- The name Traben-Trarbach is quite a mouthful. That’s why we like to call it Trabi. Locals find that funny, but they’ll just have to live with it.
- In the 19th century, Traben-Trarbach was the second city in Germany after Berlin to have electric street lamps.
- Around that same time, it was also the second-largest wine trading hub in Europe, right after Bordeaux.
- All that wealth is exactly why Traben-Trarbach has so many magnificent Art Nouveau buildings today.

The townscape of Traben-Trarbach is defined by stunning Art Nouveau architecture. Berlin architect Bruno Möhring in particular really let his creativity run wild here, leaving behind some truly beautiful structures.
The standouts are the Art Nouveau Bellevue Hotel, the bridge gate of the Moselle Bridge, the Buddha Museum, Villa Hüsgen, and Villa Breucker — all worth seeking out as you wander through town.
Grevenburg Castle Ruins
High above Trarbach sit the ruins of Grevenburg Castle, and the short walk up is absolutely worth it.
Your reward: a fantastic panorama over the town and into the Moselle Valley — plus a cold drink at the castle’s beer garden. A perfect combination.
The Underground World of Traben-Trarbach

Buddha Museum
A Buddha museum on the Moselle? Sounds strange, but it’s real — and honestly, it’s pretty amazing. Inside the lovingly restored Art Nouveau Kayser winery, you can marvel at more than 2,000 Buddha figures from around the world.
The collection spans many eras and traditions, from tiny figurines to exhibits weighing up to two tons. Some figures are 1,700 years old and nearly one of a kind. It’s a genuinely surprising highlight when visiting Traben-Trarbach.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM to 6 PM. From November through March, it’s only open Friday through Sunday.

Climbing Park: Mosel Adventure Forest
Our favorite spot for some fun and exercise is the climbing park on Mont Royal. The Mosel Adventure Forest has fantastic routes for beginners (even those with a fear of heights) all the way up to seasoned pros, plus dedicated routes for kids.
The standout feature is the Canopy Trail — at 1.5 kilometers, it’s one of the longest zip line courses in Europe. New elements and routes get added every year, so even a return visit stays exciting.
In summer the park is open daily; in spring and fall it runs mainly on weekends and during school breaks. It closes from November through March. Check the website for current hours.

Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt
Christmas markets are everywhere, but in Traben-Trarbach it all happens underground. The town’s wine cellars get wonderfully cozy in the weeks leading up to Christmas — there are treats, handcrafted goods, art, and of course plenty of wine.
The Wein-Nachts-Markt runs from late November through early January. Check the market’s website for exact dates and participating cellars.

How about a round of mini golf? You can say you’ve played a few holes on Germany’s oldest mini golf course — clubs have been swinging here since 1955.

Hotel Goldene Traube by Neugart: A brand-new boutique bed-and-breakfast run by a young couple. Rooms are modern and stylishly furnished — seriously great value for money.
Hotel Bellevue: A gorgeous Art Nouveau building right on the Moselle — Heinz Rühmann was once a regular guest here. Tastefully and lovingly decorated, making a stay here an absolute experience. The restaurant is excellent too.
Moselschlösschen: Also right on the Moselle, with a beautiful setting, a large garden, and a staircase that alone makes it worth a look. Recently renovated and run with real heart.

The Best Restaurants in Traben-Trarbach
Traben-Trarbach is a great place to eat. The dining scene leans toward hearty, meat-heavy regional cooking — but there are some real gems if you know where to look.
Upscale Cuisine
Die Graifen: One of our absolute favorite restaurants in Trabi. Seasonal cooking with regional and Mediterranean influences, a concise menu, everything seriously delicious, and a great atmosphere. There’s also a charming furniture and accessories shop attached.
Restaurant Belle Epoque: The restaurant at Hotel Bellevue. Upscale cooking with a French touch — set menus and à la carte classics both available.
Typical Moselle Regional Cuisine
Alte Zunftscheune: The word “rustic” was basically invented for places like this — lots of wood, knick-knacks on every surface, and good, hearty home-style cooking. Exactly what you want after a day of hiking.
Burgers
Riff Schnitzel- & Burgerhouse: As big burger fans, we were genuinely blown away the first time we came here — and we’ve been ordering takeout there ever since. The Riff is the restaurant at the campground in the Rißbach suburb. The schnitzels are nothing special, but the burgers are really good. Our favorites are the “Oh my Greek” and the “Holy Guacamoley.”
International Cuisine
If you’re after good international food on the Moselle, things get tricky fast. Finding a decent pizza in Traben-Trarbach is unfortunately just as tough as tracking down good Thai or Vietnamese. On the bright side, there’s a very good Indian restaurant and a fantastic sushi spot.
Namaste Shiva: Really great Indian food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. We’re regulars here too — the craving for a good curry or dal hits us pretty regularly.
Cavallerie by Ruby: How do you describe this place? That’s genuinely tough. Ruby is from China and runs Cavallerie on the ground floor of Hotel Trabener Hof as a one-woman show — she’s chef, sushi master, and server all in one. The sushi is truly outstanding, and we have high standards on that front. On weekends there are sometimes select Chinese dishes — not the generic stuff you’d find at a typical Chinese restaurant, but genuinely authentic cooking. The flip side is that things can take a little longer, but the wait is totally worth it. There’s no website, but Ruby’s personal Facebook page always has the latest info.
Cafés
drei & fünf – Rösterei und Café – At 3 & 5 on Brückenstraße you’ll find excellent house-roasted coffee and the best cake for miles around. The café is currently only open Saturdays and Sundays, but a visit is truly worth it. All the cakes are homemade and soooooo good. Don’t miss it.
Shopping in Traben-Trarbach
Traben-Trarbach isn’t exactly a shopping destination. The retail scene is honestly a bit of a mixed bag — the pedestrian zone and surrounding streets have some pretty uninspiring souvenir shops, but there are a few bright spots. The main shopping street is Brückenstraße in the Trarbach part of town.
Der Mensch lebt nicht vom Brot allein: The name alone is great, and the store is even better — an “Art Nouveau concept store for handcrafted coffee culture and carefully selected beautiful things.” Sounds wonderful, and it really is. At the heart of it is owner Manuel with his espresso machine, turning out excellent coffee. The shop mainly sells handcrafted bags and accessories, plus a few other carefully chosen items. Opening hours are currently irregular, as Manuel is working on a new project across the Moselle: Die Mosel Vinothek.
Kortmanns: Looking for a shirt or a dress? Kortmanns on Brückenstraße is the right address.
Dein Buchladen: A small bookstore on Bahnstraße — not the most extensive selection, but if you need something to read on your trip, you’ll find it here. Children’s books and magazines are available too.
