All Tips for Lake Bled

Here’s everything you can do and see at Lake Bled. Let’s dive in!

Loop Trail Around the Lake

Walking around Lake Bled
Lake Bled is a fantastic place to go for a walk

What you need to know: The loop trail around Lake Bled is perfect for getting great photos from every angle and getting a feel for the whole area. It’s mostly flat and easy to manage, with plenty of spots to stop — for photos, a swim, or a coffee break.

Is it worth it? Absolutely! Walking around the lake is a genuine must-do in Bled. If you’ve got a full day, you can add detours up to the castle or Ojstrica Mountain and tick off even more highlights along the way.

Our tip: If walking isn’t your thing, you can also bike around Lake Bled. Either way, try to go in the morning — the trail gets seriously crowded as the day goes on.

Boats on Lake Bled

Traditional boats Bled
These are the traditional wooden boats on Lake Bled

What you need to know: There are 23 traditional wooden boats on Lake Bled called “Pletna.” They were modeled after Venetian gondolas and ferry tourists across the lake every day. You’ll also find plenty of rowboat rental spots around the shore — and if you’re feeling active, paddleboarding across the lake is a great option too.

Is it worth it? Totally! We’d recommend renting a rowboat or SUP and going at your own pace. You’ll have way more flexibility than on the Pletna boats.

Our tip: Head out early in the morning when the lake is still calm and quiet.

Church on Lake Bled

  • Admission: 12 euros
  • Tickets: purchased on-site

What you need to know: The small island with the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary is arguably the most iconic image in all of Slovenia — and it’s the only natural lake island in the entire country. You can reach it by Pletna boat or row yourself out there. Once you arrive, you can explore the church and climb the bell tower.

Is it worth it? Definitely as a photo subject. That said, the tiny island gets absolutely packed with tourists, so we’d honestly think twice about visiting — unless you row out there early in the morning on your own.

Swimming in the Lake

Lake Bled
Lake Bled is great for swimming

What you need to know: Swimming in Lake Bled is allowed — but only at designated swimming areas. There’s a paid beach below Bled Castle and a few free spots, mostly on the western side of the lake. It can get really crowded in summer, so plan accordingly.

Is it worth it? Oh yes! A dip in the lake is always a great idea. From June to September, the water temperature can climb above 68°F (20°C) — though outside of those months it’s usually considerably cooler. By the way, the beaches along Slovenia’s coast around the town of Piran are also well worth a visit.

Our tip: If you want to swim a lot and really relax by the water, we’d actually recommend Lake Bohinj instead — it’s about 30 kilometers from Bled and noticeably less crowded.

More Attractions in Bled

Lake Bled isn’t the only highlight here. These are the other points of interest around the lake that are genuinely worth your time.

Bled Castle

Bled Castle
Bled Castle perches on a cliff above the lake

What you need to know: Bled Castle immediately catches your eye from down by the lake — the sight of that massive rock with the castle perched on top is seriously stunning. You can tour the castle and get a fascinating look into its history.

Is it worth it? If you’re into castles and history, absolutely. If you’re more of a nature person, we’d skip the entry fee and just enjoy the view of it from the lakeshore.

Our tip: From the loop trail around the lake, it’s about a 15-minute uphill walk to the castle. You can also drive up from the center of Bled if you’d rather skip the climb.

Ojstrica Mountain

Ojstrica Mountain
Ojstrica Mountain offers the best views of Lake Bled

What you need to know: Ojstrica Mountain is, in our opinion, the best vantage point over Lake Bled. Getting there involves a short hike — from the western shore, it’s about 700 meters with around 330 feet (100 meters) of elevation gain. The panoramic view at the top makes every step worth it.

Is it worth it? Oh yes! We really loved the view from Ojstrica and the short hike up to it.

Our tip: If you want to do more than just hike to the viewpoint, there are plenty of other great trails around Bled. Browse the options on Komoot: view hiking routes.

