The Best Places to Stay on Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan has an amazing variety of areas and hotels — not just when it comes to beaches and sights, but also when deciding where to stay on Koh Phangan.
These are the 4 areas we recommend for your stay on Koh Phangan:
- Thong Sala: The island’s main town right by the ferry terminal. You’ll find local markets every day, plenty of bars, and great-value accommodation. It’s the best base for sightseeing and perfect if you’re only spending a few days on the island.
- The beaches in the northwest: A favorite among travelers who want a mix of beautiful beaches, a good range of restaurants and shops, and chilled-out bars at night.
- Haad Rin: Famous for the Full Moon Party, which takes place once a month on Haad Rin Beach — but there’s always something happening here. You’ll find everything from luxury resorts to backpacker stays right by the beach.
- The beaches in the northeast: Ideal if you’re looking for peace and quiet by the sea. This part of the island has many of the best hotels on Koh Phangan. Prices are a bit higher, but the value for money is excellent.
Our tip: No matter which area you choose, renting a scooter is the best way to explore the island.

What You Need to Know Before Booking Your Hotel
Before we dive into the best places to stay and the most beautiful hotels on Koh Phangan, here are two important tips you should know before booking.
#1 Hotels on Koh Phangan during the Full Moon Party
Around the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan (roughly two nights before and after), hotel prices shoot up – even in the usually affordable low season.
Haad Rin is where prices increase the most, though you might still find a few reasonably priced options close to the party.
The key is to book well in advance, as most hotels, especially near Haad Rin Beach, are fully booked months ahead of time. Other parts of the island are less affected.
So, keep the party schedule in mind and check Full Moon Party dates early. If you’re not planning to join the party, it’s better to pick a different period for your stay.
#2 High taxi prices on Koh Phangan
Taxis on Koh Phangan can be pricey, so we highly recommend renting a scooter (or a car) to get around the island.
If you’d rather not use a scooter all the time, pick an area with good tourist infrastructure – that way you can easily reach some sightseeing attractions, restaurants, and beaches depending on your needs.
Our Favorite Hotels on Koh Phangan
During our last trip through Thailand, we spent nearly two weeks on Koh Phangan and stayed in two accommodations.
We picked the area around Thong Sala for both stays – one right on the beach and one in the town center.
Why: We didn’t have a scooter all the time, were working locally, and wanted to be within walking distance of the best markets and restaurants.
Here’s a closer look at our two favorite hotels on Koh Phangan.
#1 Colorful Hut

If you’re looking for charming beach bungalows on Koh Phangan, we can heartily recommend the Colorful Hut. We spent most of our time here.
The highlight is the beachfront location. Relax in cozy hammocks under tall palm trees or cook something in the communal kitchen – all with a view of the sea.
The bungalows themselves are small but smartly designed, with plenty of storage, a comfortable bed, and a semi-open bathroom. Some even have a terrace with a sea view, but all of them have the soothing sound of the ocean.
The food is also special at Colorful Hut. Breakfast – included or optional depending on your booking – and the hotel’s beachfront restaurant dishes are fully vegan.
We recommend booking at least a standard bungalow. Budget rooms are cheaper but lack air conditioning. There are also excellent family rooms.
And a nice bonus: you can join a free yoga class every morning – a relaxing way to start the day.
#2 Blessings Home & Café
Blessings Home & Café is right in the heart of Thong Sala. It’s a stylish hostel with a few cozy double rooms.
We love the interior style – a mix of modern Scandinavian and industrial design that feels really fresh.
We stayed in the larger hostel rooms with comfortable beds. There’s a big kitchen and a chill communal lounge in the backyard.
You can also hang out in the café connected to the hostel, where breakfast is served from a menu every morning (sometimes included depending on your booking). We found it really tasty!
All food at Blessings Home & Café is vegan, and only plant-based milk is used for coffee. There are fun activities available almost every day.
Fun fact: Both Colorful Hut and Blessings Home & Café are owned by the same person – we only realized this after booking. If you stay at Blessings Home, you can also join the yoga classes at Colorful Hut.

Where to Stay in the Northwest?

