This 5-star hotel is a former university and oozes character and charm — and worth knowing: hotels in historic buildings are genuinely rare in New Zealand.
The attention to detail throughout is seriously impressive. Colorful velvet meets rustic wood elements, and stone walls are paired with soft pastel tones.
And there’s one more special feature! The hotel has two so-called Skylight Rooms that let in an exceptional amount of natural light. During the day you can see the blue skies over Christchurch, and at night you can count the stars.
Sudima City Hotel
Looking for a modern place to stay in Christchurch with seriously great extra perks? Then the Sudima Hotel is a fantastic option.
This 5-star boutique hotel sits on Victoria Street, right in the heart of Christchurch. You’ll be surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and plenty of great options for going out.
But once you’re inside, you won’t notice any of the street buzz at all. That’s a real plus — it means you can fully enjoy everything the hotel has to offer.
Beyond the modern, stylish rooms and on-site restaurant, the Sudima also has a superb spa area. After a day of exploring, you can unwind with a bamboo massage. Honestly, that alone sold us.
Christchurch City Hotel
Another solid pick for Christchurch accommodation in the center is the Christchurch City Hotel.
It’s right in the city core and makes a perfect base for sightseeing. The Bridge of Remembrance, the Christchurch Tram, and the Canterbury Museum are all within a ten-minute walk.
The rooms are kept fairly simple, but the large windows more than make up for it with a really beautiful view of the city.
You’ll get great value for money here year-round. And because it’s a comparatively large hotel, you can almost always find an affordable room — even on weekends.
Orari Boutique Hotel
While most of the best hotels in Christchurch occupy fairly typical buildings, the Orari Boutique Hotel is truly one of a kind.
The building dates back to 1893 and is a protected landmark. In a sense, you’re sleeping in a piece of the city’s history. How cool is that?
Even from the outside, you can tell how unique the Orari is. Blue facades, a charming veranda, and loads of ornate detailing. It almost reminds us of the Winchester House in San José, California.
And the rooms inside are decorated with such care and warmth that you feel like you’re walking into a lived-in family home.
The value for money is excellent, too. There are ten rooms available, and a delicious breakfast is always included.
Staying in Riccarton
Parkview on Hagley
Parkview On Hagley is a 4-star hotel right on the expansive Hagley Park in the Riccarton neighborhood. Its location makes it noticeably quieter than staying in the city center.
That said, you’re still very well connected. You can either hop on public transit or simply stroll 30 minutes through the lovely Hagley Park to reach the inner city.
The rooms are simply furnished but very spacious. Most even have a balcony with park views — a really nice touch.
Breakfast offers a small but fresh continental spread. All in all, Parkview On Hagley gives you everything you need at a really fair price.
Chateau on the Park
Chateau on the Park on Hagley Park is part of Hilton’s DoubleTree brand, so you can count on the usual high Hilton standards.
Alongside a fitness center, there’s a heated outdoor pool and an on-site restaurant with garden views. That means you can add breakfast to your stay and book dinner right on-site — super convenient.
The rooms don’t look particularly typical of Hilton at first glance, but they deliver everything you need for a comfortable stay.
The overall concept just works. Affordable luxury that doesn’t feel overdone.
Staying in Sumner
Cave Rock Guest House
Finding a truly great place to stay near the beach in Christchurch can be tricky. But we can wholeheartedly recommend the Cave Rock Guesthouse.
The property sits at Sumner Beach Park and offers three rooms of varying sizes with excellent value for money.
Every room comes with a kitchenette and cooking equipment. Since there’s no breakfast service at the guesthouse, it’s easy to sort your own meals — no problem at all.
The beach is just a two-minute walk away, and you can already see and hear the ocean from the property. Seriously, it doesn’t get much better than that for a beach stay near Christchurch.
