The most important info about the entry fee in Venice

Admission to Venice has cost 10 euros since April 18, 2025 and applies only to day visitors. It works like a day ticket.

If you arrive in Venice in the morning and leave the same evening, you’ll need to pay the fee.

If you stay overnight in a hotel in Venice, you don’t have to pay the Venice Ticket, since you’re already paying the tourist tax. However, you still need to register on the city’s official portal and request a free QR code.

By the way: even if your hotel is outside the old town, such as on Lido, you’re still exempt from the entry fee when visiting the old town.

Why you need to pay the Venice tourist fee

The entry fee was introduced because Venice is particularly fragile. As a city built on water, it’s much harder to maintain than other cities.

Thousands of day visitors used to come mostly on weekends, just strolling past the main sights in Venice.

Many didn’t spend money in the city but still created waste and caused wear and tear.

The Venice Ticket is meant to both reduce the number of day tourists and help fund the high maintenance costs.

Interestingly, the city doesn’t like the term “entry fee” and prefers to call it a “contribution“.

When does the Venice entry fee apply?

The Venice Ticket is only required during the main tourist season in Venice, from April to July.

It applies on public holidays and bridge days—the times when the city gets the most visitors.

You’ll need to pay the Venice tourist fee on the following days in 2025:

April: 18 to 31
May: 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31
June: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29
July: 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27

On these days, you’re required to buy your ticket between 8:30 am and 4 pm.

Outside of those dates, you don’t need to pay the Venice access fee for a short visit.

Where to pay the Venice access fee?

You can pay the 10-euro Venice entry fee on the official city website.

There’s no limit on the number of tickets, so you can buy it last minute. But if you book the Venice tourist fee up to four days in advance, you only pay 5 euros.

Payment options include credit card and PayPal.

You’ll receive a QR code by email, which you may be asked to show during spot checks. Save it to your phone.

Note: There are no gates or checkpoints at the city entrance. Instead, ticket inspectors carry out random checks inside Venice.

You can also register and pay in cash at tobacco shops, such as at the Venice train station. You’ll receive a printed QR code there.

If you’re caught without a valid QR code, you could be fined between 50 and 300 euros.

Who has to pay the Venice tourist fee?

Day visitors aged 14 and over must pay the Venice entry fee if they arrive between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

So, if you’re only heading into Venice for dinner or the evening, you don’t need to pay.

Who doesn’t need to pay the Venice access fee?

If you belong to one of the groups below, you’re exempt from paying the Venice access fee:

Overnight guests
Children under 14
Those going straight to the outer islands like Murano, Burano, or Lido without passing through the old town
People with disabilities and their caregivers
School groups
Anyone visiting friends or family in Venice

Please note: Even if you’re exempt, you still need to register on the city’s website. Click “Exceptions,” choose your category, and you’ll get your free QR code. If you’re visiting Venice with children under 14, you must request a QR code for them too.

Cannaregio — If you’re staying overnight in Venice, there’s no entry fee—but registration is still required.

Which areas are covered by the Venice entry fee?

The Venice day ticket covers the entire historic center, including the island of Giudecca.

Other islands—like Lido, Burano, and Murano—are not included. For example, if you arrive in Venice and take a ferry straight from Piazzale Roma to Lido, you won’t have to pay the fee.
