The Most Beautiful Beaches near Kuta on Lombok

Kuta sits right on the ocean, and nearby you’ll find an incredible number of stunning beaches. Here are our favorites.

Pantai Tanjung Aan

Pantai Tanjung Aan
This is what Pantai Tanjung Aan looks like from above — simply breathtaking!

Pantai Tanjung Aan is located about 10 kilometers east of Kuta and is, for us, one of the most beautiful beaches on Lombok. It sits sheltered in a bay, which means the water is usually calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

There are a few warungs along the beach where you can grab something to eat and drink. Our recommendation is Warung Rizki.

Don’t miss the side trip up to Bukit Merese either. It’s a rocky headland right next to the beach that delivers seriously stunning panoramas — and from up there you can spot even more hidden dream beaches below.

Pantai Tampah

Pantai Tampah
We caught an absolutely stunning sunset at Pantai Tampah

Tampah Beach is located about 12 kilometers west of Kuta and is perfect if you want total peace and quiet. There’s very little going on here and hardly any vendors trying to sell you things.

You can genuinely just relax in the sand and soak up the sun. The water is great for snorkeling — though bring your own gear, as there’s nothing to rent on-site.

We recommend heading to Tampah Beach in the late afternoon before sunset — the light is simply gorgeous then.

Pantai Selong Belanak

Pantai Selong Belanak
Pantai Selong Belanak is especially popular with beginner surfers

Selong Belanak Beach is located just under 20 kilometers west of Kuta and is the go-to beginner surfing beach in the area. There are plenty of surf schools right on the beach where you can book lessons.

Not into surfing? You can simply relax on the soft white sand or grab lunch at one of the warungs.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot buffalo wandering by — though that’s fairly rare.

The Coolest Activities in Kuta

Kuta Lombok offers a great range of things to do — here are the ones we loved most.

Surfing

Selong Belanak Beach
Selong Belanak Beach is ideal for beginner surfers

Kuta is through and through a surf town. You can’t surf directly at Kuta’s main beach, but there are seriously good spots just a short ride away.

Want to learn? Plenty of shops in town offer surf lessons — they’ll provide boards and take you straight to the best beaches.

Our picks for surf lessons: Ombak Movement Surf School (view on Google Maps) and Heartbeach Lombok Surf Academy (view on Google Maps)

Already got some experience? Rent a board in Kuta and head out to the surf beaches on your own. The easiest way to get around is to rent a scooter.

Check out our tips on renting a scooter in Bali — they apply to Lombok too!

Here are three great surf spots near Kuta on Lombok:

  • Gerupuk: Waves for all levels here. The surf spots are farther from shore, so you’ll be taken out by boat.
  • Selong Belanak Beach: a wonderful beach for beginners and one of the top highlights near Kuta Lombok.
  • Areguling Beach: a solid surf spot that’s popular with locals too. Better suited for more experienced surfers.

Snorkeling

Gili Sudak
The Secret Gilis are ideal for snorkeling

If surfing isn’t your thing, you can do some fantastic snorkeling at several beaches near Kuta. The best spot is the Secret Gili Islands in western Lombok — probably the most popular day trip from Kuta.

The easiest way to get there is to book a snorkeling day trip in Kuta. There are plenty of affordable tours available on-site.

You can also head out independently and take a boat to the Secret Gilis — just keep in mind it’s about a two-hour scooter ride from Kuta.

Prefer to stay closer? There are also great snorkeling spots right near town.

Discovering Viewpoints

Bukit Merese
From Bukit Merese you have stunning views of hidden beaches

There are loads of great vantage points around Kuta, since the beaches along the south coast are separated by hills. Here are our top picks for viewpoints near Kuta Lombok:

  • Bukit Merese: A large rocky headland at Tanjung Aan Beach and a real standout near Kuta on Lombok. You can hike across the top and discover hidden beaches with turquoise water below.
  • ASHTARI: A yoga retreat and restaurant perched above Kuta with sweeping views over the town and ocean — and a great place to eat.
  • Bukit Seger: A great spot to watch the sunset near Kuta.

Getting to Kuta on Lombok

If you fly to Lombok, getting to Kuta is quick — Lombok Airport is only about 30 minutes away by car or scooter.

Do note that almost exclusively domestic flights land here.

You can arrange an airport transfer directly through your accommodation in Kuta.

If you arrive by boat, transfers are easy to organize too. We recommend taking the slow ferry from Bali to Lombok. The crossing takes about five hours and arrives at Lembar on Lombok’s west coast.

From Lembar port, it’s roughly a one-hour ride by scooter or car to Kuta.

Already on Lombok? You can ride a scooter from any town or book a transfer to Kuta.

By the way: We also have a full guide to an Indonesia road trip itinerary — Kuta on Lombok features in that one too. Definitely worth a look!

Getting Around in Kuta

Kuta itself is tiny, so you can walk pretty much everywhere on foot. For day trips to the beaches nearby, a scooter is by far your best option.

For longer excursions — like the trip out to the Secret Gilis — you can easily book a tour or transfer in town. There are plenty of operators in Kuta who can sort this out for you.