Bled Town Center

What you need to know: Bled’s town center is small and touristy — there’s no real historic district to speak of, mostly just hotels and restaurants. The standout sights are St. Martin’s Parish Church and the Old Parish House next door, which is now a hotel. The lakeside promenade near the center is also a genuine draw.

Is it worth it? Depends. The town center is a great base for exploring Lake Bled, but there isn’t a huge amount to see here. When it comes to sightseeing, we’d keep your focus on the lake itself.

Our tip: For a place to stay in Bled, we recommend the Old Bled House.

Day Trips and Activities in Bled

Day Trip to Lake Bohinj

Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is a fantastic day trip destination from Bled

What you need to know: If you’re spending a few days in Bled, a day trip to Lake Bohinj is a must. It’s 30 kilometers away and reachable by car, bus, or bike. The lake is larger than Lake Bled and a great base for all kinds of hikes.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. Swimming is allowed everywhere in Lake Bohinj, the scenery is stunning, and it’s also a perfect gateway into Triglav National Park.

Our tip: There are some really lovely places to stay at Lake Bohinj too. The Hotel Bohinj is super stylish and modern.

Hiking in Triglav National Park

Seven Lakes region in Triglav National Park
Triglav National Park is a hiker’s paradise in Slovenia — especially the Seven Lakes Valley

What you need to know: Triglav National Park is a mountain region west of Bled and seriously popular with hikers. You can summit high peaks and explore beautiful valleys. From Bled, your best bet is to drive to Lake Bohinj and start hiking from there.

Is it worth it? For outdoor enthusiasts, without a doubt! You’ll find spectacular views and trails without the tourist crowds.

Our tip: Hike to the Valley of the Seven Lakes. Drive to Planina Blato and head into the valley from there — it’s dotted with beautiful mountain lakes: view popular hiking routes on Komoot.

Day Trip to Kranjska Gora and Lake Jasna

Downtown Kranjska Gora
The downtown area of Kranjska Gora is very charming

What you need to know: Kranjska Gora is a touristy mountain village right on the border with Austria. It has a pretty historic center, and in winter it’s a great base for skiing. The real highlight, though, is Lake Jasna — a gorgeous alpine lake about 1.5 kilometers south of the village.

Is it worth it? Definitely! Kranjska Gora is touristy but genuinely beautiful, and Lake Jasna is absolutely worth the trip.

Our tip: If you have time, it’s worth spending the night in Kranjska Gora. We recommend the Hotel Pino Alpino.

How do you get there? The fastest way is by car — about 30 minutes. By bus it takes just over an hour with a transfer in Jesenice. Check connections on Google Maps.

Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is a true highlight in the area around Bled

What you need to know: Vintgar Gorge stretches 1.6 kilometers, with the Radovna River flowing through it in vivid, shimmering colors. A trail runs alongside the river with some seriously photogenic views. The top highlights are the railway bridge spanning the gorge and the Šum Waterfall.

Is it worth it? 100%! That said, try to visit outside peak season (July and August), or go early in the morning or late afternoon. It’s open from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM.

How do you get there? By car you’ll reach the Vintgar Gorge parking lot in about 10 minutes.

Day Trip to Radovljica

Old town of Radovljica
The old town of Radovljica is definitely worth a day trip

What you need to know: Radovljica is far more charming than central Bled — it has a medieval old quarter, and it’s only about 7 kilometers from the lake. The historic center is small and totally adorable. You can stroll around and settle into a lovely café, like Cafe Vidic.

Is it worth it? Yes, Radovljica is a real under-the-radar pick in Slovenia and makes for a great half-day outing from Bled.

Our tip: If it’s raining in Bled, Radovljica is especially well suited as a day trip. There are a few museums here, including the Čebelarski muzej (Beekeeping Museum).

How do you get there? By car it’s about 15 minutes from Bled, with plenty of parking in town. Buses also run regularly and take around 20 minutes. Check connections on Google Maps.
