What Is the Canal Saint-Martin?

The Canal Saint-Martin is a 4-mile-long waterway that flows through the 10th arrondissement in the northeastern center of Paris.

Built during Napoleon’s era, the canal was once a vital trade route in and around the city. Today it’s the perfect place to experience truly authentic Paris.

Very few tourists make their way here. Instead, as soon as the first rays of spring sunshine appear, Parisians sit along the canal banks day after day, chatting, listening to music, and drinking wine.

Instead of famous landmarks, you’ll find cool galleries, bookstores, and small sidewalk cafés — and, almost as an afterthought, one of the best ice cream shops we’ve ever tried.

If you can say this about any place in Paris, the vibe here is pure dolce vita, French style.

How Do You Get to Canal Saint-Martin?

The easiest way to reach Canal Saint-Martin is on foot from the République metro station — it’s less than a five-minute walk.

While you’re there, it’s worth checking out the famous Place de la République — a historically significant square featuring a large monument to the Republic.

Our tip: If you’re traveling with kids, there’s also a playground and a café here. Perfect for a break from sightseeing.

What Can You Do at Canal Saint-Martin?

Experience authentic Paris

The canal is truly idyllic
The canal is truly idyllic

The center of Paris and the areas around the city’s famous attractions are always packed.

Here at Canal Saint-Martin, you can truly unwind and let the quintessentially French way of life sweep you along. Art, books, wine, food, and great coffee are right around every corner.

And unlike the artists’ quarter of Montmartre, the neighborhood around Canal Saint-Martin is not geared toward tourists. You’ll mostly meet genuine Parisians — and even many of the menus in cafés and restaurants are in French rather than English.

Eat and drink really well

Sucre Glace offers unique ice cream flavors
Sucre Glace offers unique ice cream flavors

We already hinted at it: the food scene at Canal Saint-Martin is genuinely great. Whether you’re after a small snack or a full, hot meal — the options are plentiful and good.

Our absolute favorite is the ice cream shop Sucre Glace. In addition to chocolate ice cream, you’ll find flavors like fig, lemon with basil, and apricot with rosemary. Unusual, but absolutely delicious!

The best coffee at Canal Saint-Martin is at Residence Kann Coffee. It doesn’t get much cooler or hipper than this.

For a bigger appetite, we recommend Street Bangkok and al assil Libanese. Al assil isn’t anything wildly special, but the value for money is incredible — and in this case, the super-friendly staff makes all the difference.

Shop for something different

If you feel like doing some shopping, Canal Saint-Martin has a handful of cool, alternative stores worth checking out.

We’re really into Bonjour Jacob — a shop where you can find art, books, and coffee. What a dream combination.

For clothing, we recommend Maison Standards. Personal, old-school customer service is still a priority here. Très Parisien, ha.

Browse art galleries

Artazart Gallery

If you’re not just looking to shop but want to truly browse, the small art galleries along Canal Saint-Martin are a wonderful destination.

We especially love Galerie Artazart. Here you’ll find illustrated postcards, art books, and contemporary art prints — including works by lesser-known Parisian artists. Super cool.

Take photos at the rainbow crosswalk

Rainbow crosswalk
The rainbow crosswalk at Canal Saint-Martin is a great photo spot

At the corner of Rue de Marseille and Quai de Vamly, you’ll find the rainbow crosswalk.

Since the 2018 Paris Pride, the crosswalk has been decorated this way — and there’s a meaningful story behind it.

The colorful stripes were actually supposed to be removed after Paris Pride. But when homophobic vandals painted over the rainbow out of hatred, Mayor Anne Hidalgo decided the stripes would stay permanently.

In doing so, she sent an enormously powerful message — and incidentally created another popular photo spot in Paris.

Combine it with a visit to the Atelier des Lumières

L'Atelier des Lumières is stunning
L’Atelier des Lumières is stunning

Southeast of Canal Saint-Martin lies L’Atelier des Lumières — a museum with immersive exhibitions and one of the most exciting museums in Paris, in our opinion.

In a former iron foundry, theme-based projections are beamed onto the walls. The themes rotate regularly — from Van Gogh to Monet to the cosmos and dinosaurs, there’s always something cool to see.

If you’re already exploring the east side of Paris, a visit here is absolutely worth it.

Combine it with a visit to Père Lachaise

A guided tour of the cemetery is super interesting

Also southeast of Canal Saint-Martin is the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery — one of our favorite sightseeing spots outside the center of Paris.

Père Lachaise is no ordinary large cemetery; it’s one of the most famous and most beautiful cemeteries in the world. Celebrities such as Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Frédéric Chopin are buried here.

Expect ancient, ornate mausoleums, statues, grand tombstones, and beautiful tree-lined avenues. A fascinating place for a stroll.

Stroll through Parc des Buttes-Chaumont

Buttes-Chaumont is a truly beautiful park
Buttes-Chaumont is a truly beautiful park

Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, west of Canal Saint-Martin, is a true under-the-radar gem in Paris.

At 62 acres, the park is anything but small — yet very few tourists know about it. With waterfalls, grottos, and a temple, it makes for a wonderful change of pace from the city’s hustle and bustle.

And from the park’s highest points, you’ll have a stunning panorama over Paris.

Explore the La Villette district

La Villette is worth a visit too
La Villette near Canal Saint-Martin is worth a visit too

La Villette is a cultural park north of Canal Saint-Martin where everything revolves around modern science and futuristic architecture.

In the glass building Cité des Sciences, you can explore the permanent exhibition Explora across three floors and learn a great deal about communication, energy, medicine, aviation, the oceans, and Earth’s resources.

And inside the shell of a giant steel sphere hides the spherical cinema La Géode. During the day, the sphere reflects the sky and the park; at night, it synthesizes its own starry sky.

You can also experience Canal Saint-Martin and the beautiful surrounding area directly from the water — on a boat tour along the Parisian canals.

The trip starts near the Musée d’Orsay in the city center on the Seine. From there, you’ll cruise for two and a half hours along the Seine, downstream past Notre-Dame, through the smaller canals and nine locks. The endpoint is Parc de la Villette.
