What Is a Riad?
Riads are traditional Moroccan houses located right in the heart of city medinas. You’ll find them especially in Fès or Marrakech, but also in Essaouira or Rabat. The design is authentically Moroccan and genuinely beautiful. They are essentially the Fès boutique hotels.
The defining feature of a riad is its inner courtyard. It stays pleasantly cool even in summer, and the hustle of the medina feels worlds away.
Riads are rather small and have only a few rooms — which makes them wonderfully intimate. But they fill up fast! So if you find one you like, book your riad in Fès quickly.
Why stay in a riad in Fès?
- You’ll be staying in a traditionally Moroccan home, giving you a direct glimpse into the country’s history and culture.
- Riads are usually small accommodations — wonderfully intimate, private, quiet, and with personalized service.
- The owners are often Europeans or well-off Moroccans. You’ll frequently get really great insider tips.
- Riads are right in the medina, the perfect neighborhood to stay in Fès. From here you’re just a short walk from all the main sights.
- Riads in Fès are on average more affordable than riads in Marrakech.
Note: On winter nights, rooms can get chilly. When booking, make sure to check whether the riad has heating if you tend to get cold easily. The same goes for air conditioning in summer. Not all riads have both.
