In a nutshell
- Mount Bromo is an active volcano in Indonesia and the absolute top attraction on the island of Java.
- It’s located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, home to multiple volcanoes and incredible landscapes — especially spectacular at sunrise.
- Guided tours to Mount Bromo all follow the same format: watch the sunrise from a viewpoint, then hike up to the volcano’s crater.
- Prefer to go independently? Spend the night near the volcano in Cemoro Lawang — our pick is the Artotel Cabin Bromo.

We’ve marked the Bromo volcano on a map for you.

What's the best way to visit Mount Bromo?
The easiest option is to book a guided tour to Mount Bromo. The best starting points are the towns of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo.
If you have more time and want to escape the tourist crowds, exploring Mount Bromo on your own is the way to go — though it does take a bit more planning.
We’ll walk you through both options in detail so you can decide which one works better for you.
Note: Either way, visiting Mount Bromo is most rewarding at sunrise. That’s when you’ll get the clearest views of the volcanoes. Later in the day, the national park is often hazy.
Tour to Mount Bromo

Guided tours are the most popular way to visit the national park — and it’s easy to see why.
Advantages of a Mount Bromo tour
- Transportation is included
- Entry fees are included
- You don’t have to worry about a thing
- The tours are affordable
Disadvantages of a Mount Bromo tour
- You’ll be surrounded by swarms of tourists
- No flexibility — everything is planned out
- You spend a lot of time in the car
Where do you book the tour?
We booked our Mount Bromo tour on the spot through our accommodation — the Mador Hostel. You can also book online through GetYourGuide, and the prices are pretty similar.

What do you need to bring on the Mount Bromo tour?
The most important thing is warm clothing — ideally every warm layer you packed for Java. Even if it’s over 30 degrees in Malang, it’s bitterly cold up at the top before sunrise.
We wore a T-shirt, a sweater, and a thick jacket — and still felt cold.
Beyond that, bring enough water (at least one liter) and some snacks. Hiking shoes are also a good idea.
What’s included in the tours?
- Transportation
- Hot drink + breakfast box
- Guide (don’t expect a ton of commentary from them)
- Entry fees
How Mount Bromo tours are structured
No matter which provider or starting point you choose, the schedule is always pretty similar. We did the Mount Bromo tour from Malang and are sharing our experience here.
12:30 AM: Departure from the hostel
At half past midnight, our driver picked us up at the hostel in a jeep — five of us in total. From there, we headed straight to the national park.
The total drive took just over two hours. First a steep winding road, then a gravel track for the final stretch. Honestly, just the drive itself was exciting.
The driver made bathroom stops along the way.
3:00 AM: Arrival at the viewpoint
Accounting for stops and delays, you’ll arrive around 3:00 AM at the road leading up to the King Kong Hill viewpoint. And it was already completely packed up there — one snack bar after another, jeeps lined up endlessly along the roadside.
Honestly, we hadn’t expected visiting Mount Bromo to be quite that touristy.
Our driver took us to one of the cafés, where we got a hot drink and fried banana.

4:00 AM: Heading up to King Kong Hill
From the café, it’s only about a ten-minute walk to the actual viewpoint. We set off around 4:00 AM and it was already absolutely packed up there.
The viewpoint felt more like an open-air cinema than a nature experience — and an icy wind was blowing the whole time. Honestly, we didn’t see a single person who wasn’t freezing.
Since the locals know that nobody comes dressed warmly enough, you can rent thick jackets and blankets everywhere for a small fee.
From that point on, it was a matter of waiting in the freezing cold. We found a good spot at the front railing and spent an hour watching it gradually get lighter.
But in the end, the views made it all worth it. The landscape is seriously stunning.
6:00 AM: Onward to the Bromo crater
After sunrise, we had a little time for coffee and a small breakfast. At 6 o’clock, we continued by jeep to the Bromo volcano, stopping at another viewpoint along the way.
When we arrived near the crater, there were already countless other jeeps. We joined the convoy across the flat sandy landscape and then had plenty of time to hike up to the Bromo crater.
The trail is about 5.5 kilometers round trip, with around 250 meters of elevation gain. You start by walking through sand, and the final stretch is roughly 240 steps.
8:30 AM: Return to Malang
Once our whole group had gathered back at the jeep, we headed straight back to our accommodation in Malang.
Just before leaving the national park, we made one more stop to admire the beautiful green landscape.
From there, it was about another 1.5 hours back to the hostel.

Mount Bromo on your own

Next time, we’d explore Mount Bromo on our own. The mass tourism really got on our nerves — and going independently is a great way to avoid that.
Advantages of going on your own
- It’s cheaper than guided tours
- You explore at your own pace
- You escape the tourist crowds
Disadvantages of going on your own
- More organizing required
- You need to budget more time
If you want to visit Mount Bromo independently, the best place to spend the night before is Cemoro Lawang.
Getting to Cemoro Lawang
Take the train to Probolinggo (from Surabaya, Malang, or wherever you’re coming from). From the train station, you can grab a taxi to Cemoro Lawang — easiest via Grab.
A cheaper option is to take a Grab from the station to the Probolinggo bus terminal and hop on a minibus to Cemoro Lawang. Just keep in mind that you might have to wait a while for the minibus to fill up before it departs.
Our hotel tip in Cemoro Lawang: The Artotel Cabin Bromo is a small hotel that’s perfectly fine for one night.
Hike to the viewpoint & Bromo crater
In the morning, get up around 2 or 3 AM and walk to King Kong Hill on foot. The hike takes about an hour, so aim to be at the top by around 4:30 AM.
Our tip: Find a spot at King Kong Hill that’s a little less crowded — meaning slightly further down from the main viewpoint.
After sunrise, walk back to Cemoro Lawang, have breakfast, and then head to the Bromo crater. Most tourists are already gone by 8 in the morning, so you’ll have a much more peaceful experience.
From Cemoro Lawang, it’s about 4 kilometers to Bromo. You can also grab a mototaxi for that stretch if you’d rather not walk.
Just like on the guided tours, you hike up to the Mount Bromo crater and back down — then it’s back to Cemoro Lawang.
Leaving Cemoro Lawang
You can continue on from Cemoro Lawang the same day — for example, to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, Malang, or Surabaya. We strongly recommend booking your onward transportation in advance.
After an exhausting night, the last thing you’ll want to do is figure out public transit on the fly.
Combo tours to Mount Bromo
Combo tours are also worth considering. A particularly popular option is a three-day tour that combines Mount Bromo with the Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and the Ijen volcano.
This is especially appealing if you’re heading to Bali after Java and are short on time. These three-day tours typically start in Malang or Surabaya and end at the ferry terminal toward Bali.

If you’re vacationing on Bali and traveling to Java just for the volcanoes, you can also book the three-day tour departing from Bali.

If three days is too much and Tumpak Sewu isn’t on your list, there’s also a two-day tour covering both the Bromo and Ijen volcanoes.
