The Billriff
The Billriff Juist is the western tip of the island — the point where the Wadden Sea and the North Sea meet. What makes it so special is the wide beach with large sandbars and the sweeping dune landscape.
At the Bill, your gaze stretches so far across the sea that you feel like the last person on earth. What an incredible experience!
On a clear day, you can also see the bird island of Memmert and the so-called Kachelotplatte — a sandbar that’s been here for more than 200 years.
Also keep an eye out for the Schwarze Bake at the reef. The structure stands right on the dune slope and serves as a navigational marker for passing ships.
Billriff Hike
Because there are two beach access points at the Bill, you can do a great loop hike here. Our favorite route takes in all the highlights of the Juist Bill and takes about 1.5 hours.
Start at the excursion restaurant Domäne Bill (more on that in a moment) and head left along the trail straight toward the western tip. From here you get a wonderful view of the Wadden Sea and arrive directly at the Billriff beach access.
You’re now at the very end of the island and have an endless vista over sandy stretches and the open sea. It really is incredibly beautiful!
Our tip: If you come on a Sunday or outside of peak season, it’s as peaceful here as anywhere on the island.
Walk around the island’s tip and keep going along the beach. After about an hour, you’ll reach the Domäne Bill beach access and can leave the beach — or simply stay a while longer. Sandy paths will then bring you back to the Domäne Bill excursion restaurant.
Domäne Bill
Domäne Bill is a perfect excursion destination — even if you’re just on a day trip to Juist.
A beautiful approach, an idyllic setting, and really great food! Exactly our kind of place.
The Domäne sits about 7 kilometers from the island’s main village, right between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. That’s truly something special.
They serve the popular and almost legendary raisin bread that guests rave about for years after their vacation.
If raisins aren’t your thing, we’d also recommend the homemade potato salad. Just thinking about it makes us want a full plate right now.
Another big plus is the view. Sit outside with your food and you can look straight across the salt marshes to the Wadden Sea while listening to the oystercatchers. It doesn’t get more peaceful than at the Bill.
By the way: Domäne is an old word for estate — which is exactly what this spot used to be.
How to Get to the Juist Bill
You can reach the Bill by bike, horse-drawn carriage, or on foot. Here’s which option we love most and what you’ll see along the way:
By Bike to the Bill
Cycling to the Bill is our favorite way to get there. The route is easy to ride and you have an almost uninterrupted view of the Wadden Sea the whole way.
You also ride through the Juister Loog and pass by the Juist farm and the Hammersee, so there’s plenty to see along the way.
The ride from the village along Billstraße takes about 25 minutes.
You can park your bike at Domäne Bill to easily access the beach and the Billriff.
On Foot to the Bill
You can of course also cover the route on foot. You get the same great views and the chance to take everything in at a slower pace. And the roughly 3.5 kilometers from the center of the island are very manageable.
By Carriage to the Bill
The Juist horse-drawn carriages from Fuhrbetrieb Kannegieter head to the Bill almost daily and make stops along the way — for example at the salt marshes by the Wadden Sea.
If you fancy a carriage excursion, the Bill is a perfect destination. The round trip by carriage (75 minutes there and about 20 minutes back) with a one-hour stay at the Bill costs about 60 euros per person.
