Palermo's Beach

Mondello

  • Perfect for: Nightlife, sightseeing, strolling
  • Best time to visit: June, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 20 minutes, Catania 3 hours

Most city beaches aren’t all that great — but Palermo‘s beach actually is! That might have something to do with the fact that Mondello sits about 20 minutes outside the city.

The beach stretches 1.5 kilometers, there’s a palm-lined promenade, and colorful Art Nouveau villas dot the area — quite a contrast to what you’d expect from Palermo’s old town.

The water is turquoise and crystal clear, and you’ll need to wade quite a few steps before it gets deep. That makes Mondello a really great spot for a beach vacation with young kids.

The one downside: almost the entire beach requires paid access, meaning you’ll pay for an umbrella and a lounge chair. On the upside, it’s well maintained and there are restrooms and changing cabins.

Advantages of staying in Mondello

  • Beautiful beach with umbrella rentals, showers, and changing cabins
  • Plenty of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs around the beach
  • A direct city bus gets you into downtown Palermo in 30 minutes

Disadvantages of staying in Mondello

  • Very crowded in July and August
  • Almost the entire beach requires paid access
  • An umbrella with two lounge chairs costs around 25 euros per day, depending on the rental and season

Marina and Upscale Restaurants

Cefalù

  • Perfect for: Nightlife, sightseeing, snorkeling
  • Best time to visit: June, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 1 hour, Catania 2.5 hours

Calling Cefalù just a fishing village would be a serious understatement.

Cefalù is small, but it has a stunning medieval old town with a cathedral and a castle, plenty of small restaurants, a museum, and a 1.5-kilometer-long sandy beach. The water is crystal clear and only gets deep gradually.

What makes the beach especially beautiful is that the medieval historic center begins right at its edge, with some of the old buildings built directly on the waterfront.

Cefalù has a bit of a reputation in Italy as a jet-set vacation spot, and many well-heeled Italians as well as international visitors arrive by yacht. As a result, accommodation prices here tend to run a bit higher than in other Sicilian beach towns, especially in summer.

Advantages of staying in Cefalù

  • You can combine a beach vacation with sightseeing
  • Plenty of bars, restaurants, and entertainment options
  • Easy to reach from Palermo by train

Disadvantages of staying in Cefalù

  • Gets very crowded in July and August
  • A rented umbrella and two lounge chairs costs around 30 euros per day
  • Vendors on the beach will approach you repeatedly

Unspoiled and Relaxed

Tindari

  • Perfect for: Relaxing, snorkeling, hiking
  • Best time to visit: June, July, August, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 2.5 hours, Catania 2 hours

Tindari is a small town near Messina on Sicily’s northern coast. It sits right on the edge of the Marinello Nature Reserve, where a huge sandbar stretches far out into the sea.

The sandbar is also referred to as a lagoon because it forms several small salt lakes. The water is crystal clear, and if you walk far enough along the sandbar, you can find your own private patch of beach even in the height of summer.

Steep mountains surround the sandbar at Tindari, making it a great spot for hiking too. High above the coastline sits a pilgrimage church that offers a spectacular panorama of the sea.

Advantages of staying in Tindari

  • It never gets too crowded
  • Wonderful snorkeling
  • You can reach Tindari by train from Palermo

Disadvantages of staying in Tindari

  • Only a small selection of accommodations, very few hotels
  • Hardly any places to stay directly on the beach
  • Outside of peak season, there isn’t much going on

It’s not huge, but it’s clean and the water is crystal clear with beautiful shades of blue and fine sand.

Eraclea Minoa is an archaeological site on Sicily’s southern coast, where a Greek settlement of the same name once stood.

Below the cliff — which is slightly reminiscent of the chalk cliffs of Rügen — stretches the kilometer-long sandy beach of Eraclea Minoa.

Island Getaway

Favignana

  • Perfect for: Snorkeling, diving, relaxing
  • Best time to visit: June, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 2 hours, Catania 5.5 hours

Favignana is a small, quintessentially Mediterranean dream island off the western coast of Sicily.

It belongs to the Aegadian Islands and you can reach it from the port of Trapani in 20 minutes by ferry.

The island is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy: the coves are small and narrow, but the water is simply gorgeous — crystal clear and teeming with fish.

There’s no sign of party tourism here: the small town of Favignana has just a handful of restaurants and boutiques and a small harbor.

You can easily reach all of the island’s beaches by rental bike from the only town — cars are practically nonexistent.

