In a nutshell

  • Auckland is by far the largest city in New Zealand and a popular starting and ending point for a New Zealand road trip.
  • If it’s your first time in Auckland and you want to see the main attractions, your best bet is a hotel in the CBD (Central Business District). Our top pick: Imagine Beach Road.
  • For a stylish, characterful neighborhood, we recommend Ponsonby. Our top pick: Hotel Fitzroy.
  • Even better if you love nature: Waiheke Island, just a short ferry ride from Auckland. Our top pick: Kiwi House Waiheke.
  • Skipping the city entirely? Spend a night near the airport and head straight to your road trip. Our top pick: Manha Hotel Auckland.

Staying in the CBD

Skytower Auckland
The CBD is the city’s center and where you’ll find most of Auckland’s hotels

The CBD is your best bet if it’s your first time in Auckland and you want to hit the city’s top attractions.

The CBD is the heart of the city, and from here you can reach almost all of the things to see in Auckland on foot. If you’re only here for a short sightseeing trip, the CBD is definitely the best place to stay.

Top highlights in the CBD include the Sky Tower, Queen Street, and the Viaduct Harbour. Ferries to Rangitoto and Waiheke Island also depart from here.

The CBD is also well connected by bus, and express buses run to the airport.

If you want to go out at night, the CBD is the right call too — you’ll have a wide selection of bars to choose from.

Advantages of staying in the CBD:

  • Close to all the major attractions
  • Lots of restaurants and bars nearby
  • Wide selection of hotels in all price ranges
  • Well connected by bus, including to the airport

Disadvantages of staying in the CBD:

  • Busy and touristy neighborhood
  • Not the most attractive area

Our Hotel Recommendations for the CBD

The Imagine Beach Road is a modern hotel with unbeatable value for money for Auckland. The most important attractions are within walking distance, the amenities are excellent, and many rooms have great views.

A top-notch modern hostel near the Sky Tower is LyLo Auckland. It offers affordable double rooms and dorm beds in the form of pods — so you still get plenty of privacy.

Staying in Ponsonby

Ponsonby Auckland
Ponsonby is, in our opinion, the most beautiful neighborhood in Auckland

Ponsonby is perfect if you want a beautiful setting with chic boutiques, great restaurants, and a lively bar scene.

If you want to stay in a truly beautiful part of Auckland, Ponsonby is our top pick. The area sits at a higher elevation, so from many corners you get a fantastic view of the skyline.

Ponsonby is centered around a main street lined with excellent restaurants, cozy bars, and lovely boutiques. The houses look really elegant too — it’s just a genuinely nice place to wander around.

The city center with the main highlights like the Sky Tower is about two kilometers away — an easy walk or a quick bus ride.

The hotel selection is smaller than in the CBD, and you’ll mostly find more upscale accommodation and apartments here.

Advantages of staying in Ponsonby:

  • Beautiful area to base yourself
  • Short distance to Auckland’s city center
  • Lots of restaurants and boutiques

Disadvantages of staying in Ponsonby:

  • Limited hotel selection
  • Higher prices
  • Not right next to the main attractions

Our Hotel Recommendations for Ponsonby

The Quest on Beaumont is a lovely hotel with great value for money. It’s not directly in Ponsonby, but the location is fantastic — you’re right between Ponsonby and the CBD, so you get the best of both worlds.

For a luxury stay right in the heart of Ponsonby, check out Hotel Fitzroy. Amazing breakfast, stylish rooms, and outstanding service.

On the Beach

Staying on Waiheke Island

Waiheke Islands
Waiheke Island is known for its wine production and relaxed island vibe

Waiheke Island is ideal if you’d rather be surrounded by nature on an island than in the city — and if you enjoy good wine.

Not in the mood for a big city and classic sightseeing? Then staying on Waiheke Island might be your best move. Ferries from the harbor in Auckland’s CBD get you there in under an hour.

On Waiheke you can stroll along the beach, enjoy wine (there’s a serious amount of viticulture here), and soak up the peace and quiet. The accommodation options are excellent, and the island still doesn’t feel overcrowded.

Advantages of staying on Waiheke Island:

  • Peaceful surroundings and stunning nature
  • Perfect for a beach vacation
  • Good range of accommodations across all price points

Disadvantages of staying on Waiheke Island:

  • You need to take a ferry to get to Auckland
  • Limited restaurant options
  • Not a great base for sightseeing

Our Hotel Recommendations for Waiheke Island

We really love the Kiwi House Waiheke. Many rooms have ocean views, the surroundings are peaceful, and you’re still just a short walk from the center of Waiheke.

For an even more spectacular vista, check out Cable Bay Views. You look out directly over vineyards and the ocean from beautifully appointed studios.

Staying near Auckland Airport

Auckland Airport
Auckland Airport serves many international flights

A hotel near the airport makes the most sense if you have an early or late flight and don’t need to explore the city.

If you’re arriving in Auckland or flying out as part of a road trip through New Zealand, staying near the airport is a smart, stress-free choice.

This is especially true if Auckland itself isn’t a priority and you’d rather get straight to your next destination.

Our Hotel Recommendations for Auckland Airport

Right at the airport, you’ll find two solid upscale options: the Novotel Auckland Airport and the Pullman Auckland Airport. The most budget-friendly pick is the ibis Budget Auckland Airport.

For great value near the airport, the Manha Hotel Auckland Airport is an excellent choice.
