New Year's Eve Destinations in Germany

In Germany there are some seriously great places to celebrate New Year’s Eve — whatever kind of traveler you are. Here are our personal favorites.

Germany

Hamburg

Fireworks at the Port of Hamburg
The fireworks at the Port of Hamburg are one of the coolest things you can watch on New Year’s Eve in Germany

Perfect for: Party-goers and fireworks fans

Hamburg is one of the best new year’s eve destinations in Germany. A fantastic fireworks display lights up the Port of Hamburg every year, and right in the middle of it all you can hear the signal horns of the ships in the harbor. Stands selling sparkling wine and bratwurst are set up all around the waterfront, and music is playing everywhere.

By the way, in 2025 the famous New Year’s Eve party that used to be at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin has moved to Hamburg. So you can count on one seriously good celebration here.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? The best spots to watch the fireworks at the Port of Hamburg are the Docklands or from a boat. If you don’t mind crowds, the Landungsbrücken is also worth keeping in mind. The view is great and you’re right at the water — just be prepared for a lot of people.

Our hotel pick: 25hours Hotel

Germany

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Winter night in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen looks absolutely beautiful on winter nights

Perfect for: Active travelers and snow lovers

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is pretty much the complete opposite of Hamburg. Instead of a boat tour through the harbor, you can spend the day here skiing, sledding, or snowshoeing. In the evening, you find a cozy spot and watch the fireworks over the mountains. Sounds amazing, right?

At night you can snuggle up in a mountain hut, and the next day you can catch the famous New Year’s ski jump at the Four Hills Tournament.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Either you keep it relaxed with a nice dinner at the Klammhaus at Partnachkamm, or you find yourself a lively New Year’s Eve party — like the one at the Bayernhalle with live music.

Our hotel pick: aja Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Harz

Harz in January
The Harz is perfect if you want to travel with the family over New Year’s and keep things low-key

Perfect for: Families and those seeking peace and quiet

Traveling with little kids and not in the mood for too much hustle and bustle? No problem. Your best bet is to head to the Harz and rent a cozy apartment.

The Harz doesn’t put on a spectacular fireworks display, and there are only a few big New Year’s Eve parties — which is actually perfect if you’re traveling with young children.

During the day you can go sledding, ice skating, or ride the Brocken railway together, then ring in the new year over a delicious raclette.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Host a cozy get-together with raclette and a fireplace. Or join a torchlight hike.

Destinations for City Trips on New Year's Eve

New Year’s Eve is the perfect excuse for a city break. Here’s where you can have a truly great celebration.

Italy

Rome

Fireworks at the Colosseum
Rome is perfect for a city trip and for staying warm during your New Year’s vacation

Perfect for: Culture lovers, music fans, and a classic city break
Rome is worth visiting any time of year, but on New Year’s Eve you experience it on a whole different level.

On the many piazzas and around historic churches, there’s free live music everywhere. It’s not too cold, and at midnight a big fireworks display lights up the city. Honestly, it’s amazing.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? If you love live music, head to the Piazza del Popolo — there are free concerts and a big fireworks display. If you just want to watch the fireworks, find a spot on the Gianicolo Hill. You’ll have a great view over the Circus Maximus and it’s a bit quieter. Either way, get there as early as possible.

Our hotel pick: Palazzo Lupardi

Great Britain

London

Perfect for: Party fans and a classic city break

New Year’s Eve in London is world-famous for the fireworks at the London Eye.

At the stroke of midnight, the Big Ben bell rings out and kicks off a dazzling light show with drone displays and music. The highlight is the massive fireworks display launched from the London Eye and the surrounding area — it’s guaranteed to blow you away.

The next day brings another highlight right away: the New Year’s Day Parade with 10,000 dancers, acrobats, musicians, and performers. And if you want the full experience, come a few days early and soak up the wonderful Christmas atmosphere.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? The best place is at the London Eye — you’ll need to buy a ticket in advance. Grab yours on the official website.

