Where is Madeira located?

Madeira is an island that belongs to Portugal.

It sits in the Atlantic Ocean, north of the Canary Islands and west of Morocco.

From Lisbon, the flight takes about 1.5 hours. From most of Western Europe, you’re looking at roughly 3 to 4 hours in the air.

The most important Madeira tips at a glance

Why is a vacation on Madeira worth it?

Because of the incredible scenery. Madeira is simply wow! For us, it’s one of the most beautiful islands in Europe.

Breathtaking sea cliffs, colorful plant life, towering mountains, and black sand beaches — Madeira’s nature is truly unlike anywhere else.

For hiking enthusiasts especially, Madeira is absolutely worth the trip. The island is a genuine outdoor paradise.

What are the must-sees on Madeira?

Levadas: These man-made water channels are totally unique to Madeira — think narrow canals winding through the landscape, with beautiful hiking trails running right alongside them.

Lava pools: The natural swimming pools in Porto Moniz are an absolute highlight. They look seriously cool and are perfect for a swim.

Pico do Arieiro: Madeira’s third-highest peak — and the starting point for the legendary Stairways to Heaven trail up to the highest point, Pico Ruivo.

Ponta de São Lourenço: Dramatic sea cliffs and jaw-dropping views await at the island’s eastern tip. You can explore the peninsula on a well-marked hiking trail.

Funchal: The capital is packed with things to do — the charming old town along Rua Santa Maria, a cable car ride, and the famous wicker toboggan ride are all worth your time.

What's the best way to explore Madeira?

By car. The bus network is pretty limited, so renting a car is really the way to go.

We recommend booking one place to stay for your whole trip and using it as a base for day trips around the island.

Madeira isn’t huge, and the highway system is solid — you can reach pretty much any corner of the island without much hassle.

How much time should you plan for Madeira?

At least one week.

Seven days gives you enough time to hit all the major highlights comfortably.

But honestly, ten days or even two weeks is even better. That way you can tackle more hiking trails, spend a day at the beach, and discover a few of Madeira’s lesser-known spots.

What's the best base for a Madeira vacation?

Funchal. The capital has a huge range of restaurants, sights, and activities — and almost all guided tours and excursions depart from here. It’s also close to the airport, which is handy.

If you’re after more peace and nature, we’d point you toward the towns in the north — São Vicente and Porto Moniz are both great options.

Can you have a beach vacation on Madeira?

Sort of — but manage your expectations. Madeira isn’t a classic beach destination.

The water at most beaches is rough, and sandy beaches are rare.

That said, there are some genuinely stunning beaches here — great for photos and a swim if conditions are right.

Praia do Seixal and Prainha are two beautiful black sand beaches, and Praia do Garajau has a panorama unlike anything else on the island.

When is the best time to visit Madeira?

Our favorite months are April, May, September, and October. It’s warm but not scorching, and rain is rare.

Top pick: a trip in April. In spring, the island is absolutely stunning — flowers everywhere, lush green landscapes. Madeira isn’t called the Island of Flowers for nothing!

In fall, the sea is warmer, which makes it ideal if you want to swim.

Since Madeira stays warm year-round, you can visit any time — it’s even a fantastic New Year’s Eve destination. Just expect more rain in winter, and bigger crowds during an August vacation.
