Where to Stay in Canggu?
Canggu is one of the best areas to stay on Bali. There are 3 neighborhoods we especially recommend for your hotel in Canggu:
- Batu Bolong: Ideal for first-time visitors who want to be centrally located and right in the middle of the typical Canggu lifestyle ➞ Lila Loka Homestay
- Pererenan: Perfect if you’re looking for a quieter area on your Bali trip or if you’re a digital nomad ➞ Premadhan Cottage Canggu
- Berawa: The multicultural neighborhood, with luxury hotels, beach clubs, and local street food markets ➞ Kalm Bali
The 3 Neighborhoods for Staying in Canggu on a Map
For orientation, we’ve marked the 3 neighborhoods on a map. This gives you a perfect overview.

Important note: On the map, everything looks relatively close together. In theory it is, but in practice there are only a few connecting roads between the neighborhoods.
So if you want to get anywhere, you’ll often have to take longer detours. This has two consequences:
- It takes you significantly longer to get from A to B. For example, if you want to go from Tribal Coworking in Pererenan to Old Man’s (one of the party spots in Canggu), it takes about 10 minutes without traffic.
- Traffic. Traffic is just part of life in Canggu, especially in the evenings just before sunset or during the best time to visit Bali. That same route can easily take 20 minutes then. (The same goes for the road from Batu Bolong to the beach clubs in Berawa.)
A Hotel in Canggu's Most Central Neighborhood, Batu Bolong

A hotel in Batu Bolong is ideal for you if you want to experience the real, modern Canggu with all its energy, surfer lifestyle, and nightlife. It’s loud, vibrant, and full of life.
If it’s your first time in Canggu and you only have a short amount of time on your road trip through Bali, you should stay in Batu Bolong. It’s the most central neighborhood in Canggu.
In Batu Bolong you’ll find pretty much everything Canggu stands for: modern restaurants, laid-back bars, spas, countless shopping options, and surf schools — if you want to learn to surf, one of the coolest activities on Bali.
It’s the neighborhood for people who want to be right in the thick of things. There’s always something going on and it can get noisy. On the flip side, you’re about 15 minutes by scooter from each of the other two neighborhoods.
You’ll find all types of accommodation: cool social hostels, nice and affordable homestays, as well as very stylish boutique hotels.
Pros of a hotel in Batu Bolong
- Largest selection of restaurants, cafés, and shops
- You can reach everything on foot
- Surfer’s paradise: direct access to the best beginner waves at Old Man’s
- The best nightlife
Cons of a hotel in Batu Bolong
- Often noisy in the center due to bars and construction
- Frequent traffic jams on the main roads
- Hotels are packed in tightly, often with less private garden space
Our Hotel Recommendations for Batu Bolong
Top pick: We stayed at the Lila Loka Homestay in Batu Bolong for several weeks. The place is set a little away from the central hustle and bustle — it’s a 5-minute ride to the beach. In return, it’s a bit quieter, and the rooms and pool area are beautiful.

A Hotel in Canggu's Quietest Neighborhood, Pererenan

A hotel in Pererenan is perfect for you if you’re looking for a bit more peace and quiet but still want to be able to get to the center of Canggu quickly. The neighborhood is also very popular with digital nomads.
Are you looking for an area in Canggu that’s a bit quieter or great for coworking? Then we recommend booking accommodation in the Pererenan neighborhood.
Pererenan is noticeably less busy than Batu Bolong, but you’ll still find plenty of great restaurants and cool cafés as well as small, charming boutiques.
Depending on where your hotel is located, you can be at the beach in just a few minutes on foot (even if the beach in Canggu isn’t among the most beautiful beaches on Bali). There are no surf schools here, though. Instead, you’ll find simple beach bars still run by locals and significantly more affordable.
There’s also a nice, modern selection of accommodations for every budget.
Pros of a hotel in Pererenan:
- Much less noise — some hotels still overlook real rice fields
- Streets are wider and hotels are often more spread out
- Lots of great restaurants and cafés within walking distance
Cons of a hotel in Pererenan:
- To get to the center, you need to ride (or be driven on) a scooter
- Barely any nightlife
- Some construction sites
Our Hotel Recommendations for Pererenan
If you’re looking for a really great spot as a digital nomad in Canggu like we were, we highly recommend Tribal Coworking. We didn’t stay there ourselves, but we worked there every day — and absolutely loved it!
We stayed in Pererenan at The R Apartments Pererenan. The location is perfect, surrounded by many restaurants, and it’s just a 5-minute walk to the beach. Highly recommended.

A Hotel in Canggu's Multicultural Neighborhood, Berawa

A hotel in Berawa is ideal for you if you’re looking for a versatile mix of upscale beach clubs, an international food scene, and local street food culture.
Berawa is quite different from Batu Bolong and Pererenan. It’s the youngest neighborhood of the three from a tourism perspective — and that’s exactly why you’ll find an interesting mix here.
On one hand, Berawa has super modern buildings with exclusive cafés, restaurants, and shops. On the other hand, it’s the only neighborhood with a local street food market.
Berawa is really up and coming, though a lot of construction is still going on. The neighborhood’s main draw is its two large beach clubs, Finns and Atlas. These attract mostly the more exclusive crowd of vacationers.
The accommodations here come with a slightly higher price-to-value ratio, but they tend to be even more modern and stylish. You’ll also find the least crowded stretch of beach in Canggu here.
Pros of a hotel in Berawa:
- Really great cafés and restaurants plus a local street food market
- For many, these are some of the best beach clubs in the world
- Very luxurious and modern accommodations
- The beach here is often less crowded than the others
Cons of a hotel in Berawa
- Hotel and restaurant prices are higher
- Very exclusive vibe (which isn’t really our thing)
- Also often congested
- Lots of construction sites

From here, you can truly reach everything important in Canggu on foot.
Is it better to stay in Seminyak or Canggu?
It all depends on what you’re looking for in your vacation:
Stay in Seminyak if:
You value structure and comfort. The sidewalks are wider, the infrastructure is more developed, and everything feels a bit more polished and put-together. Ideal for high-end shopping, upscale dining, and a relaxed beach vacation at luxurious resorts.
Stay in Canggu if:
You’re after vibes and community. It’s more chaotic, but also more lively. This is where you’ll find the highest concentration of trendy cafés, digital nomads, and surfers. Canggu is less polished, but more creative — and the absolute hotspot for socializing and keeping up with what’s happening on Bali right now.
Is it better to stay in Kuta or Canggu?
It all depends on what you’re looking for.
Stay in Kuta if:
You’re a budget traveler or you love having everything close by. Kuta is practical: hotels are significantly cheaper, there are huge shopping malls, and the beach is flat, light-sand, and perfect for complete surf beginners. It’s touristy mainstream — loud, full of souvenir shops and fast-food chains, but very convenient since it’s close to the airport.
Stay in Canggu if:
You want to experience the current hype. Canggu has long since replaced Kuta as the trendy hub. Here you’ll find the aesthetic you know from social media: design cafés, beach clubs, and a creative community of digital nomads. It’s pricier and the traffic is often chaotic, but the quality of the dining scene and the overall vacation vibe are more modern and upscale.
