The Most Beautiful Attractions in Galle
Galle is one of our top highlights in Sri Lanka, largely because of its stunning historic district. But beyond that, the city has plenty of other cool places to visit as well.
Galle Dutch Fort
What you need to know: Galle Dutch Fort is a fortress originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later expanded by the Dutch in 1649. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortification walls, made of coral stone and granite, encircle the old town and stretch a total of 3 kilometers.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! A stroll along the very well-preserved fortification walls with views of the crashing sea is simply a must when visiting Galle.
Historic Old Town
What you need to know: Galle’s old town lies within the walls of the Dutch Fort. You can wander its lanes for hours, discovering a different cool colonial-style building around every corner. Many of the historic houses now contain chic boutiques, art galleries, and hip cafés.
Is it worth it? The charming old quarter is what makes Galle our favorite city in Sri Lanka. You won’t find an old town like it anywhere else on the island. Another great thing: no cars are allowed — so you can stroll around completely at your own pace.

Lighthouse
What you need to know: You can spot Galle’s landmark from far away — the white lighthouse at the southeastern end of the city wall inside Galle Fort. It stands just under 26 meters tall. You can’t visit the interior.
Is it worth it? With the sea in the background and palm trees all around, the lighthouse makes for a really beautiful photo. That said, you don’t need to budget much time here.
Museums in Galle Dutch Fort
What you need to know: Galle has several museums dedicated to the history and culture of the city. Here are the most important ones and what they cover:
- Maritime Archaeology Museum: Artifacts from shipwrecks and the history of seafaring
- Galle National Museum: History and culture of the region during the colonial era
- Historical Mansion Museum: Collection of antiques and traditional craftsmanship
Is it worth it? If you’re genuinely interested in Galle’s history, the exhibitions are sure to fascinate you. If you’re only in town for a day trip, though, we’d skip the museums and explore the old town lanes instead — that’s what we did too.
Galle Cricket Stadium
What you need to know: Galle is home to the International Cricket Stadium, which hosts home games of the national team. The stadium isn’t inside Galle Fort — it’s in the newer part of the city. You can see it clearly from the fortification walls, for example near the old clock tower.
Is it worth it? Cricket is seriously popular in Sri Lanka — it’s practically a religion here. If you get the chance, definitely catch a game — either from the fortification walls or by diving headfirst into Sri Lankan cricket culture and buying a ticket at the stadium box office.
Harbor and Fish Market
What you need to know: Galle’s harbor was for a long time the most important trading port in the country. That role has since shifted to Colombo, but the harbor is still incredibly important for fishing. A fish market runs every day from around 5 AM until midday.
Is it worth it? We find the lively bustle of fish markets genuinely exciting. Even if you don’t want to buy anything yourself, there’s so much to take in. The fishing boats and stalls piled high with fresh shrimp, squid, and the catch of the day make for great photos.

Most of the things to do in Galle are located in the old town, which is also where you’ll find the nicest places to stay. Because of their location, though, they tend to be pricier. For a more affordable stay, look for a hotel in the newer part of the city.

What is the weather like in Galle?
Galle has a tropical climate with high humidity and daytime temperatures between 27 and 31 degrees Celsius. It cools down a few degrees at night.
The wettest month is May during the southwest monsoon, while January and February are the driest.
How do you get to Galle?
From the international airport in Colombo, there are bus and train connections to Galle. By bus it takes three to four hours; by train, about two and a half hours.
You can also hire a private driver or take a taxi — naturally more comfortable, but also more expensive.
We visited Galle as a day trip from Hikkaduwa in a rented tuk tuk, which took us about 40 minutes.
Buses run regularly from there as well — your best bet is to ask at your accommodation for the exact schedules.
How long should you stay in Galle?
Two to three days in Galle is perfect for seeing the main highlights, including the museums.
If you also want to take day trips to the surrounding area — like Unawatuna — four days is the ideal amount of time.
That said, Galle is also totally worth a day trip if you just want to explore the old town highlights without fitting in museums or a cricket match.
Can you swim in Galle?
Galle does have beaches, but they’re quite rocky and not really suitable for swimming.
The most swim-friendly spot in Galle itself is Lighthouse Beach near the lighthouse in the Dutch Fort — though it’s very small and not well equipped.
For proper swimming, head to the nearby coastal towns of Unawatuna (6 km away) or Hikkaduwa (20 km away). Both are among the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka in our opinion.
