The Most Beautiful Sights in Slovenia on a Map
For a first overview, we’ve marked the best things to see in Slovenia on a map.

Lake Bled

What do you need to know? It’s the most famous attraction in Slovenia: Lake Bled. Surrounded by mountains, it shimmers in a stunning turquoise blue. The standout feature on the lake is the little island with its church. The walking trail around the lake and Bled Castle are also not to be missed. There are designated swimming spots along the shore, and you can paddle across Lake Bled by SUP or rowboat.
Is it worth it? Yes! Lake Bled is very touristy — especially in summer — but it’s also simply gorgeous and a must on any Slovenia road trip.
Our tip: The best view of Lake Bled is from Mount Ojstrica on the western side of the lake. There are also a few free swimming spots up here.

Old Town of Ljubljana

What do you need to know? Slovenia’s capital completely won us over with its charming historic center. It sits along the Ljubljanica River, spanned by beautiful bridges like the Dragon Bridge. Historic buildings line the streets, and you can explore several main squares. The absolute top sight in Ljubljana, though, is the castle — you can reach it by funicular.
Is it worth it? Oh yes! We didn’t expect all that much from Ljubljana, but we were genuinely blown away by the architecture and the city center.

Piran

What do you need to know? Piran is our personal pick for the most beautiful spot on the coast in Slovenia. It sits near the border with Croatia on a cape, surrounded by water on all sides. The historic quarter around Tartini Square completely blew us away — we especially loved St. George’s Church on a small hill, from where you can take in the entire old town and the sea. Seriously stunning!
Is it worth it? Absolutely. Piran is a wonderful travel destination in Slovenia. You can stroll leisurely through the alleyways, dine at a restaurant with sea views, and take a dip in the Mediterranean.
Our tip: A few kilometers further north along the coast is Moonshine Bay — a real under-the-radar gem in Slovenia.

Soča Valley

What do you need to know? The Soča is a river about 140 kilometers long that shimmers in a crystal-clear turquoise color. It originates in the Slovenian Alps near Trenta and flows into the Mediterranean. Throughout the entire Soča Valley, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding mountains. The most well-known village on the river is Bovec — here you have countless opportunities to try water sports like kayaking or rafting.
Is it worth it? Yes. We recommend doing a road trip through the Soča Valley to see as much as possible. You can also try thrilling water sports here — kayaking and rafting are among the best activities in Slovenia.
Our tip: A real local favorite in the Soča Valley is the village of Kanal, between Tolmin and Nova Gorica. Beautiful architecture meets a truly picturesque landscape here.
Our hotel tip: Boutique Hotel Dobra Vila Bovec
Ultimate Alps: Adventure in the Soča Valley
If you want to not just see the Soča Valley but truly experience it, Ultimate Alps is the place to go.
This small operator from Bovec specializes in guided outdoor adventures — with a focus on quality over quantity. You’ll travel in small groups, accompanied by experienced guides (often the owners themselves), who bring a real passion for the region and the sport. Even as a beginner, you’ll feel comfortable and confident quickly.
Highlights include canyoning in the Fratarica Canyon, kayak tours on the Soča, and classic rafting — all in the heart of the Julian Alps. Perfect if you want to combine nature with adventure.

Triglav National Park

What do you need to know? Triglav National Park is the crown jewel of Slovenia’s hiking areas. Towering peaks, unspoiled nature, and beautiful mountain lakes make it one of the top things to do in Slovenia. Great starting points into the park are Lake Bohinj, Trenta, and Kranjska Gora.
Is it worth it? Absolutely, for outdoor enthusiasts. And if hiking isn’t your thing, the drive by car over the Vršič Pass alone is totally worth the trip.
Our tip: A truly spectacular corner of Triglav National Park is the Seven Lakes Valley — you can only reach it on foot, and one stunning mountain lake follows another.
By the way: Keep in mind when hiking that bears live in Slovenia. You can find out more in our tips on safety in Slovenia and travel tips for Slovenia.
Kranjska Gora

What do you need to know? Kranjska Gora is a small mountain village and a great base for exploring Triglav National Park. The center is full of cozy restaurants, and just outside of town is the famous Jasna Lake. In winter, Kranjska Gora transforms into one of Slovenia’s most important winter sports hubs — the surrounding mountains offer excellent skiing and snowboarding.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! For a relaxed afternoon, grab a coffee in the village center and take a stroll around Jasna Lake. Outdoor enthusiasts will feel right at home in the mountains.

Logar Valley

What do you need to know? The Logar Valley is a glacial valley in northern Slovenia and, just like Triglav National Park, fantastic for hiking. There are beautiful waterfalls like Slap Rinka, and you can climb peaks like Skuta. To get there, head first to the town of Solčava and then continue into the valley from there.
Is it worth it? Oh yes. It’s a great alternative to Triglav National Park and far less well-known — which means the valley and its surroundings feel genuinely authentic.
Our hotel tip: Hiša Ojstrica
Maribor

What do you need to know? Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city, located in the less touristy eastern part of the country. The Drava River flows through the city, and the old quarter with its many historic buildings is absolutely charming. Top points of interest include the main square Glavni Trg, Maribor Castle, and the Lent district.
Is it worth it? Yes. Maribor is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia and a must-see in the east. You can easily combine it with a visit to Graz in Austria — also a truly beautiful city.

Ptuj

What do you need to know? Ptuj is the oldest city in Slovenia and sits near Maribor — there’s a ton to see here. The absolute standout is the historic Ptuj Castle and the old town with its city tower. You can also take a lovely walk along the Drava River, which you get a great view of from the castle.
Is it worth it? If you’re traveling in eastern Slovenia, a stop in Ptuj is a must. You can easily do a day trip from Maribor, or stay overnight for a night.

Postojna Caves

- Admission: €46.50 for caves & castle
- Tickets: you can buy them online here
What do you need to know? Two seriously impressive sights in Slovenia are the Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle. The Postojna cave system stretches 24 kilometers, and there’s even a cave train that runs through it. You can discover stalactite sculptures and the cave-dwelling creatures known as “baby dragons.” Predjama Castle is also part of the complex and is recognized as the world’s largest cave castle — wow!
Is it worth it? Definitely! Postojna makes for a fantastic day trip in Slovenia, especially for families with kids. Both the caves and the castle are incredibly cool.
Our tip: There’s even a cave hotel — the Postojna Cave Hotel Jama — located right at the entrance to the caves.
Škocjan Caves Park

- Admission: €22
- Tickets: you can buy them online here
What do you need to know? The Škocjan Caves are another impressive cave system in Slovenia. They stretch 6.2 kilometers, and a hiking trail runs through them that you can walk in full or just in part. The Reka River also flows through the cave, creating some great photo opportunities.
Is it worth it? Yes — Škocjan Caves Park is an off-the-beaten-path alternative to the Postojna Caves, and it’s a better fit if you’d rather explore caves on foot than ride a train through them.
Our tip: The caves aren’t far from the coast. We’d recommend staying overnight by the sea — in Trieste or Koper, for example — and making a day trip to the cave park.
Velika Planina

What do you need to know? Velika Planina means “Great Alp” and is the largest shepherd settlement in all of Europe. Around 140 traditional huts stand here, offering a wonderful window into alpine farming life. You can sample local products at some of the mountain huts and explore hiking trails across the alpine pasture.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! Velika Planina is a truly special mountain experience — and since you can get up there by cable car, it’s accessible for everyone.
Our tip: Some of the traditional huts have been converted into charming chalets where you can spend the night. Really cool!
