and the occasional record store. This is where you get the authentic urban vibe of a big city.

Not far from the Belgian Quarter is the Hohenzollernring. Here you can turn night into day or sit at a sidewalk café and watch seriously flashy cars cruise “the Ringe.” Genuinely entertaining.

That said, there are only a few hotels in the Belgian Quarter itself. If everything there is full, you’ll definitely find something around the Hohenzollernring.

Advantages of staying around the Belgian Quarter:

  • Among locals
  • Trendy neighborhood
  • Lots of bars and restaurants
  • Hip urban vibe

Disadvantages of staying around the Belgian Quarter:

  • Not within walking distance of the main train station
  • Around the Hohenzollernring it can get loud on weekends — there’s a lot going on here after dark

Right Bank of the Rhine

Staying in Deutz

A hotel in Cologne’s Deutz neighborhood is worth it if you don’t mind staying a bit outside the city center and want to discover Cologne beyond the downtown area.

From the perspective of a “true Cologne local,” Deutz is on the wrong side of the Rhine — the “Schäl Sick.” Why that is, nobody really knows. The fact is: it’s just as lovely as the left bank of the Rhine.

In Deutz you’ll find the Lommerzheim, the “most Cologne of all Kölsch pubs,” and at the Hotel Hyatt, right on the Rhine, you’ll have the best view of the cathedral across the water.

Another great thing here is that the neighborhood is excellently connected thanks to the Cologne Messe/Deutz train station. You can arrive easily by train and get around quickly from there.

Off the usual tourist trail, Deutz is also home to one of our Cologne insider tips.

Advantages of staying in Deutz:

  • Views of the Rhine and the cathedral
  • Mostly affordable rooms
  • Well connected

Disadvantages of staying in Deutz:

  • Barely any old-town atmosphere

Practical Tips for Staying in Cologne

Cultural Promotion Levy in Cologne

The city of Cologne charges a so-called Kulturförderabgabe (cultural promotion levy) of five percent. This is essentially a tourism tax, calculated on top of the accommodation price.

For online bookings, the levy is usually included in the price. To avoid any surprises, check when booking whether the levy (often listed simply as a tourism tax) is already factored in. On Booking.com you can see this in the fine print on the left.

Booking a Hotel During Cologne Carnival

During carnival season, Cologne’s 200-plus hotels are often completely booked up. So if you’re looking for a place to stay in Cologne between Weiberfastnacht (Women’s Carnival Thursday) and Shrove Tuesday, there’s only one thing to do: Book early!

Booking ahead may also save you a few dollars, since hotel prices tend to go up around Rose Monday.

If you can’t find a room in Cologne itself, you can of course also search in the surrounding area. There are lodging options in every direction around the city — for example to the south in Troisdorf and Siegburg, or to the west in Frechen.

Das Kronprinz: Our favorite hotel in Troisdorf! A 3-star hotel close to the S-Bahn into Cologne’s city center, with spacious rooms and an incredibly good breakfast!

Kranz Parkhotel: Our favorite hotel in Siegburg! A 4-star hotel with a welcoming atmosphere and easy public transportation connections to Cologne.

Hotel Frechener Hof: Our favorite hotel in Frechen! A 4-star hotel with a great location. You’ll have a peaceful stay here and still be in Cologne in no time.

From personal experience, Cologne’s S-Bahn network runs wonderfully during carnival. Getting to the surrounding towns is no problem at all — and you certainly won’t be the only one making that journey during the festivities.
