Hiking in the Mountains

Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is one of the many great starting points for hiking in Slovenia

What do you need to know? Slovenia is a fantastic destination for hiking fans. You can look forward to towering mountains, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and stunning waterfalls. From easy trails to summit hikes and long-distance routes, it has it all — and with far fewer crowds than the Dolomites in Italy or Austria.

Where in Slovenia? Triglav National Park and the Logar Valley are the places to be if you’re a serious hiking fan. The shepherd settlement of Velika Planina and the Vintgar Gorge are especially well suited for beginners.

Keep in mind: Brown bears are native to Slovenia. Running into one while hiking is unlikely, but you should still be prepared. In our article on safety in Slovenia, we share important tips about bears.

Exploring by Bike

What do you need to know? Traveling by bike is still a real under-the-radar choice for Slovenia. We spent ten days exploring the country by bicycle and absolutely loved it. Throughout Slovenia you’ll find beautiful routes along lightly trafficked country roads and campgrounds where you’ll meet other cycle tourists. Around Ljubljana, Lake Bled, and along Slovenia’s coastline near Piran, there are well-developed bike paths.

Where in Slovenia? Everywhere! Keep in mind, though, that Slovenia is very mountainous — cycling is only a great idea if you’re in decent shape. Of course, you can always rent an e-bike instead.

Our tip: One of our favorite cycling routes follows the Soča River. The views along the way are seriously stunning.

Skiing in Winter

In winter, Slovenia’s mountains transform into a snowy paradise

What do you need to know? There’s no shortage of things to do in Slovenia in winter — the country has a great number of ski resorts, and skiing here is noticeably cheaper than in Austria or Italy. The ski season typically runs from December through March or April.

Where in Slovenia? Popular resorts include Mariborsko Pohorje near Maribor, Krvavec near Ljubljana, and Vogel near Kranjska Gora.

Our tip: Slovenia in winter is worth it even if you don’t ski. Lake Bled looks absolutely magical under snow, and Ljubljana hosts a lovely Christmas market in December.

What do you need to know? Ziplines let you fly through Slovenia’s landscapes on a cable and take in incredible scenery from above — at a thrilling speed. For adrenaline junkies, this is one of the most exciting outdoor activities in Slovenia. If you’re afraid of heights, though, you might want to sit this one out.

Where in Slovenia? The Zipline Park at Učja Canyon near Bovec is truly awesome — it’s considered the longest zipline park in Europe, with ten cables ranging from 250 to 600 meters in length. You’ll also find ziplines at Lake Bled and near the border with Hungary.

Where in Slovenia? The most famous are the Postojna Caves, which stretch for 24 kilometers and even include a cave castle. Less touristy but equally impressive is Škocjan Caves Park.

Our tip: Visiting the caves is also a fantastic outing for families with children.

What do you need to know? Slovenia has several wine regions that are still relatively unknown and refreshingly crowd-free. You can visit wineries and join wine tastings, and we’d really recommend booking a guided wine tour — it’s the best way to learn about the country’s wine culture while you sip.

Where in Slovenia? The Vipava Valley, nestled between the Mediterranean and the Alps, is especially popular. You can also book a tour there directly from Ljubljana.
