Flying to San Diego via Los Angeles
Sometimes flying into LAX in Los Angeles is cheaper. That works well if you’re renting a car anyway — the two cities are about two hours apart by car. Just keep in mind: if you don’t want to pay a one-way drop-off fee, you’ll need to return the car in Los Angeles.
Getting from San Diego Airport to the City Center
Great news: San Diego’s airport is right in the city. To reach Downtown, hop on bus line 992 — you’ll be there in about 20 minutes.
For Old Town, take line 20 instead. That’s closer to an hour, so factor in the extra time.
When is the best time to visit San Diego?
For a beach vacation, June through August is peak season — warm, sunny, and reliably great.
If sightseeing is your main focus, spring and fall are actually better. Months like May, September, and October mean fewer crowds, lower hotel prices, and cheaper flights.
Those months are also perfect if you’re doing a road trip through the western United States and want to explore the national parks on the US West Coast.
Is San Diego expensive?
San Diego is definitely one of the pricier cities in the USA — costs are high across the board.
That said, prices vary a lot by neighborhood. The Gaslamp Quarter has more affordable accommodation options, while Coronado is almost exclusively luxury hotels.
Is San Diego safe?
Yes — San Diego is actually one of the safest major cities in the US.
Due to its proximity to Mexico, drugs do play a role in some areas, but as a tourist you’re very unlikely to notice it. As in any big city, keep an eye on your belongings in crowded spots, and you’ll be absolutely fine.