Our tip: Visit Favignana only in the off-season. During peak season it gets so crowded that, given the size of the island and its beaches, it’s simply not worth it.
Advantages of staying on Favignana

  • All the beaches are beautiful and perfect for snorkeling
  • The island is very clean
  • No party tourism — just a few restaurants, pizzerias, and small bars

Disadvantages of staying on Favignana

  • After midnight there’s virtually nothing going on
  • The beaches are small and fill up quickly
  • Accommodations are a bit pricier

San Vito Lo Capo

  • Perfect for: Snorkeling, relaxing
  • Best time to visit: June, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 1 hour, Catania 4.5 hours

San Vito Lo Capo is a quintessential Italian beach resort: the small town on the northern coast is always buzzing in summer and offers plenty of accommodations, restaurants, and boutiques.

The beach at San Vito Lo Capo is widely considered the most beautiful in Sicily. And it truly is a dream beach: wide, with scattered palm trees, white sand, and very shallow, crystal-clear water.

Right next to the beach, Monte Monaco towers overhead, giving the whole scene a hint of Copacabana.

The beach has both paid sections where you can rent an umbrella and lounge chairs, and free sections.

The town of San Vito lo Capo wraps around the beach with many small bars, restaurants, and shopping options.

Advantages of staying in San Vito Lo Capo

Next to the Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve

Scopello

  • Perfect for: Snorkeling, diving, relaxing, hiking
  • Best time to visit: June, September
  • Distance to airport: Palermo 45 minutes, Catania 4 hours

The small fishing village of Scopello is well known throughout Italy and particularly famous for its stunning coastline.

Near Scopello begins the Riserva dello Zingaro nature reserve, where you can go mountain hiking and swim in the sea.

Almost everywhere the coastline is rugged, with cliffs dropping steeply into crystal-clear water. But there are a handful of small coves that are perfect for snorkeling and diving.

The most famous is the cove of the Tonnara di Scopello: right at the water’s edge stands the ruin of a former tuna factory.

Beach access is on a concrete surface and costs 7 euros for the whole day. Concrete might not sound appealing, but the cove is absolutely worth seeing.

General Hotel Tips for Sicily

Here are a few more useful pointers to help you find the right hotel for your beach vacation in Sicily.

Which Part of Sicily's Coastline Should You Book Your Hotel On?

Sicily is large, and it can take several hours by car to get from one coast to another. Unless you’re specifically planning a road trip around the island, think carefully about where you want to base yourself.

For first-time visitors to Sicily who don’t just want to lie on the beach but also want to see some sights, we’d suggest a hotel on the northern coast. There you’ll find beautiful beaches alongside highlights like Palermo and Cefalù, or the Lo Zingaro nature reserve. You can also get around the northern coast quite easily by regional train.

If you have more time and prefer unspoiled beaches without a lot of tourist infrastructure, head to the southern coast. The drive from the airports is longer, but it’s much less crowded and far less touristy during peak season than the north.

How Much Does a Hotel in Sicily Cost?

July and August are peak season in Sicily. In popular beach towns like San Vito Lo Capo or Cefalù, a hotel room can run around 150 to 200 euros per night.

You’ll find cheaper rates on the southern coast. Along the beaches between Marsala and Syracuse, you can find lodging for around 100 euros — though vacation rentals are far more common than hotels here.

You’ll also definitely need a rental car in the south, as the rail network along the southern coast isn’t as well developed.

For finding the best rental car deal, we like to use compare rental car deals on Discovercars.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Beach Hotel in Sicily?

Because the number of Sicily beach hotels is limited, the rule is simple: the earlier you book, the better.

If you’re heading to Sicily during peak season and want a good hotel near the beach, book at least three months in advance. Prices won’t necessarily be lower, but you’ll still find available rooms.

If you’re traveling in the off-season, booking a month ahead is usually fine. The best deals, however, come when you book very last-minute during the off-season — say, a week ahead. That’s when you can sometimes snag a room at a luxury hotel for a great price.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sicily for a Beach Vacation?

In July and August, Sicily isn’t just crowded — it’s also scorching hot. Daytime temperatures of 40°C (104°F) are the norm. If you want to explore a few cities as well, that kind of heat makes it pretty uncomfortable.

That’s why it’s better to plan your beach vacation in June or September. There are far fewer tourists on the island, accommodation prices are lower, and you still get perfect beach weather.
