In a nutshell

  • Tirana is the capital of Albania and often the first or last stop on an Albania road trip. The city stands out for its fascinating museums and unique landmarks.
  • Our top picks for things to do in Tirana are the Namazgja Mosque, the Bunk’Art Museum, and the Pyramid. Great highlights just outside the city are Bovilla Lake and the local mountain Dajti.
  • A great hotel with an excellent price-to-value ratio is the Hotel Boutique Restaurant Gloria. On a tighter budget, the La Gioia Apartment is a solid choice.

The Most Beautiful Sights in Tirana on a Map

For a first overview, we’ve marked the top things to do in Tirana on a map.

Our map with the Tirana sights

Namazgja Mosque

The Great Mosque in Tirana
The Great Mosque is, in our opinion, the most beautiful sight in Tirana
  • Admission: free
  • Opening hours: daily from 5 AM to 9 PM (closed during prayer times)

What do you need to know? The Namazgja Mosque is considered the largest mosque in the Balkans. It was only completed in 2022, so it’s completely modern. The four minarets are around 50 meters tall and the dome is 30 meters. Inside, you can admire the architecture and explore the prayer halls.

Is it worth it? Absolutely! For us, the Namazgja Mosque is the most beautiful building in Tirana and a genuine top highlight. We’d definitely put it at the top of your list.

Our tip: To enter the mosque, you’ll need to take off your shoes and wear long clothing. Women are given a robe and headscarf at the entrance.

Skanderbeg Square

The opera house on Skanderbeg Square in Tirana
The opera house on Skanderbeg Square in Tirana

What do you need to know? Skanderbeg Square is a central plaza covering around 40,000 square meters — that’s more than five soccer fields. Key Tirana attractions surround it, including the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the opera house, and the National Museum. It’s the ideal starting point for a day of sightseeing.

Is it worth it? We don’t find the square itself particularly impressive, but its central location and the highlights nearby make it a must on any city trip to Tirana.

Our tip: Most free walking tours of Tirana start from Skanderbeg Square. We really recommend joining one — you’ll pick up fascinating facts about the city’s history and get some great insider tips along the way.

National Historical Museum

You can admire this mosaic wall at the National Historical Museum in Albania
Important info: The National Historical Museum is currently closed for renovation.

What do you need to know? The National Historical Museum is Albania’s largest museum, telling the country’s story from the Middle Ages through to communism. The exhibitions are organized by era, and you can easily spend a few hours here if you’re into history.

Is it worth it? Definitely — especially for history buffs, but even if you’re not, it’s a great place to understand Albania’s past.

Our tip: Another fascinating history museum nearby is the House of Leaves Museum. The Bank of Albania Museum is also right on Skanderbeg Square.

Bunk' Art Museum

Bunk'Art Museum 2
The entrance to Bunk’Art Museum 2 in Tirana
  • Admission: 900 Lek / 9 euros per museum
  • Opening hours: daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM (both museums)

What do you need to know? From 1944 to 1991, Albania was a dictatorship, and around 200,000 nuclear bunkers were built across the country to protect against attacks. Two of them now house museums: Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2. Bunk’Art 2 is right in the city center, while Bunk’Art 1 is about five kilometers outside. Both offer genuinely gripping exhibitions about life under the dictatorship.

Is it worth it? Yes — it’s seriously fascinating to see the bunkers from the inside. Everything is well explained on signs, with English translations available. If you’re short on time in Tirana, visiting just one of the Bunk’Art museums is enough.

Pyramid of Tirana

Pyramid in Tirana
The Pyramid of Tirana is made up of one thing above all: stairs
  • Admission: free

What do you need to know? The Pyramid of Tirana was built in 1988 as a memorial to Albanian dictator and communist Enver Hoxha, and for a time served as his mausoleum. When communism collapsed in 1991, the pyramid took on various roles over the years — it even served as a NATO base during the Kosovo War. Today it functions as a cultural center and, with its staircases and observation platform, is one of the most talked-about things to do in Tirana.

Is it worth it? Yes, the Pyramid is a must-see. From the top you get a great view over the city, and its history makes it a really compelling place to visit. That said, we didn’t find the structure particularly attractive aesthetically.

Tirana Castle

Castle in Tirana
Not much of the castle remains in Tirana: it’s a shopping center

What do you need to know? Tirana Castle isn’t an ancient ruin — it’s a shopping center. You still enter through old stone walls, but inside you’ll find modern buildings with restaurants, souvenir shops, and stores. It’s always lively and makes for a nice spot to wander around in the heart of the city.

Is it worth it? Yes, but mainly if you want to browse around, grab a coffee, or have a snack at one of the venues inside.

Our tip: There’s even a seriously charming hotel inside the castle — the Castle Boutique Hotel — perfect if you’re after a special place to stay in Tirana.

Pazari i Ri

Bazaar Pazari i Ri
You can buy all kinds of things at the Pazari i Ri bazaar

What do you need to know? Pazari i Ri is both a bazaar and a neighborhood in Tirana. The area was modernized in 2015, and since then it’s been a lively open market hall with a traditional bazaar atmosphere. Plenty of hip restaurants and cafés surround it.

