Historical Museums in Vienna
If you’re a history buff, Vienna is basically paradise. The city has some seriously impressive museums covering everything from ancient Rome to imperial grandeur.
Natural History Museum Vienna

What do you need to know? The Natural History Museum is all about the origins of the Earth. The star of the show is the dinosaur hall, with three massive skeletons that genuinely impress. You can also try hands-on experiments and catch a show at the digital planetarium. Tickets are available in advance online.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. It’s super engaging, and if you’re visiting Vienna with kids, this is probably the single best museum on the list.
Our tip: You can actually spend the night at the Natural History Museum — planetarium show, gala dinner, flashlight tour, and champagne on the rooftop terrace with views over Vienna. At 200 euros per person it’s a splurge, but it’s a genuinely unforgettable experience.
Roman Museum

What do you need to know? Vienna was once part of the Roman Empire, known back then as Vindobona. The Roman Museum digs into that ancient history — literally. For kids, there are age-appropriate animated films and a Playmobil replica of the city.
Is it worth it? It’s a great pick if you’re into history. Walking through the excavation site, you can’t help but feel a little like Indiana Jones.
Our tip: Grab your ticket for the Roman Museum online in advance to skip any wait.
Hofburg Vienna

What do you need to know? The Hofburg was home to the Habsburg emperors until 1918, and it’s the perfect backdrop for a deep dive into the lives of Sisi and Franz Joseph. You’ll walk through the Imperial Apartments and explore the Imperial Silver Collection.
Is it worth it? Definitely! The museum challenges quite a few of the romantic myths the Romy Schneider films created — and that’s what makes it so compelling.
Our tip: We found the Imperial Silver Collection a bit less exciting than the rest. But if you want the full picture of imperial life, it’s worth including.

Sigmund Freud Museum

What do you need to know? Sigmund Freud lived for 47 years in an apartment building in Vienna that’s now a museum. It’s still furnished much as the Freud family left it when they fled the Nazis. For younger visitors, there are audio guides featuring poems.
Is it worth it? It’s genuinely fascinating to learn about psychoanalysis and the Freud family’s life here. That said, there are fewer original pieces of furniture than we expected — the family took most of them to London.
Our tip: If you’re a Freud enthusiast, we’d also recommend a guided city tour of Vienna that follows in his footsteps through the city — and ends right at the museum.

Is it worth it? Totally — especially if you love unconventional, rule-breaking art. This one’s a real standout among Vienna’s museums.
Our tip: The Kunst Haus also runs Photo Walks where you explore a specific neighborhood with a professional photographer. A fun way to combine sightseeing with a new skill.

Haus der Musik
What do you need to know? The Haus der Musik is probably the best-known music museum in Vienna — and it’s totally interactive. You can compose your own waltz by rolling dice, and on the first floor you can explore the founding site of the Vienna Philharmonic.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. With so many hands-on activities, you genuinely won’t get bored — and it works just as well for adults as it does for kids.
Our tip: The Haus der Musik also hosts live concerts — from modern music to classical performances to interactive children’s concerts. Check the program before you go and see if anything lines up with your visit.

Mozarthaus Vienna

What do you need to know? The Mozarthaus apartment is the only one still preserved in Vienna where Mozart actually lived. Pictures, videos, and historical documents guide you through the rooms where he spent two and a half years of his life.
Is it worth it? It’s a genuinely interesting visit — you get a real sense of how Mozart and his family lived. One caveat: like the Sigmund Freud Museum, there aren’t many original objects on display, so go in with the right expectations.

Haydnhaus

What do you need to know? Joseph Haydn spent the final years of his life in this house. The museum explores his music, lifestyle, and later years, with stories about Haydn shared by famous contemporaries displayed on the walls.
Is it worth it? Definitely — and unlike some of the other composer museums in Vienna, this one actually has original objects you can look at up close.
Technology Museums in Vienna
More into technology than art? These technical museums in Vienna are where you’ll want to spend your time.
Technical Museum Vienna

What do you need to know? The Technical Museum houses a huge collection of historical objects and cutting-edge technologies. For many of the exhibits, you can try things out yourself through hands-on experiments — it’s not just a look-don’t-touch situation.
Is it worth it? If you love getting hands-on and experimenting, this is your place. It’s one of the best museums in Vienna for curious minds of all ages.
Our tip: Swing by after dark too. Every evening for about four hours, the museum’s façade is lit up with stunning projections. Really impressive and completely free to watch from outside.

Clock Museum

What do you need to know? The Clock Museum has over 700 different clocks — and they’re all still running. Some date back to the Middle Ages, which makes keeping them ticking quite an achievement. Every hour on the hour, all of them strike at once. It’s a seriously cool moment.
Is it worth it? You won’t find a museum like this in every city. If you’re after something genuinely unique among Vienna’s attractions, this one delivers.

Furniture Museum Vienna

What do you need to know? Yes, it really is all about furniture — but in the best possible way. The Furniture Museum holds one of the most significant furniture collections in the world, originally belonging to Maria Theresia, so it tells you a lot about imperial family life too.
Is it worth it? It’s not an essential stop, but if you’ve already worked through the other top museums in Vienna and want something fresh, it’s a genuinely interesting option.
Our tip: Don’t miss the film sets featuring original furniture from the Sissi films with Romy Schneider — a fun connection to the Hofburg visit.
Save Money with the Bundesmuseen-Card
Planning to visit several museums in Vienna? Then the Bundesmuseen-Card is worth a close look. With the card, you can visit a total of eight museums for 66 euros.
The card divides Vienna’s museums into eight groups. Within each group, you pick one museum to visit.
It’s pricier than museum passes in other cities, but it can pay off from as few as four visits — as long as you choose the most expensive museum in most groups. From five museums onward, it’s a solid investment even if you mix in a few of the more affordable options.
The card is valid for one year in total. You can pick it up at any of the Bundesmuseen locations or buy it online.
