In a nutshell

  • In this article, we’ll show you the most beautiful stops on a Slovenia road trip — with a hotel recommendation and a guide to how much time to spend at each one.
  • We share four concrete Slovenia itineraries: routes for 7 days, 10 days, and 14 days by car, plus a 2-week bus route for backpackers.

How Much Time Should You Plan for a Slovenia Road Trip?

For a Slovenia road trip as a self-driver, you should plan for at least 7 days. In one week, you can hit the country’s most important highlights by car or campervan.

Even better, give yourself 10 or 14 days — or more! That way you can travel at a more relaxed pace and even discover some lesser-known spots in Slovenia.

If you’re doing a road trip through Slovenia by bus, plan for at least 2 weeks, since getting from place to place by public transit takes more time.

How to Put Together Your Own Slovenia Itinerary

For a first overview, we’ve marked the most beautiful stops on a Slovenia road trip on a map.

Must-See

Lake Bled

The island with the church on Lake Bled
This is Lake Bled with its famous island

The best place to start your Slovenia road trip is Lake Bled, since it’s close to the border with Austria.

Here’s everything you can do at Lake Bled:

  • Walk around the entire lake
  • Hike up to the Ojstrica viewpoint
  • Row out to the island in the lake
  • Explore Bled Castle
  • Take a day trip to Lake Bohinj
  • Take a day trip to Vintgar Gorge

You should plan 2–3 days for all of these. If you only have one day, you’ll need to decide which highlights matter most to you.

In our guide to the best things to do at Lake Bled, we cover all the activities in more detail.

Must-See

Ljubljana

Slovenia’s capital is worth visiting mainly for its beautiful historic center. You can easily explore the top sights in central Ljubljana in a single day. If you’re also interested in the museums, plan for two days.

These are the top highlights in Ljubljana:

  • Ljubljana Castle with the funicular
  • Dragon Bridge
  • Triple Bridge
  • Central Market & Town Square
  • Congress Square
  • Nebotičnik Skyscraper
  • Museums such as the House of Illusions and the Slovenian National Gallery
If you have plenty of time

Maribor & Ptuj

Maribor is the country’s second-largest city and sits in the less touristy eastern part of Slovenia.

The standout feature of Maribor is the Drava River, where you can take a great stroll and snap some fantastic photos. The old quarter with the main square Glavni Trg and Maribor Castle are also not to be missed.

Even though one day is enough for Maribor itself, we recommend staying 2–3 nights. From here, you can easily take a day trip to Ptuj.

Ptuj is Slovenia’s oldest city and absolutely charming! The highlights are Ptuj Castle and the historic center with its town tower. From Maribor, it’s a 30-minute drive by car or 45 minutes by bus.

Must-See

Postojna Cave

Stalactites in Postojna Cave
Inside Postojna Cave you’ll see many stalactites and stalagmites

Postojna Cave lies on the way from Maribor or Ljubljana to the Slovenian coast. Rather than spending the night here, you make it a stopover on your Slovenia road trip.

At 24 kilometers long, Postojna Cave is a massive complex that even has a cave train running through it. You’ll also discover incredible stalactite formations and rare cave-dwelling creatures like “baby dragons.”

Our tip: A great alternative to Postojna Cave is Škocjan Caves Park — where you walk along an underground canyon.

Must-See

Slovenian Coast

Even though it’s barely visible on the map, a small stretch of Slovenia borders the Mediterranean Sea. For us, the most beautiful town on the Slovenian coast is Piran. The sea cliff area known as Moonshine Bay (Mondscheinbucht) is also a real highlight.

You can explore both spots in a single day. That said, it’s worth staying longer on the coast to fit in a beach day or to explore more towns like Koper and Izola.

Must-See

Soča Valley

From the Slovenian coast, you head back into the mountains.

Start your drive through the Soča Valley in Nova Gorica. It’s worth stopping at the Sabotinska Cesta bridge to take in the panorama of the old railway bridge over the Soča River.

From there, follow the river all the way to Bovec.

These are the stops you absolutely shouldn’t miss:

  • The charming village of Kanal ob Soči
  • Most na Soči Lake
  • The impressive Tolmin Gorge
  • Virje and Boka waterfalls

Spend the night in Bovec for one or two nights. If you stay two nights, you can try out some seriously fun activities during the day, like kayaking or rafting.

From Bovec, continue toward Kranjska Gora. Along the way, make sure to stop at the Great Soča Gorge — you can hike and swim there too.

Other beautiful sights along this stretch include the Viewpoint Supca and the Kugy Monument.

Must-See

Kranjska Gora

Jasna Lake
Jasna Lake is the most beautiful sight in Kranjska Gora

You should spend at least a full day in Kranjska Gora. In one day, you can take a relaxed hike to Lake Jasna and stroll through the charming old town.

This is also a great spot to pick up souvenirs and try traditional Slovenian food at a restaurant.

If you stay two days in Kranjska Gora, more hikes are absolutely worth it — such as the ascent of Mittagskogel.

