What You Need to Know About the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Monteverde is a mystical cloud forest in Costa Rica. The plants and animals there are protected within the reserve.
The region surrounding the reserve is also called Monteverde — don’t let that confuse you. There are two more reserves in the area: the Santa Elena Reserve and the Children’s Eternal Rain Forest.
Monteverde is the largest and most famous reserve. The place is truly magical. It’s always misty and feels very mysterious, as the clouds hang quite low in the mountains here.
For us, the entire Monteverde region is one of the most beautiful highlights in Costa Rica, and experiencing the difference between a cloud forest and a rainforest is something you really shouldn’t miss.
Because of the mountains, temperatures in Monteverde stay between 59 and 77°F year-round. From December through April the weather is a bit nicer and the sun comes out more often. That’s also the best time to visit Costa Rica.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest is located in the interior of Costa Rica, about 150 kilometers north of the capital city San José.
So you know exactly where that is, we’ve marked Monteverde on a map for you. For reference, you can also see where the small town of Santa Elena is — that’s where most of the hotels are located.

Hiking in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
The best way to explore Monteverde is on a hike through the cloud forest — either on your own or with a guide.
Many travelers simply want to walk through the cloud forest and soak up that mystical feeling. But if you’d like to spot some cool animals like hummingbirds, monkeys, or raccoons, you should book a guide.
Our tip: Monteverde is also home to a huge number of snakes, spiders, frogs, and more. The best way to find them is on a night hike. And what could be more mystical than walking through the fog at dusk?

Alternatively, the tours are also available on Get Your Guide. The big advantage: you can cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance. Note that you’ll usually still need to pay the reserve entrance fee separately.

Zipline Tour in Monteverde
Monteverde is hands down the best place for a zipline tour. The experience is seriously one of a kind. From up here, the treetops look like broccoli — so cool!
We did the tour with the operator Extremo and it was really great. On top of the ziplines, you can also ride the tallest Tarzan swing in Costa Rica.
The whole thing is pure adrenaline! First a short free fall, then you swing like Tarzan back and forth between the treetops. Sounds amazing, right?
Just know that the ziplines are not directly inside the reserve — they’re a bit outside. Still totally worth it!

Suspension Bridges in the Monteverde Cloud Forest
Just like in the Arenal Volcano National Park, Monteverde also has suspension bridges. The largest provider is Selvatura Park. As with the ziplines, the park is not directly inside the Monteverde Reserve.
There are eight suspension bridges here and the trail is three kilometers long. Sometimes the clouds drift right through the bridges, which looks seriously cool.
That said, the bridge tour is pretty pricey at $49. It’s best to buy your tickets for the suspension bridges at Selvatura Park through the official website.

As an add-on, you can also book a guided tour through Get Your Guide, where a guide walks the suspension bridges with you — giving you a much better chance of spotting wildlife. That said, you can absolutely walk the bridges without a guide too.

Our tip: If you just want a photo with a bridge, a regular hike through the Monteverde Reserve is actually enough. The standard trails there also have a few bridges — just not quite as spectacular or as high as the dedicated suspension bridges.
How to Buy Your Online Ticket for the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Admission to the Monteverde Reserve costs $29 for adults and $16 for children ages 5 to 11. Younger children get in free. You can easily purchase your ticket through the official website of the reserve.
When booking, select “The Cloud Forest Walk – Self Guided Tour,” which lets you explore the park at your own pace. You’ll also need to choose right away whether you want the shorter route (about 1.5 hours) or the longer route (about 2.5 hours). Both cost the same.
In the next step, you can pick a date and a time slot. We recommend booking your ticket about two to three days in advance.

Hotels and Accommodations in Monteverde
For your visit to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, your best bet is to stay in or around Santa Elena. There are tons of options for every budget. You cannot sleep inside the reserve itself.

Camino Verde B&B Monteverde: Modernly furnished rooms with a large rooftop terrace, just a few minutes’ walk from the center. One of the most beautiful places to stay in Costa Rica.
Hotel Trópico Monteverde: Lovingly designed rooms in a hotel a little outside of Santa Elena, with breathtaking views — especially at sunset.
Getting to the Monteverde Cloud Forest by Car and Bus
Getting there by car or public transportation is pretty straightforward.
Getting There by Car
The drive from San José to Monteverde takes about three hours. You’ll probably want to check into your hotel before visiting the reserve — the best place to stay is Santa Elena.
Just enter Santa Elena into your navigation app. The small town is only five kilometers from the entrance of the Monteverde Reserve. On Google Maps, it’s listed as Entrance to Monteverde Reserve.
The official parking lot is located about one kilometer before the entrance and costs $5. From there, you can take a free shuttle to the entrance.
Getting There by Bus
If you’re starting in San José and want to take the bus to Monteverde, you’ll first need to travel to Santa Elena. You depart from Terminal 7-10 in San José (open in Google Maps).
The bus operated by Transmonteverde runs twice a day — at 6:30 AM and 2:30 PM. The ticket costs about $8, and you can buy it directly at the bus station or in advance online.
You can buy your ticket online at the Transmonteverde website or through the booking platform 12Go (slightly more expensive, but easy to use). Make sure to select the bus to Monteverde.

Getting There by Minivan
A great alternative to the bus is a shared minivan. It’s usually more comfortable and faster, though also more expensive. You can book minivan rides most easily through 12Go.

Our tip: On 12Go you can also easily search for connections to Monteverde from other parts of Costa Rica — whether you’re coming from La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio National Park, the Caribbean coast, or directly from the airport in San José.
From Santa Elena, there are no buses to the entrance of the Monteverde Reserve. Your best bet is to grab a taxi or an Uber.
Checklist for Your Visit
- Book your online ticket at least one day before your visit.
- Double-check on the official website for the current opening hours. Currently the reserve is open from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, but this can change at any time.
- Wear sturdy shoes — ideally hiking boots. And be sure to pack a rain jacket.
- Flash photography is not allowed inside the reserve.
- You don’t necessarily need to bring food — there is a restaurant inside the Monteverde Cloud Forest.
- Book a tour early if you plan to do one.

Our Personal Tips for Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Try to stay in the reserve until the afternoon. That’s usually when it clouds over and the whole cloud forest feels even more mystical.
If you only want to visit one reserve, we’d lean toward recommending the Santa Elena Reserve. It’s smaller, but even more unspoiled, less touristy, and cheaper.
Don’t miss the Monteverde Cheese Factory (open in Google Maps), located between Santa Elena and the reserve entrance. They serve amazing ice cream with a huge selection — and the cheese is pretty great too.
Santa Elena is a great place to pick up some souvenirs. We really recommend the souvenir shop Foresta Arte Loca (open in Google Maps). We found some seriously beautiful bracelets there.
