The Best Time for a Vacation with Your Dog on Juist
The best time to visit Juist with your dog is during the off-season from October to April. During peak season, the island gets seriously crowded and you’ll have to keep your dog close at all times to avoid bothering other visitors — which puts a lot of restrictions on both of you.
The off-season is a completely different story! The entire Juist beach is open to dogs during that time. On top of that, the locals tend to be much more relaxed about the leash rule when it’s quieter — as long as your dog listens well.
Getting to Juist with Your Dog
Getting there with your dog is really straightforward — no need to stress at all. Here’s a look at what options you have for the journey.
Getting There by Island Ferry
Taking the island ferry from Norddeich to Juist is completely stress-free for you and your dog. The ride costs around 8 euros per dog and takes about 90 minutes.
Before departure, make sure your dog has had a bathroom break and that you have enough drinking water for them.
On board, you can sit on the upper or lower deck with plenty of space. The large island ferry barely rocks either, which is great for any anxious dog.
Getting There by Speedboat
The speedboats from Norddeich to Juist are much smaller than the island ferries and about an hour faster. However, that also means the ride is bumpier and less relaxed.
If there’s any risk your dog might get stressed in that situation, it’s better to go with the island ferry.
A trip on the speedboat “Inseltaxi” costs 5 euros per dog. The trip on the speedboat “Töwerland-Express” is free for dogs.

Getting There by Plane
You can also get to Juist with your dog by small plane from Norden-Norddeich. We’d strongly advise against it, though, because:
- it’s expensive
- muzzles are required
- it’s exhausting.
Are Dogs Allowed in the Horse-Drawn Carriages?
Yes! Dogs are allowed to ride in the carriages on Juist for an additional fee of around 10 euros. A fun little detail: the carriage operators often have dogs of their own — and they frequently sit right up front next to the coachman on the box seat.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants on Juist
There’s hardly a restaurant or café on Juist where dogs aren’t welcome. For example, you can bring your dog to our three favorite spots on Juist — Hafenrestaurant, Domäne Bill, and Lütje Teehuus.
If you mention when making a reservation or at the front desk that you’re coming with a dog, you’ll often be seated at tables that offer more space and quiet for your four-legged friend. We think that’s a really thoughtful touch!

Great Walking Routes on Juist with Your Dog
On Juist, you can walk with your dog pretty much anywhere — as long as your dog is on a leash and you stay out of the dunes. We think the nicest routes for walking your dog on Juist are through the small forest and along the dog beaches.
Walking Your Dog in the Small Forest
The walk through Juist’s small forest is a genuinely exciting experience for you and your dog. The loop takes about three hours and starts at the dike gap near the harbor. From there, you can stroll over the dike in the direction of Loog.
Loog itself is already very interesting on its own. But you can keep going and reach the Juist Hammersee via easy walking paths, strolling right along the edge of the small forest.
It’s incredibly peaceful out here. Just remember to keep your dog on a leash — there’s a good chance you’ll come across pheasants or deer. The return trip follows the same route back.
Our tip: On the way back from Loog, take the parallel street. So if you came via Loogster Pad, head back along Hammerseestraße. That way you’ll see even more of Loog, and your dog will have even more to sniff.
Dog Beaches on Juist
Outside of season (from mid-October to mid-May), the entire Juist beach is a dog beach! It’s truly perfect. You and your dog can enjoy 17 kilometers of sandy beach.
During the season, there are two designated dog beaches on Juist: Dog Beach West and Dog Beach East. Here your dog can run, play, and even go in the water — as long as they stay on a leash. We like using a long tracking leash. That way the dog has plenty of room while still following the rules.
One thing we particularly love: there’s a small water station for dogs right along the beach promenade!
Dog Beach West
Dog Beach West is our absolute favorite! And you can turn a regular visit to the dog beach into a truly great outing of about three hours.
The first stretch takes you along Billstraße toward Loog and all the way to Loogster Bauern. Even on this section alone, there is an incredible amount to see — houses, side streets, and lots of wild roses. Real, authentic island life.
At Loogster Bauern, you’ll reach Dog Beach West via the beach access point. From there to the Domäne Bill beach access, you and your dog have endless space to run and play fetch.
You can then wrap up the outing at the top attraction on Juist: the Bill. The Domäne Bill restaurant is right there, and dogs are warmly welcome. So you can take a break, grab a bite and a drink, before heading back.
Dog Beach East
Of course, there’s also a dog beach on the eastern side of the island. If that’s more your direction, we have a great walk recommendation for you and your dog on that route too:
The walk takes about two to three hours and starts right in the village. If you head along the beach promenade toward the east, you’ll arrive directly at the Lobster beach access and reach the dog beach right away — a super easy route.
At Dog Beach East, you can play with your dog to your heart’s content, go in the ocean, or keep walking toward the airfield. From there, you can catch a glimpse of the small island planes, which is actually pretty fascinating.
For the return trip, you have two options: either head back the same way or walk into the village via Flugplatzstraße. Flugplatzstraße is busier — your dog and you will encounter carriages, cyclists, and other walkers. We love how varied that route is.
Where Can Your Dog Run Off-Leash on Juist?
If you want to let your dog run and play freely on Juist — especially during peak season — you can use the off-leash dog area on the eastern side of the island. It’s easy to reach on foot from the village and offers your dog not just plenty of space, but also agility obstacles. And for you, there’s a great view of the Wadden Sea.
Rules for Dogs on Juist
To keep Juist as dog-friendly as it is for years to come, it’s really important that dog owners follow the local rules. That might sound strict, but there really aren’t many rules at all.
Leash Rules on Juist
Dogs must be on a leash across the entire island — except at the off-leash area in the east. This is meant to promote a harmonious coexistence between people and dogs, and to protect the local wildlife.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the dunes and dikes protect the island. If lots of dogs were digging holes here, we could pretty quickly say goodbye to Juist altogether.
On top of that, Juist is home to some truly wonderful wildlife like deer and pheasants. They naturally want their peace and quiet too, and shouldn’t have to flee from off-leash dogs.
Our tip: Retractable leashes are generally frowned upon on Juist, especially for large dogs. It’s better to bring a 3- to 5-meter long tracking leash. That’s allowed and gives your dog much more freedom — as long as you trust your dog.
Dog Waste Bags on Juist
To keep the island clean, there are many dog waste bag dispensers on Juist — which we think is great! So if you forgot your bags or need a few more, grab some along the way.
Is Your Dog Allowed in Stores on Juist?
You’re allowed to bring your dog into most stores on Juist. However, dogs are not permitted inside the island bakery Remmers, for example. The owners don’t mean any harm by it — the law requires it. Dogs must stay outside wherever unwrapped food is sold, and this applies to supermarkets as well.
Veterinarian on Juist
There is no resident veterinarian on Juist. A vet from the mainland visits the island at regular intervals to examine and treat animals. That’s why it’s especially important to keep a close eye on your dog and bring any medications they might need.

Pet Supply Stores on Juist
There’s no dedicated pet supply store on Juist. You can buy dog food on the island at the drugstore and the supermarket. If your dog needs a special diet, make sure to bring enough with you.
