General Info About Theth at a Glance
Theth is located in the far north of Albania in Theth National Park. The mountain village essentially consists of just a few houses (almost all of them are guesthouses) — there’s no real town center to speak of.
The “center” is found at a bridge over the Thethi River. There you’ll find a parking lot that also serves as the bus stop. You’ll also find the only supermarket in Theth here (Mini Market Jezerca).
Otherwise, you’ll mostly be out and about in the national park, since Theth is a fantastic spot in Albania for hiking. Here’s everything you can do here.
The Best Activities in Theth

Hike from Theth to Valbona Pass

The hike from Theth to Valbona is one of the most popular hikes in all of Albania. You hike 8 kilometers uphill from Theth to the spectacular Valbona Pass. Once you reach the top, you can push a little further to a small summit before heading back.
Alternatively, you can continue the trail all the way to Valbona and spend the night there. From Valbona, you can only get back to Shkodra by van and ferry across Lake Koman — or you hike the same route back to Theth.

Hike to Blue Eye Theth & Grunas Waterfall

Another great day hike in Theth, Albania is the trail to Blue Eye Theth — a natural spring whose water shimmers in vivid colors. It’s a real standout in Albania. The trail is moderate in difficulty — it’s fairly flat with no serious climbing involved.
Good to know: If 19 kilometers sounds like too much, you can cover the first stretch by jeep.
On the way to or from the Blue Eye, definitely make the detour to the Grunas Waterfall as well — another great attraction in Theth National Park. This detour is included in the Komoot route linked above.
You can also go swimming at the Blue Eye, by the way. Just be warned: the water is ice cold even in summer.
Church of Theth
For a more relaxed outing, head to the village church. The “Kisha e Thethit” sits about one kilometer south of the center and makes for a gorgeous photo.
You can go inside and explore the interior, or simply stretch out on the surrounding meadow and soak up the scenery.

Getting to Theth
There’s only one paved road to Theth, and it runs from Shkodra. From Shkodra you can reach Theth by private car or motorcycle, a transfer, or the public bus.
Shkodra is about a two-hour drive from Tirana, by the way.

Getting to Theth, Albania by Motorcycle or Car
If you’re doing a road trip through Albania by car, you can drive to Theth yourself. You should feel very confident driving in Albania before attempting this stretch, though. The road is narrow and often only one lane wide, even though traffic runs in both directions.
It doesn’t see much traffic, but you will occasionally meet a car coming the other way — so stay alert. Speeding is as common here as it is throughout Albania.

Also expect potholes, switchbacks, and plenty of uphill and downhill stretches.
Our tip: There’s a second road (the southern route) to Theth that’s unpaved. It’s a great alternative for reaching Theth by motorcycle.
Getting to Theth by Bus
The public bus from Shkodra to Theth runs twice a day. Here are the key details about the Shkodra–Theth bus:

How many days should you spend in Theth?
We’d recommend planning 1–2 days in Theth — depending on which hikes and activities you want to fit in.
When is the best time to visit Theth?
The summer months from June through September are ideal. That’s when you’ll have the best weather, snow-free hiking trails, and all guesthouses open.
The shoulder season of April, May, and October is a solid alternative — it’s a bit cooler and there may be snow higher up, but you can still explore the area without any issues.
We’d advise against visiting in winter (November through March). Many guesthouses close, some trails have avalanche danger, and it gets bitterly cold.
Can you swim in Theth?
Yes! You can swim at the Blue Eye, at the Grunas Waterfall, or in the Shala River. Just keep in mind that the water is very cold everywhere — even in the height of summer.

Theth sits at approximately 770 meters above sea level — though the exact elevation varies depending on where in the village you are.