Budget-Friendly New Year's Eve Destinations

Not looking to spend a ton of money on your New Year’s trip? No problem — here are two budget-friendly spots where to celebrate New Year’s Eve without breaking the bank.

Hungary

Budapest

Fireworks in Budapest
From the hill behind the Chain Bridge you have a great view of the fireworks over Budapest

Perfect for: Budget travelers

In Budapest, New Year’s Eve is mainly celebrated with street parties and live music. Of course, there’s also a big fireworks display at midnight.

That said, don’t head out too early. On New Year’s Eve, it gets around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius at night in Budapest. We’d suggest aiming to arrive around 10 PM.

The most popular spot to watch the fireworks is the Chain Bridge. Larissa from our team watched them from a small hill just behind the Chain Bridge and loved it (see on Google Maps).

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? At the Chain Bridge — or if you prefer something a bit quieter, on the hill right behind it.

Our hotel pick: Bo33 Hotel Family & Suites

Malta

The Carmelite Church in Valletta is one of the most famous churches in Malta
Malta is one of the best budget-friendly New Year’s Eve destinations

Perfect for: Budget travelers and sun seekers

If you want to save money and still ring in the new year somewhere pleasant, Malta is a great choice. With temperatures between 13 and 14 degrees Celsius at night, it’s really quite mild — especially compared to northern Europe.

Malta is normally famous for its spectacular fireworks, but New Year’s Eve here tends to be more low-key than the main fireworks season from May to September. There is a display, just a smaller one. On the flip side, there’s great live music in the streets of Valletta.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? If you want to be in the middle of the action, Valletta is the place to be. At midnight, head to the Valletta Waterfront.

Our hotel pick: Sally Port Suites

Warm New Year's Eve Destinations in Europe

Not feeling a cold, rainy New Year’s Eve? Then here are two of our favorite warm new year travel destinations in Europe. Let’s go!

Portugal

Madeira

Fireworks in Funchal
On Madeira you can celebrate New Year’s Eve in the warmth

Perfect for: Fireworks fans and sun seekers
Madeira is known as the Island of Eternal Spring and is one of our top picks if you want to escape to somewhere warm in winter. Your chances of good weather on New Year’s Eve are therefore pretty solid.

And you definitely won’t miss out on fireworks. Madeira hosts one of the best fireworks displays in Europe on New Year’s Eve — it’s truly massive, and some of the launch stations are set up right on the water.

The best vantage point is the waterfront promenade in the Bay of Funchal. You’ll also find plenty of small food and drink stands here.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? We recommend the waterfront promenade in the Bay of Funchal. If you prefer something more laid-back, you can also watch the fireworks from the viewpoints at Monte and Pico do Barcelos.

Our hotel pick: Three House Hotel

Spanien

Andalusia

Fireworks in Málaga
Málaga hosts one of the biggest fireworks displays in Andalusia

Perfect for: Sun seekers
Andalusia is lovely and warm on New Year’s Eve too. During the day you’ll typically have around 16 degrees Celsius, and temperatures usually stay in double digits at night as well.

The nicest way to explore the region is on a road trip through Andalusia — and that works perfectly over New Year’s Eve, since many of the cities put on fireworks displays for the new year.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? We recommend Málaga if you want to party, and Granada if you prefer a more relaxed vibe.

Our hotel pick: Hotel Boutique Teatro Romano – one of the most beautiful hotels in Málaga

New Year's Eve Destinations with Guaranteed Snow

If you absolutely need snow for New Year’s Eve, here are two destinations where you’re virtually guaranteed to find it.

Finland

Lapland

Northern lights in Lapland
In Lapland, the northern lights provide a somewhat different kind of New Year’s Eve fireworks

Perfect for: Those seeking peace and quiet and snow lovers

How about celebrating New Year’s Eve in the official home of Santa Claus? That’s a pretty hard offer to turn down. So let’s head to Lapland!

