In a nutshell
- It’s your first Thailand vacation and you want the classic Koh Samui experience — sightseeing, beach, and nightlife? Then we recommend a hotel at Chaweng Beach. Our top pick: King’s Garden Resort.
- We personally prefer things a bit quieter, which is why our top recommendation is a hotel at Lamai Beach — still very central, but with less hustle and a more relaxed evening vibe. Our pick: Pearl of Samui Resort.
- There are 2 more areas we recommend for Koh Samui accommodation. For all four locations, we break down the pros and cons and share our best hotel picks.
- Koh Samui is one of the most expensive islands in Thailand. For a solid mid-range hotel, budget at least 50 euros per night — often more.
Where to Stay on Koh Samui?
Koh Samui is the second-largest island in Thailand after Phuket – and definitely one of the most popular. The range of accommodation is huge and you’ll find places to stay on Koh Samui at every price point.
The tourist center is in the east of the island, around the popular Chaweng Beach. Overall, there are four areas we recommend for staying on Koh Samui – three in the east and one in the west.
The four areas are:
- Chaweng Beach: For first-time visitors who want a lively mix of sightseeing and nightlife ➞ King’s Garden Resort
- Lamai Beach: Perfect mix of sightseeing and a relaxed beach vacation ➞ Pearl of Samui Resort
- Bo Phut Beach & Maenam Beach: Centrally located with a charming village atmosphere ➞ Pico Samui
- Lipa Noi Beach: More secluded on the west coast, ideal for peace and quiet ➞ Tropical Heavens Garden
Both Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach are equally great bases for exploring the island. Your best bet is to rent a scooter and discover the best attractions on Koh Samui at your own pace. For our 11 favorite activities and day trips on Koh Samui, it doesn’t really matter where you’re staying — you’ll often be picked up right from your hotel.
The 4 Areas on a Map

We’ve talked a lot about east and west already. For a clear overview, we’ve marked all four areas on the map above.
For better orientation, we’ve also marked important stops for your Thailand road trip: the airport, the Bangrak Seatran Pier (ferry to Koh Phangan), and the Na Thon Pier (ferry to Surat Thani).
You can also see where Fisherman’s Village and the Na Muang Waterfall are located — two absolute highlights on Koh Samui that you really shouldn’t miss.
A Hotel on Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach

A hotel on Koh Samui’s popular Chaweng Beach is perfect if you want a central, lively location right by the sea.
Is this your first time on Koh Samui and you want the classic experience? Meaning a mix of sightseeing, beach, and nightlife? Then book a hotel on Chaweng Beach — you won’t be disappointed.
Chaweng is the longest and most popular beach on Koh Samui — fine white sand, turquoise water, and usually calm enough for swimming.
You’ll never be bored here: there are countless restaurants, bars, clubs, night markets, and plenty of water sports during the day. The airport is only a ten-minute drive away.
We stayed at Chaweng Beach on our first visit too and loved the lively buzz. That said, the streets behind the beach were often dirty and smelled after the parties — worth knowing before you book.
Advantages of staying at Chaweng Beach
- Right on a dream beach
- Great base for sightseeing
- Best tourist infrastructure on the island
- Excellent nightlife
Disadvantages of staying at Chaweng Beach
- Very touristy
- Can get loud at night near the clubs
- Some sections of the beach are blocked by hotels
- Hotel prices are higher than in other areas
Our Hotel Recommendations for Koh Samui's Chaweng Beach
Want to sleep in a beachfront bungalow on Koh Samui? We’d point you straight to the King’s Garden Resort — one of the best hotels on Chaweng Beach.
For a more luxurious stay, check out the Banana Fan Sea Resort. The bungalows are seriously modern and designed with great attention to detail.

