What you need to know about the Venice entry fee
The Venice access fee starts again at 10 euros from April 3, 2026, and applies only to day visitors. Think of it as a day ticket.
If you’re taking a day trip to Venice — arriving in the morning and leaving in the evening — you’ll need to pay this fee.
If you’re staying overnight at a hotel in Venice, you don’t need to pay the Venice entry fee, since you’ll already be paying the tourist tax. However, you still need to register on the city’s online portal and request a free QR code.
By the way: Even if your hotel is outside the historic center — for example on Lido — you don’t need to pay to visit the historic center.

Why does Venice charge an entry fee?
The fee was introduced because Venice is particularly fragile. As a city built on water, it requires far more maintenance than a typical city.
The thousands of day tourists who used to flood in on weekends mostly just strolled through the streets, past the sights of Venice.
In doing so, they didn’t spend money in the city, yet still generated trash and maintenance costs.
With the Venice ticket, the city aims both to reduce the number of day visitors and to fund the expensive upkeep.
The city of Venice also isn’t very fond of the term “entry fee” and much prefers to call it a “contribution.”
When do you have to pay the Venice entry fee?
The Venice tourist tax only applies during Venice’s peak travel season, from April through July.
It always falls on public holidays and bridge days, because those are the days when the most visitors come to Venice.
On these days in 2026, the Venice access fee applies:
- April: 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30.
- May: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31.
- June: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28.
- July: 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26.
On these days, you’re required to have a ticket between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
Outside of these dates, there’s no admission fee for a day trip to Venice.
Where do you pay the Venice entry fee?
You pay the 10 euros on the City of Venice’s online portal.
You can do this completely spontaneously, since there’s no maximum ticket quota. But: if you buy the Venice admission ticket up to four days in advance, it only costs 5 euros — so it’s worth planning ahead.
You can pay by credit card or PayPal.
You’ll then receive a QR code by email, which you’ll need to show if there’s a check. Save it on your phone to be safe.
Note: There are no entry checkpoints into Venice where the ticket is checked. Controls within the city are carried out randomly.
Alternatively, you can also register and pay cash at tobacco shops — for example at Venice’s train station. The QR code will be printed out for you.
Anyone who can’t show a ticket faces a fine of between 50 and 300 euros.
Who has to pay the Venice entry fee?
The fee applies to day visitors aged 14 and older who arrive in Venice between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
So if you’re only coming to Venice for a romantic dinner in the evening, for example, you don’t need to pay anything.
Who is exempt from the Venice entry fee?
If you fall into one of these categories, you’re off the hook:
- Overnight guests,
- Children under 14,
- those heading directly to the islands without passing through the historic center (this includes Murano, Burano, and Lido)
- People with disabilities and their companions,
- School trips,
- those visiting someone in Venice.
Note: Even if you belong to one of these categories, you still need to register on the portal. Just click on “Exceptions” and select your category — you’ll receive your QR code for free. If you’re visiting Venice with children under 14, you’ll need to request the free QR code for them as well.
Which parts of Venice does the day ticket cover?
The day ticket applies to the entire center of Venice. The island of Giudecca is included as well.
The remaining islands — Lido, Burano, and Murano — are not included. If you arrive in Venice and take the ferry directly from Piazzale Roma to Lido, for example, you don’t need to pay anything.