New Year’s Eve here is totally calm and relaxed. Sit down with a glögi — a Finnish mulled wine — by a campfire and watch the northern lights instead of fireworks. It’s a really cool alternative to all the loud banging!

If you have a few extra days, definitely come up for the Christmas season too. It’s simply magical.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? We don’t have one specific recommendation here — just take it easy and make sure you don’t miss the northern lights if they appear that night. We’ll tell you how to photograph them best in this guide.

Our hotel pick: Cozy Guesthouse

Austria

Innsbruck

A ski resort near Innsbruck
In the mountains around Innsbruck you can ski during the day and celebrate New Year’s Eve in the city at night

Perfect for: Mountain lovers, skiers, and snow fans

The Alps give you the best chances of snow without having to travel far. And there’s a bonus: you can ski during the day and make the most of the snow, then head into Innsbruck for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in the evening.

In the old town and along the Inn River, several stages are set up in the days around New Year’s Eve. There’s live music, a New Year’s Eve celebration for kids, and light shows on historic buildings. The highlight is of course the fireworks on December 31st.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? We recommend the city center celebrations — the whole city comes together for live music, light shows, and a fireworks display.

Our hotel pick: Nala Individuellhotel

Long-Haul Destinations for New Year's Eve

New Year’s Eve isn’t just celebrated in a big way in Europe. New Year’s night is the perfect occasion for a long-haul trip. Here are two standout destinations.

USA

New York

Perfect for: Party-goers and New York lovers
New York is THE place for New Year’s Eve. The Ball Drop at Times Square is simply iconic — a massive party with live music from Lenny Kravitz and more. You probably don’t need us to tell you how incredible it is.

So instead, here’s what you actually need to know: Admission is free and you don’t need a ticket. If you want a good spot, get there between 11 AM and 12 PM. Keep in mind that once you’ve claimed your spot, you won’t be able to leave. Bundle up, use the restroom beforehand, and bring as much food and drink as fits in the permitted small bag.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Times Square, no question. If you’re already in New York for New Year’s Eve, the famous Ball Drop is an absolute must.

Our hotel pick: LIC Plaza Hotel

Australia

Sydney

Fireworks at the Sydney Opera House
Sydney is one of the most beautiful places to spend New Year’s Eve (© Kagenmi)

Perfect for: Fireworks fans and sun seekers
Sydney is one of the first cities in the world to ring in the new year — and what a way to do it. A spectacular fireworks display lights up the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, and the skyline.

There’s already a smaller family-friendly show at 9 PM, followed by the massive main display at midnight.

The cool thing about Sydney is that it’s the middle of summer in December. It’s warm enough to settle into your spot and enjoy a picnic from the afternoon onward — assuming you’re not at the most popular spots right by the Opera House or in The Rocks, where you’ll want to arrive even earlier.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? If you want to be near the Harbour Bridge, The Rocks is your best bet — there are food trucks and you can watch the fireworks right at the water. Alternatively, we love the Maccallum Pool in Cremorne Point: less crowded and a seriously great view.

Our hotel pick: YHA Sydney Harbour

Germany

Extra Tip for Dog Owners: Wangerland

Dyke lights in Wangerland

Perfect for: Dog owners, families, and those seeking peace and quiet

Last but not least, a New Year’s Eve destination for all dog owners.

In Wangerland on the North Sea, New Year’s Eve is celebrated a little differently. The area sits inside a national park where fireworks are prohibited.

Instead, people gather at the dyke at half past eleven and light oil lanterns, torches, and other lights they’ve brought with them at midnight. It’s become a truly lovely tradition — and the perfect low-key New Year’s Eve for your dog.

Where to celebrate New Year’s Eve? At the dyke. Be sure to bring a torch, lantern, or string of lights that you can light up at midnight.

Our hotel pick: Mee(h)rzeit am Wangermeer