Conclusion: The northwest is perfect if you want a hotel on a beautiful beach while still having easy access to lively areas with good infrastructure.
Looking for a perfect mix of beach time and sightseeing? Then booking a hotel on the northwest beaches of Koh Phangan is your best bet.
Many of the island’s most beautiful beaches are here, paired with solid tourist infrastructure – restaurants, bars, and shops. There’s always something happening, but it never feels overcrowded. A scooter comes in handy if you don’t want to walk far.
We suggest looking for hotel on Salad Beach, Haad Yao, or Zen Beach. Here, you’ll find plenty of good mid-range hotels, some right on the beach and offering excellent value for money.
The area is also popular with expats, and you’ll find numerous yoga retreats nearby. Some highlights are within easy reach, while others, like the famous Bottle Beach, are just under an hour’s drive away.
Pros of a hotel in the Northwest
- Some of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan
- Good selection of mid-range hotels on the beach
- Excellent value for money

One of the best hotels on Koh Phangan in the northwest is the Green Papaya Beach Resort. Located directly on beautiful Salad Beach, the rooms and cottages feature a stylish Thai design. Perfect for families too!
A slightly more budget-friendly option is the Cookies Salad Resort – also right on Salad Beach. It offers a modern boho style, à la carte breakfast, and a stunning view of the bay from the upper rooms.
Where to Stay in Haad Rin

Conclusion: A hotel in Haad Rin is perfect during the Full Moon Party. But it’s also great if you like being somewhere where there’s always something going on in the evening.
One of the most iconic experiences on Koh Phangan is the Full Moon Party, held once a month on Haad Rin Beach. Planning to join the party? Then Haad Rin is the place to be.
The area is packed with bars along the beach, small shops, restaurants, and lively alleyways full of nightlife. You can choose accommodation in the village or on nearby beaches like Leela Beach.
Around the Full Moon Party and during Thailand’s high season, be prepared for nonstop energy and partying backpackers. In the off-season, the area is surprisingly quiet.
That said, Haad Rin isn’t our top pick for a long stay on Koh Phangan. Hotels tend to be pricey and offer less value for money compared to other areas.
Note: If you plan to stay here for the Full Moon Party, book well in advance – most hotels are fully booked months ahead. Even basic backpacker stays can get very expensive during this time.
Pros of a hotel in Haad Rin
- Right by the Full Moon Party
- Beautiful beaches (away from the party)
- Good starting point for sightseeing
Cons of a hotel in Haad Rin
- One of the most expensive areas
- Lower value for money
- Lots of litter during parties
- Even outside the Full Moon Party, the vibe can feel like a beach festival
The best places to stay in Haad Rin
For a stay in Haad Rin, we recommend the Vannee Golden Sands Beachfront Resort. Located right on the beach, the rooms feature a modern Thai design. Insider tip: it’s one of the few Haad Rin hotels that isn’t fully booked for every Full Moon Party.
If you want a slightly cheaper option, try the Sarikantang Resort & Spa. Set on the serene Leela Beach, it’s quiet yet just a short drive to the lively town center. The rooms are chic, minimalist, and perfect for a relaxing stay.
Where to Stay in the Northeast: Around Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach

Conclusion: A hotel on Thong Nai Pan Yai beach in the northeast is ideal if you are planning a relaxing and quiet beach holiday, completely away from the hustle and bustle.
If your main goal on Koh Phangan is to unwind on the beach and sightseeing is secondary, the northeast of the island is the perfect choice.
Here, you’ll be far from the crowds and experience a completely calm side of Koh Phangan. You’ll still find small, authentic restaurants in the nearby village.
We especially recommend the bay around Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach. The beach has two sections and is ideal for a beach holiday: soft sand, shallow water, and a serene atmosphere.
Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach is also home to some of Koh Phangan’s most beautiful resorts and luxury hotels.. Not as grand as resorts in Khao Lak or hotels on Phuket, but still stunning and perfect for a relaxing stay.
Our tip: On a small hill next to Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach, the C2 Bar offers amazing views of the bay – our favorite spot on Koh Phangan.
Pros of a hotel in the Northeast
- Extremely quiet, far from parties and busy markets
- Authentic local restaurants nearby
- One of the island’s most beautiful beaches
- Beautiful resorts and luxury hotels
Cons of a hotel in the Northeast
- Far from most attractions
- Long distance from the ferry terminal
The best places to stay on Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach
Looking for a boutique hotel on Koh Phangan? Our favorite is the Sand in My Shoes Beach Loft, one of the most beautiful hotels on the island. The 9 rooms are stylish and modern, and breakfast is served right on the beach.
If you prefer a slightly more budget-friendly hotel, we recommend the Havana Beach Resort. You can stay right on the beach in rooms with a modern Thai design, and a tasty breakfast is included.
Where to Stay on Bottle Beach

Our absolute favorite beach on Koh Phangan is Bottle Beach. It feels quite secluded, as the bay can only be reached via a bumpy gravel road or by longtail boat.
Spending the night here is something special, because the bay is at its most beautiful early in the morning and late afternoon, when the sun dips behind the mountains. Even though it gets busy during the day, early mornings and late afternoons are wonderfully peaceful.
If you want to experience one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan up close, we can highly recommend it.
There are four hotels and resorts on Bottle Beach. Our favorite is the Bottle Beach 1 Resort, with lovely bamboo huts right on the beach and the only pool on the bay.