If you have plenty of time

Logar Valley & Velika Planina

The traditional herdsmen's village of Velika Planina

  • How much time to plan? 2–3 days
  • Our hotel pick: Chalet Stane

The herdsmen’s village of Velika Planina is the largest high-altitude pasture in Europe and the perfect place to get a real glimpse into the lives of Slovenian farmers. There are many beautiful hiking trails across the alpine meadow here.

Velika Planina is part of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, which also include the Logar Valley — equally worth a visit. From the valley, you can hike to waterfalls or summit high peaks.

Slovenia Road Trip for 7 and 10 Days

If you have one week or 10 days for your Slovenia road trip, we recommend focusing on the western part of the country.

Route for 7 or 10 days through Slovenia

Our suggested itinerary for a 7-day Slovenia road trip

  • Lake Bled: 1 day (2 nights)
  • Ljubljana: 1 day (1 night)
  • Postojna Cave: 1 day (stopover)
  • Piran: 1 day (2 nights)
  • Soča Valley: 2 days (1 night)
  • Kranjska Gora: 1 day (1 night)

In one week you can hit all the major highlights in western Slovenia, but you’ll be doing some serious speed sightseeing and spending a lot of time in the car.

Our suggested itinerary for a 10-day Slovenia road trip

  • Lake Bled: 2 days (3 nights)
  • Ljubljana: 1 day (1 night)
  • Postojna Cave: 1 day (stopover)
  • Piran & Slovenian Coast: 2 days (3 nights)
  • Soča Valley: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Kranjska Gora: 1 day (1 night)

With 10 days, you can take your time on the route and fit in some hikes or relax on the beach.

Slovenia Road Trip for 2 Weeks

14 days in Slovenia is ideal for seeing all the major sights and getting to know the country at a leisurely pace.

Map of the perfect 2-week itinerary through Slovenia

Our suggested itinerary for a 2-week Slovenia road trip

  • Lake Bled: 2 days (3 nights)
  • Logar Valley & Velika Planina: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Maribor & Ptuj: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Ljubljana: 1 day (1 night)
  • Postojna Cave: 1 day (stopover)
  • Piran & Slovenian Coast: 2 days (3 nights)
  • Soča Valley: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Kranjska Gora: 1 day (1 night)

If you have more than 2 weeks, even better! You can travel at an even more relaxed pace and enjoy plenty of great activities in Slovenia — like longer hikes, rafting, a spa day, and so much more.

Slovenia Road Trip by Bus

Exploring Slovenia by bus takes a bit more planning, but it’s still a great way to see the country — especially for backpackers.

Our suggested itinerary by bus

  • Lake Bled: 2 days (3 nights)
  • Ljubljana: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Maribor & Ptuj: 2 days (2 nights)
  • Slovenian Coast: 3 days (3 nights)
  • Bovec: 3 days (2 nights)
  • Kranjska Gora: 1 day (2 nights)

You should allow at least 2 weeks for this route, and ideally even more. Bus rides take longer than car trips — plus you need to factor in waiting times and walks to bus stops.

Unfortunately, not all destinations in Slovenia are well served by buses. We recommend basing yourself in a larger town and booking day trips from there to reach more remote highlights.

Our hostel picks in Slovenia

Lake Bled: Bled Hostel

Ljubljana: AdHoc Hostel

Maribor: B&B HOTEL Maribor UNI Hostel

Izola (on the coast): Hostel Alieti

Bovec: Hostel Soča Rocks

Kranjska Gora: Youth Hostel Nika

Buses in Slovenia

Local buses in Slovenia are operated by Arriva. On some routes, Flixbus also runs services.

Arriva timetables are usually shown reliably on Google Maps. That said, don’t trust the information 100%. For the most accurate details, check the website of Arriva.

The site isn’t the most user-friendly, and the app didn’t work for us either. We recommend buying tickets in person at the bus station and checking timetables there as well.

Vignette & Toll Fees

Slovenia has a mandatory electronic vignette system on highways and expressways. It applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tons.

You can purchase the vignette online at evinjeta.dars. Note that you can only buy a weekly vignette, a monthly vignette, or longer-duration options.

The weekly vignette for a passenger car costs 16 euros, for example.

You can also avoid highways and expressways entirely and pay nothing, but you’ll need to allow more time for your drives.

Note: Additional tolls apply for the Karawanken Tunnel, which connects Austria and Slovenia. These can be paid on-site.

Best Time to Visit for a Slovenia Road Trip

The best time for a Slovenia road trip is during the summer months from May to October. Depending on what you want to focus on, some months work better than others:

  • May and October: Perfect if you want to explore Slovenia without many tourists and in mild temperatures. Not ideal for swimming or hiking.
  • June and September: Our top pick! Warm weather, great conditions for hiking and swimming in the sea, and you avoid the peak season crowds.
  • July and August: Great if the crowds don’t bother you, or if your focus is on the Slovenian coast or the high Alpine peaks.

We only recommend the winter months for winter sports enthusiasts and skiers. The ski season runs roughly from mid-December to mid-March.
