Frequently Asked Questions About Vacationing in Liguria
What's the best way to get to Liguria?
If you’re driving from Central Europe, expect roughly a seven-hour drive to Liguria — it’s actually one of the more straightforward ways to arrive, especially since you’ll want a car once you’re there.
Flying is a bit trickier. Liguria only has the Genoa airport, and direct international connections are limited. Your best bet is to fly into Milan, Turin, or Pisa and then rent a car from there.
All three cities are about one to two hours from Liguria by car — totally manageable.
When is the best time to visit Liguria?
It really depends on what you’re planning to do. If you want to explore Genoa and a few coastal towns, Liguria is honestly great year-round — the mild climate means even winter stays pretty comfortable, rarely dipping below 41°F.
For hiking the Cinque Terre trails or heading into the mountains, late September and March are the sweet spots. You might catch a rainy day or two, but the paths are quiet and genuinely enjoyable.
Avoid November if you can — it rains a lot, and landslides and flooding are a real risk in Liguria during that period.
Summer is beautiful but seriously crowded. The narrow alleys of the Cinque Terre can feel overwhelming at peak season.
Planning a beach vacation? Aim for the wider beaches like Levanto, and book your accommodation well in advance.
Which part of the Ligurian coast is the most beautiful?
Without a doubt: the Cinque Terre National Park and the Golfo dei Poeti. Every corner of these two stretches is genuinely postcard-perfect — it’s not hype, it’s just how it looks.
Can you still swim in Liguria in October?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no — it really depends on the year. Some Octobers hit a lovely 86°F; others barely reach 68°F.
The earlier in October you go, the better your chances of actually getting in the water.
Is a vacation in Liguria expensive?
Overall, Liguria is pretty affordable compared to other Italian coastal destinations — but it depends a lot on where you’re staying.
The Cinque Terre and Portofino are on the pricier side. In the Cinque Terre, budget at least 200 euros per night for a room.
Genoa and La Spezia, on the other hand, are much more wallet-friendly — you can find a solid hotel room for around 100 euros per night.