Is it worth it? Totally. Whether you’re eating out or hunting for souvenirs, Pazari i Ri is a great area to spend some time.

Our tip: A popular spot for local food is Odas Garden. For a charming café stop, try Mulliri Vjeter.

Tirana Park and Lake

Tirana Park with a lake
Tirana Park is a wonderful place to go for a walk

What do you need to know? If you want to escape the city buzz without leaving Tirana, head to Tirana Park. It’s a large green space with an artificial lake and a loop trail running around it. Keep your eyes open and you might even spot turtles in the water.

Is it worth it? If you’ve had enough of the urban hustle, Tirana Park is the perfect retreat. There’s also plenty of shade, which is especially welcome on hot summer days.

Our tip: The park is also great for working out — you can jog, ride a bike, or use the outdoor gym equipment. The loop trail around the lake is about five kilometers long.

Dajti Mountain

The cable car in Tirana
There’s even a cable car that takes you up the local mountain
  • Admission (cable car): 1,400 Lek / 14 euros for a round trip
  • Opening hours (cable car): Mon–Fri from 9 AM to 6:30 PM, Sat & Sun from 9 AM to 7:00 PM

What do you need to know? Dajti Mountain is Tirana’s local mountain, standing at an impressive 1,613 meters. It’s located about 20 kilometers northeast of the city, and you can reach it by gondola in 15 minutes — though note you don’t get all the way to the summit. From the mountain station, there are great views over Tirana and plenty of fun activities, including mini golf and paragliding. There’s also a great panorama restaurant up top.

Is it worth it? Yes — the cable car ride up Dajti Mountain is especially great for a family vacation with kids. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the mountains elsewhere in Albania, though, we’d probably skip it.

How to get there: The valley station is on the outskirts of Tirana near Bunk’Art 1. You can get there by bus from the city center — check the Dajti cable car website for bus details. There’s also a free parking lot at the valley station.

Bovilla Lake

Bovilla Lake
Bovilla Lake is one of the most beautiful sights in the area around Tirana

What do you need to know? About 30 kilometers from Tirana lies the stunning turquoise reservoir of Bovilla. A road — mostly gravel — leads to the lake through the beautiful Bovilla Canyon. Once you reach the lake, a winding road climbs up into the Gamti Mountains, offering incredible views of the water. Swimming isn’t allowed, as the lake is the main drinking water source for Tirana.

Is it worth it? Definitely! Bovilla Lake is a fantastic day trip from Tirana if you want to get out into nature — and the photo opportunities are seriously stunning.

Important info: We weren’t allowed to drive to Bovilla Lake in our rental car. The road is best suited to jeeps, so a guided tour is a great alternative.

Our tour tip: Guided tour to Bovilla Lake and the Gamti Mountains from Tirana

Beaches near Tirana

Durres beach
The beach at Durres stretches on forever and is always busy

There are no beaches in Tirana itself, but the sea isn’t far away. The nearest beaches are in Durres — Albania’s second-largest city.

The main beach is 10 kilometers long and sandy. It’s easy to make a day trip from Tirana to Durres: by car it takes about 30 minutes, and buses run there regularly too.

Our tip: If you have a car, head to a stretch of beach a few kilometers further south of the center. It’s noticeably less crowded there.

A bit more of an under-the-radar pick for a beach near Tirana is Spille Beach. It’s about an hour by car from the capital.

Is Tirana Safe?

Yes, we felt safe as women in Tirana. We walked the streets both during the day and in the evening without any issues.

We did come across a few shady characters — but honestly, you’ll find those in any big city, and nothing actually happened.

Petty theft can occur in Tirana. Always keep your valuables close to your body and don’t let your bag out of your sight. Do that, and you should be fine.

We’d always leave important documents and large sums of cash back at your accommodation and only take the essentials with you for sightseeing.

Getting to Tirana

You have plenty of options for getting to Tirana.

By plane to Tirana

Tirana’s international airport (TIA) is just under 20 kilometers outside the city center, with direct flights available from many major European airports.

A bus runs from the airport to the city center approximately every half hour:

By land to Tirana

If you want to do a full Balkan road trip or skip flying altogether, you can also drive to Tirana. You’ll pass through Slovenia and along the coast of Croatia.

Albania is also a popular destination for motorcyclists, who often take a similar overland route.

Getting there from other cities in Albania

Tirana is super well connected to all places in Albania. Since Albania is a small country, you can reach Tirana from anywhere in the country by car in just a few hours.

If you’re traveling without a car, buses run from most destinations — including Shkodra, Theth, Vlora, and Saranda — to Tirana. The central bus terminal is located a little outside the city center (Google Maps).

Getting Around Tirana

You can explore all of Tirana’s central attractions on foot. For sights further outside the center, like Bunk’Art Museum 1 or the bus terminal, your best bet is a city bus.

A single city bus ride costs just around 40 Lek (40 cents), paid in cash on the bus. Bus connections are shown on Google Maps.