A Hotel on Lamai Beach on Koh Samui

Lamai Beach is worth it if you want a good balance of relaxation, comfort, and variety — without the hustle of Chaweng.
Less crowded than Chaweng but still lively, Lamai Beach sits just south of Chaweng. It’s ideal if you want a mix of sightseeing and a relaxed beach vacation.
You won’t have to sacrifice a solid tourist infrastructure either. There’s a great selection of beachfront restaurants and several bars open in the evenings.
One big plus is the better value for money. Many hotels are right on the water and genuinely beautiful — though luxury options are a bit thinner on the ground here.
So if you want a central location but don’t want to be right in the thick of things, Lamai Beach is ideal. Honestly, it’s where we’d book our hotel on Koh Samui for our next visit.
Advantages of staying at Lamai Beach
- Beautiful, quieter beach
- Great base for sightseeing
- Better value for money than Chaweng
- More relaxed atmosphere
Disadvantages of staying at Lamai Beach
- Less nightlife
- Fewer shops and large supermarkets
- Farther from the airport
- Beach can be rocky at low tide
Our Hotel Recommendations for Koh Samui's Lamai Beach
The Pearl of Samui Resort is one of our top picks on Koh Samui’s Lamai Beach — you’ll stay in modern beachfront bungalows.
If you’re after something more upscale, check out the Pattra Vill Resort. It’s very centrally located and offers great value for money.

A Hotel on Bo Phut Beach or Maenam Beach

Bo Phut Beach or Maenam Beach is especially worth considering for travelers who prefer a quieter, more stylish, or family-friendly vibe.
In the north of Koh Samui, you’ll find the beaches of Bo Phut and Maenam. You’re still in a central spot here, but it’s noticeably quieter than Chaweng or Lamai.
The atmosphere is also quite different. Instead of a pure beach vibe, you get a charming fishing village feel — Bo Phut Beach sits right next to the popular Fisherman’s Village, which is worth an evening stroll in itself.
Most places to stay here are stylish boutique hotels and peaceful resorts with upscale restaurants right on the water. You’ll also find the occasional budget option.
The beach isn’t quite as fine-grained, but you’re just a short distance from the airport, the pier to Koh Phangan, and popular highlights like the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem.
Advantages of a hotel on Bo Phut or Maenam Beach
- Less touristy
- Quiet and very relaxed atmosphere
- Great location for day trips in the north
- Good value for money
Disadvantages of a hotel on Bo Phut or Maenam Beach
- Hardly any nightlife
- In Maenam the water gets deep quickly
- In Bo Phut it can be rocky at low tide
- Some accommodations are a bit off the main drag
Our Hotel Recommendations for Bo Phut and Maenam Beach
A top luxury pick in this area is the Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort. The rooms are stunning and the food is absolutely incredible.
A more affordable option on Koh Samui’s Bo Phut Beach is the Pico Samui. At this small boutique hotel, you’ll stay in spacious bungalows.

A Hotel on Lipa Noi Beach on the West Coast

A hotel on Lipa Noi Beach is perfect if you’re after a peaceful setting focused on relaxation, romance, or quality family time.
On the west side of Koh Samui lies the beautiful Lipa Noi Beach. Here you’ll find one of the most relaxed stretches of sand on the island, far removed from the touristy east coast.
The sand is fine and pale, the entry into the water is gentle, and in calm weather the sea here is like glass — ideal for kids and great for swimming or kayaking.
That said, don’t expect a big tourist infrastructure. There’s hardly any shopping, only a small selection of restaurants, no beach vendors, and barely any bars or parties.
Most hotels here are boutique or luxury resorts, often with spacious villas, direct beach access, and plenty of room to breathe. Value for money is generally better than in Chaweng.
Advantages of a hotel on Lipa Noi Beach
- Far from mass tourism and party noise
- Gently sloping beach, no rocks
- Breathtaking sunsets
- Handy location for ferries and boat trips
Disadvantages of a hotel on Lipa Noi Beach
- Little tourist infrastructure
- Very quiet — almost no nightlife
- A car or scooter is almost essential
- Not the best base for sightseeing
Our Hotel Recommendations for Lipa Noi Beach
Our favorite here is the Tropical Heavens Garden Samui. This small boutique hotel sits in the middle of a palm grove and the tropical room design is seriously lovely.
