In a nutshell

  • Getting from Naples Airport to the city center is easy — you can take the shuttle bus or a taxi.
  • The airport shuttle bus is called the Alibus. It stops at the airport, the main train station, and the port. Fair warning: it’s often very crowded.
  • The taxi is the more comfortable option — and honestly not expensive, especially if you share.
  • Heading somewhere else, like Sorrento or Ischia? You can also take the ferry or book a direct shuttle bus.

What You Need to Know About Naples Airport

  • The Naples-Capodichino Airport (NAP) is located about 4 km east of Naples. By taxi or shuttle bus, you’ll be in the city in around 15 minutes.
  • There is only one terminal, so the airport is super easy to navigate.
  • Because it’s one of the busiest airports in southern Italy, it can get really crowded. We even had to wait a long time at security at 5 in the morning — so make sure to plan ahead.
  • The airport is clean and modern, with plenty of shops and restaurants. The Wi-Fi works well too.

When it comes to getting from Naples Airport to the city center, you really only have two options: taxi or shuttle bus. The airport isn’t connected to the rail network.

The Best Option: Taxi

Especially during peak season, a taxi is the best way to get from Naples Airport into the city. There’s a flat rate of 20–25 euros to the center of Naples. You’ll also find some great places to stay right in the center.

You can also share a taxi. We rode with other travelers and only paid 5 euros each. The taxi drops everyone off at the main train station, which is really centrally located.

Our tip: It’s best to have cash on hand for a shared taxi like this.

Alternative: The Alibus

The Alibus isn’t ideal for transfers from Naples Airport

Honestly, we never managed to take the Alibus in Naples — neither on arrival nor on departure. The reason: the incredibly long line at the bus stop.

After waiting ten minutes, the bus was full and left without us. We probably wouldn’t have made the next one either.

If you do find a short line: you can buy tickets for the airport transfer online, at the machine at the bus stop, or from the driver. A single ride costs 5 euros.

Stops in the city are the Garibaldi main train station and the Port of Naples. Both are super central and connected to the metro network.

You have two options here: the shuttle bus or the ferry.

The shuttle bus is the more comfortable and faster choice.

The bus to Sorrento isn’t the Alibus — it’s a different company, running hourly.

You board right in front of the terminal and get off in Sorrento. Super convenient.

The ride from Naples Airport to Sorrento takes about one hour.

Alternatively, you can take the ferry. From Molo Beverello — the most tourist-friendly dock at the Port of Naples — ferries run daily across the Gulf of Naples to Sorrento.

The journey takes 45 minutes.

How to Get from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast

From Naples Airport, you can reach the Amalfi Coast by rental car, shuttle bus, or ferry. There’s no train connection.

Fastest

By Minibus to the Amalfi Coast

The fastest way from Naples Airport to the Amalfi Coast is by minibus. It runs every two hours from the airport to Positano and costs 50 euros per person.

This gets you to the Amalfi Coast in 1.5 hours. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re not staying right in Positano, you’ll still need to travel further. The best way to get around along the Amalfi Coast after that is by ferry.

Our tip: If you’re traveling during peak season, book your tickets well in advance — the buses fill up fast.

By Rental Car to the Amalfi Coast

Except for Sixt, all car rental companies are a short distance from the airport. A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes to get there — it departs right in front of the terminal.

From the rental car company’s lot, you have direct access to the highway, which gets you to the Amalfi Coast in roughly one to two hours, depending on traffic.

Note: Driving restrictions on the Amalfi Coast from June to September
From June 15 to September 30, there are restrictions on vehicle traffic on the coastal road between Positano and Vietri sul Mare — the road that essentially connects all of the Amalfi Coast’s towns.
Who can drive and when depends on the last digit of the license plate. On odd-numbered days of the month, cars whose license plate ends in an odd number are not permitted to drive on this road.
Example: on July 17, you may only drive if the last digit of your license plate is an even number. This applies to both rental cars and foreign license plates. Scooters and motorcycles are exempt.

If you’re staying on the Amalfi Coast, you’re exempt from the restriction on your check-in and check-out days.

By Ferry to the Amalfi Coast

Boat traveling along the Amalfi Coast
From the Port of Naples, the ferry gets you to the Amalfi Coast in 2 hours

From the ferry, you’ll have a spectacular view of the Amalfi Coast and Mount Vesuvius.

Only take this route if you have time and genuinely want to enjoy the journey itself. From the Port of Naples, the ferry takes about two hours to reach the Amalfi Coast.

From Naples Airport, you’ll first need to take a taxi or the Alibus to the port.

The Port of Naples is one of the largest in Italy. For the ferry to the Amalfi Coast, head to the Molo Beverello dock — this is also the Alibus’s last stop.

It’s best to buy ferry tickets online from Direct Ferries. In winter, the ferry only runs on weekends; from March to April it runs once daily, and in peak season multiple times per day.

If the timing doesn’t work out, you can easily spend the night in Naples and head to the port the next morning. Beverello is very close to Naples’ historic center, right at the Municipio metro station.

How to Get from Naples Airport to Ischia

To get to Ischia, you’ll first need to make your way from the airport to the Molo Beverello dock.

Since the ferry is the only connection to Ischia, boats run multiple times daily even in the off-season. Tickets cost between 15 and 25 euros per person and can be purchased at Direct Ferries or directly at the port.

The crossing to Ischia takes about 50 minutes by fast boat and 1.5 hours by regular ferry.

By the way: The rumor that Naples is dangerous just won’t go away. But that’s old news — Naples has become really tourist-friendly and is seriously safe for visitors. So you have nothing to worry about for your transfer from the airport to Ischia!
