You should never head into the mountains unprepared — the weather and terrain can be unpredictable. But with a bit of good planning, nothing stands in the way of a wonderful hiking vacation in Slovenia.

When is the best time to hike in Slovenia?
The summer months of June through September are the sweet spot for hiking in Slovenia. Outside this window, expect snow in the higher mountains.
If you’re sticking to lower elevations, October and May are also great options.
Even in summer, thunderstorms and heavy rain can roll in fast. Always keep an eye on the forecast — we recommend the Bergfex app for reliable mountain weather.

What to pack for hiking?
You’ll want a well-packed hiking backpack. Here’s what we always bring on the trails in Slovenia:
- Enough water (at least 1.5 liters)
- Water filter if needed
- Snacks (cookies, crackers, bananas, sandwiches)
- Rain jacket
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Phone with navigation and camera (fully charged!!!)
- Bandages
Wearing the right clothing matters too. In a single day in the mountains, you can sweat, get cold, and get soaked — sometimes all three. We recommend layering so you can adapt to whatever the day throws at you.

Dangerous Animals in Slovenia
Slovenia is home to bears. That said, actually encountering one on a hike is unlikely. The largest bear populations live in the forests of Kočevsko and Notranjska — extra caution is worth it in those areas.
In the Kamnik–Savinja Alps or Triglav National Park, bear sightings are very rare. You don’t need to be overly worried there — but it’s still worth reading up on bear safety before your trip.
Find more tips about bears in our article on safety in Slovenia
Slovenia also has some venomous snakes, wolves, and lynxes. Since these animals are very shy around humans, encounters are extremely rare.
