In a nutshell

  • Due to renovation work, Tour Montparnasse will be closed for four years starting in April 2026!
  • Tour Montparnasse is a popular alternative observation tower in Paris — from up here you get an unobstructed view of the entire city, including the Eiffel Tower.
  • Beyond the outdoor observation deck, the tower has interactive exhibits that show how Paris has changed over the decades — super fun, especially with kids.
  • We recommend buying your Tour Montparnasse tickets online — they’re cheaper there than at the door.
  • If you have extra time, explore the neighborhood around the tower. There are some really great restaurants and a handful of lesser-known highlights worth discovering.

What is the Tour Montparnasse?

The Tour Montparnasse sits in the Montparnasse neighborhood and, at 210 meters, is the highest viewpoint in southern Paris.

The building is actually an office tower from the 1970s. The 56th floor and the observation deck are open to visitors.

And by the way: an expansion of the building is being discussed. The tower is slated to be renovated and raised by several floors by 2028, reaching a height of 230 meters after the renovation. Nothing has been finalized yet, though, and the tower remains open to visitors.

What can you see and do at the Tour Montparnasse?

80 percent of the tower is unremarkable office space. But the other 20 percent is seriously cool and includes

  • an outdoor observation deck (59th floor),
  • an indoor panoramic viewing area (56th floor),
  • the conservatory with interactive exhibits (56th floor)
  • and a champagne bar (56th floor)

On top of that, the Montparnasse Tower has one of the fastest elevators in Europe. It whisks you up 56 floors in just under 40 seconds. Incredible!

The interactive exhibits in the indoor conservatory include orientation panels, binoculars, photo series, and some really cool 3D glasses that let you see how Paris has changed over the years.

That’s especially worth knowing if you’re visiting Paris with children — it’s a great way to get them excited about the tower. But honestly, it’s a lot of fun for adults too.

Tour Montparnasse Views

The real highlight, of course, is the panorama of Paris from the Tour Montparnasse. On clear days, you can see up to 40 kilometers in every direction.

The height of the observation deck roughly corresponds to the level halfway between the second and third floors of the Eiffel Tower.

You get a fantastic view of the Eiffel Tower from up here. You can also put your sense of direction to the test and spot Montmartre and the Sacré-Cœur, the Arc de Triomphe, and even Notre-Dame Cathedral.

The view is completely unobstructed. The only thing between you and the vista is a glass facade that barely shows up in photos. Maybe you’ll even spot your Paris hotel from up there?

Visiting the Tour Montparnasse: Info & Tips

To make sure your visit to the Montparnasse Tower goes smoothly, here are a few tips and useful details:

Where is the Tour Montparnasse located?

The Tour Montparnasse is in the southern part of central Paris, in the neighborhood of the same name: Montparnasse. It’s not far from the lovely Latin Quarter.

The exact address is: 33 Av. du Maine, 75015 Paris

How do you get to the Tour Montparnasse?

The easiest way to reach the tower is by taking the Paris Métro. The nearest station is Montparnasse-Bienvenüe, served by metro lines 4, 6, 12, and 13.

Important: The entrance is a bit hidden — we had to hunt for it ourselves. You’ll find it on the west side of the tower. Head up the stairs where you see the sign that reads “Visite Panoramique.”

  • From April 1 to September 30: daily from 9:30 AM to 11:30 PM.
  • From October 1 to March 31: Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 PM, and Friday, Saturday, and the eve of public holidays until 11:00 PM.

Tour Montparnasse Wait Times & Best Times to Visit

The Tour Montparnasse is not a heavily visited attraction. You won’t have to deal with long wait times — either outside or inside.

Crowd levels don’t really factor into choosing when to go. Instead, let the weather guide your plans. On clear days, you’ll have the best views from the tower. And the most beautiful time of all is at sunset.

Is the Tour Montparnasse accessible?

Unfortunately, the tower is not fully accessible. The elevator takes you to the 56th floor, but from there you’ll need to climb stairs to reach the observation deck — that’s another three floors up.

Tour Montparnasse in Paris: Our Experience

The Tour Montparnasse sits a little outside the main tourist circuit. Most visitors never make their way here — even though the Paris Catacombs are just a short walk away. You could easily combine both in one trip.

Wait times at the tower are very short, there’s plenty of space, and you can explore, take in the view, and read everything at your own pace without any stress.

At around 20 euros, though, the tickets are on the pricier side. You can actually find cheaper tickets for the Eiffel Tower.

And of course, the Tour Montparnasse isn’t trying to compete with the world-famous Eiffel Tower. We’d describe it more as a cool alternative — one we’d recommend if you’ve already been to the Eiffel Tower and are looking for a different top-notch vantage point over Paris.

Exploring the Neighborhood Around the Tour Montparnasse

The Montparnasse neighborhood is perfect if you want to experience Paris beyond the well-known city center.

The area isn’t the prettiest part of the city, but there are still some worthwhile spots to check out — plus plenty of great restaurants.

Other Places Worth Seeing in Montparnasse

  • Jardin du Luxembourg: A large, absolutely beautiful park. Technically it’s in the Odéon neighborhood, but that borders Montparnasse and the walk makes for a perfect stroll.
  • Montparnasse Cemetery: The Cimetière Montparnasse is almost like a smaller version of Père Lachaise. It features truly impressive mausoleums and large gravestones with statues.
  • Notre-Dame-du-Travail: This church is near Montparnasse station. From the outside it looks rather plain, especially compared to Paris’s other churches — but inside you’ll find a really distinctive iron and steel structure.
  • Bourdelle Museum: Antoine Bourdelle was a French sculptor and painter who lived in Montparnasse. His former home is now open to visitors as a museum showcasing many of his works. Admission costs 8 euros.
