In a nutshell
- What many people overlook: Germany’s natural landscapes are seriously stunning! We’re sharing the 13 most beautiful nature destinations in Germany — from the North Sea coast to Lake Chiemsee.
- For each destination, we’ll tell you the best time to visit and give you a solid hotel recommendation so you don’t have to search from scratch.
- Our personal favorites are the Moselle, the North Sea, the Allgäu, and Saxon Switzerland — but honestly, every spot on this list is worth the trip.
Mosel

Admittedly, we’re probably a little biased. But alongside relaxed little towns like Jenny’s hometown of Traben-Trarbach, the Moselle also offers sweeping landscapes that are seriously perfect for hiking and cycling.
The picturesque vineyards along the river banks define the character of the region. Miles of cycling and hiking trails invite you to get out and explore. Ideally heading toward one of the beautiful medieval castles — or straight to the next winery for a glass of Riesling.
Add to that the special microclimate, which makes the Moselle one of the warmest regions in Germany. What could be better for spending time outdoors?
When is the best time to visit the Moselle?
The classic travel season runs from April to October. It’s especially lovely as an autumn destination in September, when wine festivals take place in various towns nearly every weekend.
In December, the region’s Christmas markets are well worth a visit. Otherwise, the Moselle is very quiet from November to March — some restaurants close entirely during this period. On the other hand, it’s a great time for relaxation and wellness, and hotel prices are often noticeably lower in winter.

The Chiemgau is hard to beat for diversity and abundance of species. You can go hiking and cycling, or discover the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee — all with an unparalleled Alpine panorama.

Few coastlines offer as much variety as the North Sea. On one side, white sandy beaches and miles of dunes; on the other, rugged cliffs with sweeping views into the distance.
Whether you want a relaxing beach vacation or prefer to actively explore by hiking or cycling — the North Sea has it all. And honestly, you don’t even have to choose.
When is the best time to visit the North Sea?

Deutsche Weinstraße

Did someone say wine? Oh yes! But the Deutsche Weinstraße has much more to offer than just a great glass.
Stretching nearly 85 kilometers through Rhineland-Palatinate, the Deutsche Weinstraße is Germany’s second-largest wine-growing region. And it’s not just grapes growing along this route — you’ll also find almond trees, figs, sweet chestnuts, and even exotic plants like kiwis and bananas. Not surprising given the wonderfully warm climate.
Nature lovers and wine enthusiasts are very much in their element here. This is genuinely one of the most underrated nature destinations in Germany.
When is the best time to visit the Deutsche Weinstraße?
The best travel season runs from early March, when the almond blossoms appear, through the end of October — when the wine festivals take place, the leaves turn golden, and alongside the wine you can enjoy delicious Flammkuchen.

The natural and cultural landscape invites you to hike and explore. The many valleys, such as the glacial cirque of Präg, offer beautiful views perfect for photography or simply soaking it all in. With more than 100 mountains and peaks, the Black Forest is also a popular winter sports destination and can be visited year-round.

Harz

As northern Germany’s largest mountain range, the Harz draws visitors year-round — whether for hiking in summer or winter sports in the snow.
The Harz beech forests aren’t just beautiful to explore — they also provide habitats for over 5,000 animal species. Harz National Park, with its visitor centers and information points, offers extensive insight into local wildlife and biodiversity. There’s really a lot to discover here.
The Brocken is probably the Harz’s most famous landmark. At 1,141 meters above sea level, it’s the highest point in the mountain range — and beyond the beautiful hiking trails, it’s also home to the romantic Brocken Railway, which gives you a completely different perspective on the landscape.
When is the best time to visit the Harz?
The best travel months are May through September, when rainfall is lowest and the weather is pleasantly warm.

Sächsische Schweiz

Far to the east on the border with the Czech Republic lies the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The German part of this mountain range is known as Saxon Switzerland, while the Czech side forms Bohemian Switzerland.
Saxon Switzerland is famous for its rugged rock formations and dramatic stone structures. Hikers love the area for its scenery and the views of the sandstone cliffs, while thrill-seekers will find it a true climber’s paradise. You’ll occasionally spot people “boofen” — that is, sleeping under a rock overhang — a longstanding tradition in Saxon Switzerland.
Saxon Switzerland also makes for an excellent day trip from Dresden.
When is the best time to visit Saxon Switzerland?
The best travel season is April through October — the most pleasant weather, the fewest rainy days, and the best conditions for climbing.
If you don’t mind hiking in colder temperatures, visiting from November onward means far fewer tourists and sometimes having the trails all to yourself. A great choice for anyone seeking real solitude.

Mecklenburgische Seenplatte

The Mecklenburg Lake District is a region in northeastern Germany defined by its abundance of lakes and 8 nature parks, most notably Müritz National Park. Named after the Müritz — Germany’s largest inland lake — the park has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2011 and is a paradise for hikers and cyclists.
But nature lovers aren’t the only ones with plenty to see here. Beyond the diverse wildlife — including white-tailed eagles, ospreys, the rare Eurasian bittern, and the occasional wolf pack — you’ll find the BÄRENWALD Müritz in nearby Stuer. As Western Europe’s largest bear sanctuary, it’s home to rescued brown bears living in a natural forest setting. Pretty fascinating, right?
When is the best time to visit the Mecklenburg Lake District?
The best travel season is between June and September — the most sunshine, and the ideal climate for a lazy day by one of the lakes.
Our hotel recommendation for the Mecklenburg Lake District: TUI BLUE Fleesensee

Lüneburger Heide

Next up, we’d like to recommend a place we once called home. The Lüneburg Heath is located in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony and, as the name suggests, is defined by its beautiful heathland.
During what locals call the fifth season, the landscape bursts into vivid purple when the heather blooms. For photographers and nature lovers, a trip here is absolutely not to be missed. In the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve, you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the great outdoors in a car-free zone equally beloved by hikers and cyclists.
By the way, the Lüneburg Heath fits perfectly into a road trip through Germany.
When is the best time to visit the Lüneburg Heath?
An old rule of thumb says the heather blooms from August 8th through September 9th. We’re pretty sure you’ll still catch a bloom or two on August 7th and September 10th, though. So roughly speaking, count on the heather bloom from late July through mid-September.
That said, the Lüneburg Heath is worth visiting in other months too. In spring, budding trees, wildflowers, and diverse wildlife draw visitors to the nature parks, while in autumn the foliage blazes red and yellow.
September and October are also known for the rutting season of the red deer. The Wildpark Lüneburger Heide is well worth a visit at this time of year.
Our hotel recommendation for the Lüneburg Heath: Landhaus Haverbeckhof

What makes Bavarian Forest National Park so special is its pristine, untouched character — human intervention in the natural cycle is kept to an absolute minimum. That’s exactly why it earns its place on our list of Germany’s best natural places to visit.
The Fichtelgebirge isn’t far from the Bavarian Forest either — definitely worth a detour if you’re already in the area.
When is the best time to visit the Bavarian Forest?
The best travel season is between April and October, when you can spend lots of time outdoors and experience nature at its finest.
For a winter setting, the Bavarian Forest between November and February offers all kinds of winter sports fun — beautifully snow-covered and genuinely romantic.
