In a nutshell

  • Beer in Prague is, just like the city itself, seriously affordable — often cheaper than anywhere else in Europe.
  • Prague has more than 30 breweries. The largest and most well-known is Staropramen, but the craft scene is thriving too.
  • Just drinking beer isn’t enough? Prague also has beer tours, a beer spa, a beer museum, and even a hotel with a beer tap in the room.
  • We’ve pulled together everything you need to know about beer in Prague — from the best breweries to the coolest bars. Let’s get into it!

What Does a Beer Cost in Prague?

Beer in Prague is generally pretty affordable — cheaper than in Germany. At the supermarket, you can often pick up a 0.5-liter bottle for as little as 20 CZK (80 cents), and at bars outside the city center you can get a half-liter on tap for around 35 CZK (€1.40).

As with all popular city trip destinations, prices in the center are considerably higher. There, a half-liter can run up to 100 CZK (€4).

Compared to many other European capitals, though, that’s still seriously reasonable.

Fun fact: In some Prague supermarkets, beer is actually cheaper than water.

Best Breweries in Prague

Prague has more than 30 breweries. From small craft beer operations to massive industrial breweries, there’s a huge range to explore. Here’s a selection of Prague breweries worth knowing about.

Staropramen

Staropramen is the most famous Prague beer and the city’s largest brewery. Staropramen Lager is served all over the world.

But there are also other, lesser-known varieties — like the dark Staropramen Černý Ležák or the ruby-red Staropramen Granat.

You can visit the Staropramen brewery on a guided tour. An audio guide walks you through the brewery’s history and the beer-making process.

At the end, there’s of course a tasting — four different beers in total. You can also add a food pairing if you want.

Strahov Monastery Brewery

Beer has been brewed at Strahov Monastery for more than 600 years. After the brewery closed in 1907, the tradition was revived in 2001.

Today, the monastery brewery produces a variety of beers, including some seasonal varieties, which you can sample in its own beer garden or in one of the three on-site restaurants.

Strahov Monastery is one of the most beautiful sights in Prague anyway — and from the beer garden, you get a wonderful panorama over the city.

Jihoměstský Pivovar

Jihoměstský Pivovar is a relatively young brewery, having only opened in 2010. It’s located in the far south of Prague and was built inside a former boiler room.

We’d recommend it if you’re in the mood for something different. They offer some unusual varieties, like wheat beer with raspberry. The brewery also has a restaurant serving traditional Czech cuisine.

Únětický Pivovar

A historic brewery that has reportedly been around since 1710. Operations were suspended at some point, and it reopened in its new glory only in 2011. You’ll find their beers in many Prague bars and, of course, in the brewery’s own restaurant.

One thing we really love: the brewery has its own currency, the Unetice Ounce. Buy one, and on your next visit you’ll get your beer at the same price regardless of inflation.

Beer Spa Prague

A beer spa? Come again? Yes, it’s a real thing! At Prague’s beer spa, you can soak in a hot beer bath and even book a beer massage on top of it.

Beer baths are actually a long-standing Bohemian tradition. The high vitamin B content and enzymes in beer stimulate your metabolism and are great for your skin, muscles, and joints. Of course, there’s a bit more to it than just filling a tub — the bath needs to be at a specific temperature and contain the right dose of medicinal herbs.

The treatment lasts about an hour and you get a private room all to yourself. Afterward, you can relax on a heated lounger — with unlimited beer on the side.

The Prague Beer Museum

Of course, no Prague beer guide would be complete without a beer museum.

Here you can not only explore a huge range of beer varieties, but also learn how Czech beer and malt are produced. A visit naturally includes a tasting of four different beers.

At the end, you even get to try your hand at bottling beer yourself and take the bottle home with your own custom label — a fun souvenir.

By the way, with the Prague Card, you get 30 percent off admission to the beer museum.

Beer Hotel Prague

A beer spa and a beer museum still not enough for you? We’ll raise you one more — because Prague even has a beer hotel, a truly one-of-a-kind place to stay in Prague!

The U Medvídků Hotel is part of the brewpub of the same name and is, at first glance, a perfectly normal hotel. But there’s one room with an absolutely unique feature.

In the so-called Superior Bierstube, alongside the regular water tap you’ll find a beer tap — and yes, real beer actually comes out of it. And the best part: the beer is included in the room rate.

The room books out well in advance, but maybe you’ll get lucky. On the hotel’s official website it’s called “Superior Bierstube”; on Booking.com it’s listed as “Exclusive Beer Room.”

Prague has a huge number of bars, pubs, and beer gardens. Here are our top picks for the best beer gardens and beer cellars in Prague.

  • Beer Garden in Letná Park: The most beautiful beer garden in Prague, right in front of the lovely Letná Chateau and surrounded by shady trees. The views over the city from here are fantastic.
  • Hospudka Na Hradbách: A cozy beer garden in Vyšehrad. They serve great BBQ with vegetarian options too. The Old Town panorama is especially stunning at sunset.
  • U Fleků: One of the most iconic spots in Prague. With a history spanning more than 500 years, it’s one of the oldest breweries in the Czech Republic. Absolutely worth a stop on your visit to Prague.
  • U Medvídků: Best known for the strongest beer in the Czech Republic — the X-Beer33, which clocks in at a whopping 11.8% alcohol. Despite being very popular with tourists, it still has real traditional charm.
  • Zlý časy: A so-called beerothek with 48 taps. Perfect if you want to work your way through the full range of Czech beers.
  • Loď Pivovar: Probably the only brewery on a boat. Spread across two decks, it serves three of its own beers among others. From the Stefánikuv Bridge you can even see Prague Castle.
  • U Glaubicu: A 700-year-old Romanesque beer cellar with beautiful arcades. Meat lovers will be in their element here.
  • U Dvou Koček: A simple, old-school pub where you’ll mostly run into locals. Nothing fancy — but you get authentic Prague beer, honest food, and a genuinely cozy atmosphere.

Pour Your Own Beer in Prague: The PUB

If you’re not in the mood for a regular beer garden or beer cellar, there’s also The PUB. It’s a bar chain that can also be found in Berlin and Vienna, where every table has its own tap.

You order food via tablets and can track exactly how much beer your table has poured. It’s a really fun concept and a popular first stop before a longer night out.

There are three locations of The PUB in Prague, in Praha 1, 2, and 6.
